yo guys

instead of "i did good"/"i did well" lets just keep it straight

im in the 80th percentile, which one are youz in?

PS dont forget auckland doesnt care that much bout UMAT (thank god)

Hey, I am a student currently in extreme depression over the umat score I achieved. I intend to join Med at Auckland University. But my Umat score this morning shattered all the dreams I had. I have achieved a percentile of 66. I want open and sincere advice of whether or not this percentile is enough to get me into Auckland. To those that have been through similar situations b4, did anybody actually get into medicine with such a score.

It's not the end of the world. You have to do biomed at Auckland before you can try for medicine anyway, so you can sit UMAT again next year and improve on your score. The scoring system at Auckland for UMAT means that a 66 actually isn't even that much of a disadvantage.

Im sorta wondering, if you're in melbourne, im guessing they have more med schools than the only one here in auckland, wouldnt it be easier to try getting in over there?

As for your UMAT, I dont think you should worry about it. Not only is it merely worth 15% of your chance, its apparently less important than that. As long as you get a good GPA and do well in the interview you should be good, its hardly the end of anything, you're still in school mate

93%tile.

Vamsiaus, last year I got 69%tile. So you've got lots of time to improve if you do OLY1 next year.

Seems that you guys all did pretty well. Ok lets be straight, i got 91%tile so according to lordgarlic i just made it to a gpa of 9:lol:

Erm I think those scores refer to your overall raw...not to the percentiles. That's why the system doesn't value UMAT very much, because everyone gets raw scores within a certain narrow range, and noone is going to get something like 90 or 100 overall score.

It doesn't make sense for a university to use percentiles anyway. Small changes in the number of correct answers around the middle range of marks have huge changes on the percentile, whilst as the higher end they have less of an effect on percentiles, so it wouldn't be fair.

nah we didn't <_< its scaled raw scores not percentile...which is why even though we did pretty good...it doesn't really make much of a difference ^_^

Yeah I remember toaster being bummed out cause he got 64 as an overall raw score and just missed out on the next UMAT bracket lol.

im sorta wondering, does it really make a difference? i cant imagine howd they chose a canditate over the other coz of their umat score :?

Of course, with that said, a 90 percentile is definately better than a 80 percentile which is better than a 70 percentile, i just think everyone stresses about it heaps

Thanks for the advice guys. Just out of curiosity what is OLY1. Can I also ask what have u done to improve ur scores so drastically. Did u take sometype of tutoring or did u do practice. Any advice at the moment would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

OLY1 is the common biomed year for Auckland which you need to do to gain entry into med. Read up on lordgarlic's post on the first page for more info lol. I did the ******** course thing this year, and it did help me alot. (Woops! No advertising lol.)

Oh Ollie, I got 8.5. Not great lol.

EDIT: Ninja'd :P Heh we should get our own Auckland thread when more people turn up.
