the only maths we used was for the physics paper. It included 4 topics of equal importance in mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity (without magnetism) and optics. There are also a few lectures on medical imaging. All of them used simple algebric equations, no calculus or stats, just replacing numbers in equations

For all you Auckland ex-biomeders, did you take any bit of plant biology in your first year?

In certain areas yes but nothing to do with their physical features. Biosci 106 has Genetic engineering involving plants remembering chemicals, chemical formulas, genes that kind of stuff. 101 has plant cell structure briefly and the carbohydrate metabolism in 106 and 101 overlap into Calvin cycle in plants. Certain labs involve using plants and photosynthesis. Nothing on plant structures though if that's what you are worried about. Might be other stuff that I don't remeber but definately nothing major in any of the papers on plants.

dogtown - the BHSc papers (that aren't core for everyone) are social science papers, which means if you are good at assimilating lots of reading & summing up the ideas there as well as adding your own you'll do really well. There's no right or wrong, however 1st year is pretty prescriptive - meaning the lecturers are pretty specific about what they want to see. The subject matter is really interesting and it's a great degree to be in if you miss out on med after the first year - it's also great info to know if you plan on going into clinical practice.

thanks for the information :)

Professor Peter Black passed away... :(
He was a pretty good lecturer too, so sad

To all you MBChB 2nd year students out there...
Did you receive any sort of confirmation regarding anything, i.e. Reply slip camp and AUMSA?

I emailed the person when sent all our stuff via email to confirm that they received my reply slip. That's all though, I just check my Ndeva, Cecil and EC mail regularly. Sad about the professor that died recently, I didn't know him but I'm sure he was a great man.

Yeah its so tragic. He was a great lecturer, so knowledgeable, he had everything in his memory, and didn't have any need to read notes or slides. 2nd years miss out on quite a bit now with Colin retired, peter black gone and no chance to experience the terror of phil blythe.

Any Ideas who will be our lectures this year? I know how great Colin was from experience and from what you say Peter was good. I hope we get good lecturers!

I am just completing my enrollment into papers for OLY biomed. I just have a few questions if you could please help me with...

1. I have enrolled in my courses such that for both semesters my first lecture will begin at 8am (mon, tue, thur, fri). I do not live near the university and will have to commute for around 1 hour either way. I have also made all my lab sessions in the afternoon. Is this ok? Were any of you guys in a similar situation i.e. having morning lectures? Any advice?

2. Does the Physics 160 paper have a tutorial component that I have to enroll into? It says something about a tutorial on the handbook, but nothing on ndeva.

3. When you did OLY biomed, did you guys have to take 3 of the 4 core papers in the first semester? This year, Chem110, BioSci107 and PopHlth111 are all in the first semester. Any advice?

4. I am planning on doing Econ151g as my general ed paper. On ndeva, it says and lab/tutorial component will be revealed at the first lecture. Can anyone that took economics elaborate??

5. Where do we find out where these lectures are held?

Thanks in advance guys :)

Hi there,

It has been a little while since I did OLY1 but I hope this helps.

1. If you can get up in the mornings and arrive on time I think morning lectures are great. It leaves the afternoons (when you don't have labs/tuts) free for study and/or part-time work.

2. When I did PHYSICS160 there was a lab component AND also tutorials.

3. Correct, CHEM110, BIOSCI107 and POPLHLTH111 were all in the first semester. Work hard and keep up the GPA for your core papers! Otherwise even an A+ in MEDSCI142 later on might not be able to save you.

4. I did ECON151G in Semester 2 last year. There weren't any related classes - just 1 hour lectures on Mon and Wed.

5. I'm pretty sure it tells you on your class schedule on nDeva? Unless they haven't confirmed the lecture halls yet.

Hope that helps!

Thanks so much ^_^ Now Im glad I chose morning lectures. Just one quesiton though: I have checked twice for an enrollable tutorial for Physics - which I will be taking in semester 2 - but there is nothing there...But clearly on the handbook it says something like 5 percent tutorial or something...

Hi Ash92, there is a physics tutorial, but you will be enrolled in it once you start your labs, so don't worry about it. What happens is, you have already enrolled in a lab stream and basically, you will alternate between a lab in one week, and a tutorial the next week (in your lab time slot).

Hey guys, which general ed papers would you suggest for a biomed student? I heard philosophy's quite easy.

It depends on what you are interested in, the mark doesn't really count as long as you pass and get a GPA of 6.0 in your 8 papers. I chose MUSIC144G which was alright, it's basically a brief history of Western music from medieval times to present.

I heard it philosophy was really easy if english is your first language, otherwise everyone i know (foreigners) found it hard. Eco151 is by far the easiest one, most of my friends who took it never attended the lectures and ended up getting A's with only a few days worth of cramming. I can advise you to NOT do scigen101, it required more work on your part than i was hoping for, and its really hard to get anything better than an A- (I ended up getting a B for it). Also, you should keep in mind that all language papers are 4 lectures per week and apparently more annoying than enjoyable

Either way, you should go with something you enjoy; since the general education paper is not a core subject, you can afford to screw up in it (like i did) and not worry about the consequences

Hope that helps, i remember a horrible time trying to decide on which one to take, frankly i still hate having been forced to take it. Good luck
