lol, it make life sooo much easier if they consider the GPA of the 4 core subjects rather than the total GPA THEN the GPA across the 4 core subjects. Some are speculating that this is in fact what they do but we cant risk it. Either way i hope they clear it up this thursday

Its not speculation at all. All you have to achieve is B+ average overall across your 8 papers. Once that has been achieved, only the 4 core papers matter . It is the 4 core papers that are taken into account for selecting people for interview, and it is the 4 core papers that count for your final score as well.

This is what the Faculty website says:

"Following the successful completion of the eight prescribed first year courses, applicants achieving a minimum GPA of 6.0 (B+ average) are eligible for consideration for an admissions interview.
All eligible applicants will then be ranked on their grades achieved in the four common courses (highlighted below in bold) that are offered in both the BHSc and the BSc (Biomedical Science) programmes.
Twice as many eligible candidates as there are places available in the mecial programme will be interviewed."

And yes the vision lecturer is awesome, probably one of the most talented people at the med school. I have heard that she was once offered a lecturing job at Johns Hopkins medical school.

how did u do in ur medsci test Leafie? I screwed up the reproduction lab most, unfortunately i dont speak latin so whichever retard expected us to know what the name of a virus/fungus/bacteria was based on his/her description of it thought it would be cool to ask us that should be b*t*hslapped

Best thing i liked about medsci was all that all our lectureres were about >70 year olds, it sorta made me hate a specific somebody who desided to make his powerpoints 50 slides each, and just for gags he drowned each of them with information (lets not forget good old mr. thermal physics)

[offtopic]anyone think Dr. S is sorta.... charming?[/offtopic]
Don't even mention it. I screwed up my labs bad:cry:. I thought the questions asked were weird, they pick on the tiniest details!! I still can't find the answer for the brain-swelling question.
[offtopic]she's ok i guess. i like the electricity guy more tho lol. [/offtopic]

I tend to always sleep late in the weekends, so by the time its sunday night im tierd at around 2.30am, sux but nothing 350mls of V cant fix. Just got back from my 4th physics lab, glad to say im FINALLY done with it, never liked it from the start, had an awesome partner tho [offtopic]if it wasnt for this really cute girl at my lab i probably would have found it much worse[/offtopic]

cut off gpa

just wondering what the cut off gpa to get an interview for auckland 2009 will be?

also, for the four core papers, what type of grades should you been aiming to get? i mean obviously four A+'s would be awesome but is it there a cutoff? as in if you get an A- in one of the four, does that ruin your chances or what?

my gpa was really bad as well when I applied through the OLY1 pathway, 2007 I think?
my gpa for the 4 courses was 7.25 (b+ in poplhlth) and total gpa was like 6.7 for year 1 but I still got an interview

I had no desire to study medicine then though and just applied because everyone else did , went to less than half the lectures and since the exam schedule was all cramped (3 days in a row :() I studied for the final exams a day before, never a good idea
I'm sure in the interview they probably saw right through me:)
Once I realised I wanted to do med I sort of regret not trying harder in that first year

anyway sometimes one tries to play the good cop and the other is the bad cop but once you talk to them they're actually quite nice, like they're not going to bite you or anything

i don't think so
you just wake up near Christmas one morning and you find out if you got accepted or rejected on nDeva
and you get a nice consolation letter afterwards

leafie are you talking about which ventricle of the brain swells up (im guessing its the same question as last year) from something i can't remember. But i remember that the answer is lateral ventricles (thats only thing i remember cus talked for ages about it with my friend).

1st years, be warned that MEDSCI lab questions are hard especially the one for final exam. I remember a lot of them were like wtf especially loiselle ones i think... Some of them do take more time to figure out. Also that women teaching you stuff about the eye, make sure to pay attention during lecture because she doesn't put it on cecil. She will talk really fast and tries to tank through her 100 slides. Most of the notes are in coursebook from what I remember but some aren't.

Regarding BIOSCI106, I'm not sure where you got 78% from but I thought its always been 85%. However, I have a few friends who told me that they failed the exam but still got an A because they did really well in lab and first test. BIOSCI106 isn't too bad, just do the past papers and you'll see that they just use the same MCQ questions. Regarding Ken scott, he can ask questions which is just about pure memorising of all his diagrams (yes they can be any random one). Most of us didn't expect the first SAQ question to be so specific(check out the 2008 paper). I learnt it like 5 mins before going into the test so I actually got it =P
Ken scott: "know how to draw the structures, but there will be clues"

University of Auckland Med interview dates:
Monday December 7 2009 - Monday 14 December 2009 (obviously don't include weekends)
You'll be allocated a time slot between 8:30 am and 5:15 pm on those days.
Each interview will last 20 mins? (I think they no longer do 40 min ones but correct me if I'm wrong)
You will be given a notification 3-4 days before your interview. MAKE SURE TO CHECK YOUR EMAILS, BECAUSE INVITATIONS BY LETTER MAY BE LATE.

Good luck 1st years and other candidates

thanks for the reply giga. Just came back from the med selection orientation. Thankfully im not worried bout the interview anymore, first time in biomed that i've been at peace with the whole thing. Its just now i HATEEE michelle, that asian MBChB co-ordinator, god dam what sort of an idiot is she speaking with her 2 decibel voice in FPAA without using the mic which is 20cm away from her.

Anyway, Good luck studying physics guys

Hey guys,

I think this is my first post here! I was on this site around last yr this time reading all the comments and it kind of went away. Currently bored and came upon it again and it's been interesting to read what the new 1st yrs have been saying, because I totally understand what you guys are going through...

Good luck with the "final lap" of trying to get into med.
silentghostx

lol - I might see some of you at the interview (although we won't know each other) coz I'll be helping out there!

Yeah, that's what i put as well, but many of my friends sai it was the 3rd ventricle, which sort of made sense when i looked at the diagram. Oh well, at least we don't need to do the first 3 labs in the exam.

Wow, last nights med admissions lecture. 196 overall seats, up to 45 mapas, 30 rompe, + 1/3 grad leaves undergrads with only about 76 seats  Getting in is gonna be a b*tch
