Pretty good imo, the electric fish surprised me though. Hope i get some marks for that question >< haha, these marks will prob come out before my philosophy ones, a test i sat 2 and a half weeks ago

luckily i strongly anticipated the electric fish one. He talked about it in 2 lectures so i figured if there was gonna be any qualitative questions, it should be that one. Either way, i think the class average will be higher this time around, i put it at 60

Any idea on MAPAS or ROMPE?

tbh I'm just wondering, I would assume there would be less MAPAS (maybe ROMPE too?) students at Otago and thus less places..

There aren't specific spots set aside for rural/maori entry. On your application you can put yourself down as rural/maori and I'm not sure how it works but I think it just means your marks get put up? There was only a small fraction who were maori/rural in our class...like 17 put themselves down as rural or maori if I remember correctly but I'm really hazy on it. I know it's definitely nothing like auckland where you have so many spots set aside like that.

I still think they use grades not marks:

"Selection into Medicine is determined by a combination of an applicant’s grade point average (GPA) in HSFY (two-thirds weighting) and weighted UMAT result (one-third weighting)"

If they go through the trouble of making it so clear that it's the grade point average, I'd think they'd actually use it, and I doubt they don't know what grade point average means.

They use marks

I emailed them and they have confirmed that at Otago they use marks, not grades. As I say, "GPA" can be interpreted in differing ways, and for health sciences professional programmes admission, they consider it as simply the raw average of paper marks.

So all that work last year wasn't for nothing :D I still find it weird that GPA is used in such a loose fashion when "grade-point average" is kinda explicit if you take it literally.

Hi Skyglow! I was reading one of the otago threads and something interesting came up. something like you need to get at least 25th percentile in each section in order to be eligible to apply for med. Is it true? If so, why did so many people stress out coz of UMAT? Or was it that i understood it wrong and it was actually the top 25th percentile (75th percentile), or was it the raw score of 25 for each section?

By the way does anyone know what was the lowest GPA that got students into Auckland med last year? In the med-talk i heard something about auto-in. Did anyone actually got in thru that or was it just something that's trying to lift hopes coz someone i know got a GPA of like an A- for 3 core papers (I don't know what he got for the medsci test) but wouldn't shut up talking about that he's DEFINITELY going into the interview and DEFINITELY going to get an auto-in. It can be a real pain hearing it knowing that i'm asian and i can't get that auto-in.
If auto-in is true, does it mean that it will take more spots off the general entry or is there an auto-in for postgrads as well?

Come to read it again and realised how weird it sounded lol. But you must understand that almost everyone i know had been talking about it so i thought it would be good to clear a few things up from someone who actually KNOW about it. May all the med-hopeful minds rest in peace. Amen

Everyone liked Collin. In the morning lecture ppl clapped for him for like a whole minute. Really wishing him a good relaxed time off teaching.

I'm pretty sure they don't have a set number of "auto-in's". It basically happens when they talk to you and are like "this guy/girl is a MUST! They are perfect for being a doctor!", so they give you a 10. Asians can get a 10 just as much as any other race - it's not based on race at all - you get a 10 if you appear to be the perfect candidate, it's as simple as that. They may have 25 people who get it, they may have 1. Don't worry about it - you may be the 1 who they think is perfect ^_^

That's for graduate entry, where UMAT matters much less. In my year and previous years, you just had to get above 25 percentile in each side, and after that your UMAT did not matter (it was all done on your GPA you got in your degree). This year they are changing it and saying that you need to get above a pecentile that is determined by them, but they're not giving away what the cutoff is.

For entry through healthsci, there are no cutoffs for UMAT. People stress out about it because if you bomb out in UMAT, it has a good chance of killing your chances of med because it's worth 1/3 of your mark.

The interview is around 30 min. It sounds rather long but once you are there it goes really quickly... like I thought I had only been in for a short while and the guy was already saying "ahh so do you have any questions for us?"

Do know your MH03 really well, and be prepared to elaborate on somethings you wrote (e.g. regarding your extracurricular activities).

Some people gets curly questions but I thought my interviewers were really nice. Just seems to be a good conversation. Know some current health issues, and remember it's ok to say you don't know or not to sure about certain aspects if you get asked it. Also, they could say things that are wrong (e.g morally), and expect you to go against them just to see if you would...

Good luck!

nz med graduates

yooo

can anyone tell me what kind of gpa/umat u need for a graduate to be actually competitive for auck/otago med? having real uncertainties about applying at the end of my biomed degree this year or next year with honours..

For Otago, GPA below 7 (by Otago's standard) has absolutely no chance. I reckon that if your GPA is below 7.5 , you probably need a miracle to get in. I am not sure about auckland because they consider your interview performance as well.
