I'm having difficulty in deciding what general education paper I should take for the second semester.

Does anyone know whether or not the Law paper is easier than the philosophy paper?

Thank you:lol:

Generally I feel that unless you have good skills in essay writing doing some of the many essay based arts papers means it is hard to get a great grade without lots of work on organization and technique of essay writing which is a lot of trouble. If you are thinking purely of getting high grades for the interview then ECON is probably undoubtedly the best choice. Many other choices seem a lot more interesting to me. I did global history and found it different and interesting not too hard of a task, but did get my lowest grade in it.

Pretty much what Yang said. ECON151G would probably be your safest bet if you want to make sure your transcript looks nice and pretty. I also did INTBUS151G which I enjoyed and got a good grade in. However, if you're not really into essay-writing then stay away from INTBUS.

Otherwise, choose a paper that you're interested in if you don't mind (potentially) getting a lower grade.

Thanks for the advice you guys

But I decided to go with philosophy105 because it fitted in well with my timetable...hope it's not too hard, but I'm ok with essay writing so bring it on Auckland!(yy)

I did phil 105 and its not about waffle writing skills, more about logical deduction and ability to be concise. And you never ahve to go to lectures and tuts :D and no exam of course :) the assignment is pretty straightforward. Second test much harder than first though

Hey guys

Its great to find this forum. Just wondering, I have made my timetable such that I have two labs -chem110 and pophlth111- on a Monday, one running on even weeks and one running on odd weeks. Also I have two labs on a Thursday - BioSci107 and BioSci101 - running on odd and even weeks respectively.

Is this ok? Will this be an issue i.e does lab-related work ever run over two weeks?

Also, I am overseas atm and will be back in NZ in Feb so was wondering, after enrolling, is that all I need to do atm? can I do the rest after returning i.e. buying books etc? Info on what we need to get sorted and buy will be provided by post, right?

Thanks heaps^_^

Hiya Caerus,

Yep, it's all right to have your labs running on alternate weeks. I did that for BIOSCI101 and BIOSCI107, and it was fine. Just don't get confused about which lab you have on which week. :P

Yeah, don't worry too much about buying your textbooks while you're overseas, it can most likely wait 'til you get back.

And you may know that you have to do this already, but you should probably make sure you have your student loan and/or student allowance sorted before uni starts too, if you're getting either of those. ^^

And yeah, I think I remember getting letters in the mail about what we need for each course and where to get them. Lecture guides, lab coats, safety glasses, etc.

Hope that was reassuring. ^^

I'm doing 1st Year Health Sciences at Auckland this year. I'm 25, so it's been a while since I've studied highschool sciences. Do they start you from scratch in the first-year papers, or should I be doing some quick revision before lectures start?

I'm mostly thinking of Chem 110 here, as I can't remember much chemistry at all.

You don't need to review your material too much, but it would help. They assume you have a high school level of the sciences already but I found that having little background is overcome able if you study hard. But review basic organic chemistry and biology would help

It'd definately make things alot easier if you're familiar with the material, but I have a friend who didnt study biology in high-school and managed to ace all of the biology papers, so it really depends on the effort you put into it

Good luck

Ahm, did anyone get any letter from FMHS after that package we got when they gave out offers? Wasnt there supposed to be a something detailing how we enroll and stuff?

On that information package we got back in december (with the AUMSA, NZMSA, Freshers and immunisation forms), the main letter says in the second paragraph "You will soon be receiving a formal offer letter from the University of Auckland which includes general guidance on accepting your offer and enrolment", but I didnt get anything after that, did anyone?

Nah, I haven't gotten anything. I was wondering about that too, dunno what they meant ...

A friend of mine said that a friend of his said that a friend of hers said that we'll get some more stuff soon.

In other the news, the Mercedes SLS is awesome.

Hey guys,

Just wondering where I should buy the textbooks applicable to Semester 1 courses (CHEM 101, POP HLTH 111, BIO SCI 101 and BIO SCI 107).

Also..are any of u guys selling ur txt books from last yr...if u r..please let me know

Thnx..

hahaha amazing. who are you in real life?
A wannabe who only drinks Bacardi because Michael Schumacher is the spokesperson.

Indiana_91, you can buy them at the UBS bookstore new, but they also have stocks of used textbooks. You'll probably be able to buy them on the O-day. There's also another bookstore near Subway on Symonds Street, but I don't recall ever seeing any appropriate textbooks there.
