I think they mean that students don't know each other as well since there are so many and the because of this the traditionally private culture of the programme. It is a bit elitiest

I was looking at some job ads on the internet and found something unusual (I've crossed the name out)

Doctor for printing out prescriptions wanted

A doctor that will only print out prescriptions for a NZ citizen (happy to register at the doctor's practice) wanted. 30 secs of work, $15 earned. No other enquires, complaints, consultations. Call/text BBBB: 021-1111111 or Skype: aaaa_aaaa

Are doctors allowed to do this or is this person just looking for a way to get his/her drugs?

Last year, a person from PHARMAC came to a lecture and said that people go "doctor shopping" for controlled drugs (visit and pressure every doctor they can find until one of them gives in and writes a prescription).

Really? was this in healthsci or something?

The advertiser sounds like a drug seeker, and yea from what i picked up on TV dramas they pretty much screw around till they get their fix, legally. Frankly bribing a doc with $15 sounds a bit lame, even if it's for 30 seconds of work

been almost 2 weeks since FMHS last emailed us... sorta sad ay, I almost got used to their daily emails; albiet most of them were useless

wow, didn't think it would be so openly advertised.

Would the legality depend on the nature of the prescription ? I.e. contraceptives = ok, controlled drugs = not ok? Or would responding to an advertisement of this nature be a crime in itself?

Must say, it seems rather shady. Especially with "No other enquires, complaints, consultations."

Also, would anyone happen to know how the schedules for 2nd year work? Im guessing everyone is seeing "1.00AM - 1:00AM" or "TBA" on their nDeva timetables? Will these change as the semester draws closer ?

Furthermore, rumour has it that the schedules changes on a weekly basis? Can anyone confirm / deny ? Thanks in advance.

I believe the schedules won't be given till orientation day. Don't know about the weekly schedules. Seems a pain if true though.

I can confirm that there are different timetables every week. It was a bit of a pain trying to organise lunch with med friends in 2nd year since they didn't have fixed timetables!

On another note, are most of you going to freshers'? Can't wait to meet the starting class of 2010 =)

Med timetable changes on a daily basis. You generally find that the hours are the same say for Monday of each week but you may have different papers slotted for the same time on different weeks. It also varies depending on which group you get assigned to for lab/discussions e.g for mbchb211 pccs.

A draft timetable will likely to be out a week before classes start but you'll be given the finalised one on the first day as well as your group allocations so I wouldn't worry too much about printing it...

Thanks for the information guys. Sounds like its gonna be an interesting year. Hopefully we'll be able to show up for the right lectures on the right days. Im guessing that draft timetable covers the entire year / semester?

Meanwhile, @lambchops: i hear that freshers is pretty full, and attendance pretty high. Looking forward to meeting some fellow mso'ers too. Only 1 week till freshers, and another till the start of semester...how are we all feeling ?

freshers should be a good experience. Be expected to be thrown in the deep end with the games and stuff but it's all in good spirit and fun. Unfortunately i have too much to do and won't be there. But then again, very few 4th-6th years come since we've had our moment in the spotlight already

Have no fear, g.walker, they have emailed us once more, and it's informative too. Useful information on the induction programme and a little note regarding timetables, and it's right after I asked about it on MSO... such timing..

@lordgarlic, ahh. tis a shame, I assume that I'm not the only one grateful for all the more-than-useful information you've provided regarding med entry. On a side note, somehow it feels like we freshers will be in for a ....surprise...

Are there any experienced med students who know which books are really useful to get? after first year I'm cynical of buying a book I will never actually use in my course (Chem110 and poplhlth111)

I was hoping people wouldn't use their initiative
Bloody med students ^_^

ooer I don't like blood tests
last time I had one, they missed my vein about 3 times so had to use my other arm :(
Nice lady though, very kind :)

Hey guys

Just wondering, what would you advise me do at the orientation week coming up??

Also, is it worthwhile to sign up for any of the library/computer related courses they offer, plus courses offered by the SLC?? I heard that these courses will be running during o week where you dont have to sign up before hand. is this true?

Thankks so much ^_^ Looking forward to start uni (yy)

-Dont be overwhelmed by the number of biomeds you talk to trying to get into med, a good number of them arn't really serious
-Avoid the tanned man in sunglasses trying to promote ASB
-Avoid the vegetarian sausage at the BBQ

and if you miss the first orientation for biomeds, and are stuck with the last few late birds, get to know them, helps kill the next 4 hour wait

other than that, just chill mate. Personally i didnt go for any of the 'courses' they offered at the library/SLC, didnt really use either anyway

oh, and one last thing
-follow the white rabbit

hey thanks for that g.walker. Also wondering when/where we find out where our lectures labs and tuts are being held? Also, on the ubs website, it just shows the books required for semester one right? Are there further books required apart from the ones listed on the ubs website?

Thanks heaps

Hey there Caerus,

for lectures, the room codes are usually shown on your nDeva schedule page. Im guessing something like 290-098 or F&PAA etc. you can either look on a uni map, or you'll probably be shown these places by the uni guides. (or they might tell you at the biomed orientation, but i missed that so cant say )

As for the labs/tutorials, these are usually sorted out during the first lecture. ( hence, probably a good idea not to miss it )

As for the textbooks, I believe that they will be posted up before semester 2, when they add in the new course codes and textbooks. Considering you'll be doing OLY1 , the only new book will be physics (which was pretty useless in my opinion, as was the chem one)

For orientation, I'd say, get to know some new people, join a few clubs, and have some fun before everything gets serious.

Personally ,I didnt both with the library/computer courses, but if at some point during the semester, i think you can join one then as well.

As for:
-Avoid the tanned man in sunglasses trying to promote ASB
I'd say, avoid all of them, unless you want a new account / kiwisaver / some other thing.

Best of luck for your first year!
