Does anyone know whether we can get our exam marks back? They only tell you the grade but not the actual marks.

About going to med.. haha!

Hi there! I am reading the previous posts and I am now joining this discussion.. hehe.. I am also taking OLY1 as a Biomed student in Auckland uni this year.. I just have a question if I will still be able to go into med if the GPA of my 4 core courses is 8.25?? (I just assumed my medsci to be A as the worst case scenario thingy).. I am very depressed right now as I got A- in poplhlth 111!!!.. What are your comments about this?? haha.. But other than that no problem so far.. hehehe..

I am still optimistic though.. And will I be able to get into the interview if the GPA of the 8 courses I took is 8.375 to 8.5 and an average UMAT??

Please tell me what you think.. Thanks!

The only GPA that matters is the GPA of your 4 core courses, other than getting B+ average in the 8 courses. If you managed to get A+ in 107, then you probably should be able to get A+ in medsci. Medsci's content is harder, but the easy way its examined makes up for the difficult content. Getting a GPA of 8.5 would give you a reasonable chance I think of getting in, if you had a good interview, so stay optimistic! 8.25 would get you an interview, but it may be a bit low to get into med, without absolutely acing your interview.

Thanks!! haha!!! that really helped.. But Poplhlth really depressed me despite working very hard the entire semester<_<.. Is A+ in Medsci 85% and above also like the bio papers?? How about in UMAT?? What score in UMAT do I have to get?? I really suck at section 1.. I am doing ******** though.. hehehe..

Thanks heaps Toasta!!(yy)

this isn't high school anymore. Marks don't exist lol. All you get is grades and it's great :P

as far as I'm concerned, 85% and 100% is the same thing. Concentrate on your own grades and don't worry about other people :)

Hi quirino. I've heard of that rumour before but don't be too worried about it because it is just a mere rumour. 1st year biomed is very easy to get in, everyone i knew who wanted to do biomed got in. I don't know anyone who failed to get in...

I knew some people in my year with C average in their CIE results got into 1st year biomed. I doubt the requirements have changed much in these 2 years.

Looks like someone hasn't got 100% before

And in case you were thought I was serious, I wasn't :P Although I do think there is a big big difference in the work and perfection requires between an 85 and 100. I prefer marks because it just provides you with more information on how you went, and also an 85 and 100 are two very different indicators of how you went in my opinion.

I was wondering, is it possible to finish the first year of biomed in Auckland and then apply for the second year of medicine or dentistry at Otago?

Thanks :)

Nope, that's not possible. You'd have to finish your biomed degree then apply for graduate entry if you wanted to get into Otago that way.

Don't get too depressed, in my opinion poplhlth is the hardest paper, harder than medsci. Channel your anger at poplhlth or whatever, into medsci, and preparing as best you can for the interview.

Last year they said there was no set A+ boundary, and it could shift a bit either side of 85%. But generally people assumed it was 85% anyway, and it probably was.

Though they say UMAT is worth 15%, the way they assign grades (as explained by Lordgarlic near the start of this thread) to UMAT scores greatly decreases its influence, almost to nothing, as far as I am aware. I would say to keep up with the others who will be in contention for med, you would want an overall raw score in the ranges 55-59, or 60-64. Anything better would give you a bit of an advantage I guess. All the sections are weighted the same. My advice for section 1 is practise reading fast, so get used to doing it within the time limit, practise your speed reading on books, newspapers, uni required readings (this way you'll actually do them!).

hey everyone,

i've been lurking these forums for over 2 years now. i figured the mid-semester break in my final year would be a good time to say hi :)

currently in the third and final year of my BSc at auckland and am thinking of applying for med in auckland and otago through the graduate entry category.

hope u're all enjoying your holidays and maybe (hopefully) i'll see some of you first years in med next year :)

What do you mean by that? Is it the overall GPA?

Well for biosci papers A+ was specifically defined as 85%-100%. What I meant was that for medsci, we were told by the course coordinators there wasn't a specific definition of A+, but that it may shift around a little. I just looked at my courseguide from last year and it said that A+ has changed year by year, ranging between 82% and 86% over the last few years.

Is anyone here good at Physics? I did NCEA Lvl3 physics last year but have no idea about Thermal Physics (what we're currently doing). The lecturer was talking and i was like :cry:
Can anyone suggest some useful learning method for studying physics? Is the College Physics (Urone) book useful? Since the course guide is quite different from the lec slides, which one should i focus on the most?

Thanks a lot

You're already doing thermodynamics?! Thats a bit harsh, last year we did it later on in the semester. We started with the easier stuff like mechanics and electricity. I was pretty good at physics but even I found thermal a bit hard to understand at times. But luckily in the exams and tests, they normally assess mostly on calculation type problems, which are normally quite simple. So there's very little explaining involved. Which is why the best way to study is to do the problems out of Urone, and learn the equations well (ideally so you dont need to go searching your formula sheet for it). I would still try learn the theory, but don't worry too much if you don't understand it. Just remember it in case you need to regurgitate it in some answer. If its just thermodynamics you find hard, in the exam you get choices of long answer questions, so you could just skip the thermodynamics one if you wanted.

Thank you Toaster! Yeah in physics we are alternating between mechanics and thermal, like mechanics on Monday, thermal on Tuesday and mechanics again on Thursday and so on, which makes it really confusing at times. But i will take your advice and focus on problem solving.

By the way, we are doing The Brain and nervous system in Medsci, they only give us diagrams in the course guide with not much explanation, but in the reference readings there is loads of explanations and details on the topic (and loads &loads of new vocaB!!) What do you recommend that i should focus on? The diagrams or the notes? and to what extend do i need to learn from the Tortora textbook>?
Thanks a lot

For Prof. Faull's lectures, you should just learn the diagrams in the courseguide + what he made you copy down + whatever else he said in the lecture. Don't need to do any extra reading. His questions are normally quite simple. I didn't bother to do the reference readings, they're optional in my view.

General Education

Hi Everyone!!

I am currently taking PHIL 105G as General Education. Can anyone who heard about it, knew it, or took it tell me what do you reckon about this paper??? Please!! haha! I heard a lot of bad feed backs from people who took it but I am good at Logic and I do debate. The things I am hearing really make me somehow uncomfortable. Please tell me what to do about this or any advice about it. I need something or any idea from everyone.. hahaha! Cheers!:lol::lol:

I just dont want to regret things in the end as I plan to apply to med. I cant take ECON 151G because it's full. Thanks!!

Hi there,

I've had some friends who thought it was a ridiculously easy paper and also some who found it really difficult. I'm taking ECON151G as my final GE paper and I've heard different opinions about that too.

I was looking at my friend's PHIL105G material last semester and helping him with some of his assessments even though I didn't take the paper. It seems pretty OK in my opinion.

To be honest I don't think any of the GE papers should be overly difficult, and you won't do too badly if you put in the effort. I'd say just keep up your GPA for your 4 core papers and focus more on those.

I've also heard that the Disability GE paper is pretty interesting from some mates if you want to consider that as well.

:)
