YES! I got 11 out of 50 apparently...had an epic meltdown...went for a run to clear my head then came back and read the email that they had messed up mcq marking...phew! Didnt do well at all in saqs anyway though so overall a crap result! Oh well will just have to own the next one =)

Hello, I was just wondering if any experienced/"in the know" person could tell me what a good GPA for getting into med is, what a "omg you have no chance of getting in" GPA is and finally what the lowest GPA you could get into med with in terms of both core and non-core papers are. =D

OMG no chance GPA: <6.0 for all subjects.

Lowest GPA: 6.0 for both core and all. If you are utterly badass and sociable and totally convince the interviewers of your sincerity and ability so that you get >9000/10 for your interview score (in the old system you will get automatic entry, but don't know if they've changed).

Good Core GPA: 8.25-9.0 for regular candidates. 8.5 to 8.75 seems to be the median.

Good overall GPA: Just don't fail anything and keep it above 6.0. Or 7.0.

a GPA of 6.0 won't get you even an interview. Last year the minimum GPA for interviews was 7.25-7.5 and I know this for a fact since I know the admissions lady fairly well

I'll just add my two cents - unless you apply under MAPAS or ROMPE a GPA of 6.0 will definitely not get you in (unless this year performs worse for some reason). I had a GPA of 7.25 in 2008 and I didn't get an interview.

just a quick question. How are you ranked to get the interview spots at the end of the year? Is it your overall GPA that they rank you on or just the core 4 papers. I have heard people saying how your overall gpa is used for interview but then your 4 core papers are used in the next selection process. Please tell me they are wrong. :s. didn't study at all for the 101 tests and edging only A-. So I am kinda worried if I should start improving my grade.

From what I picked up, you need an overall GPA of 6.0, and after that interview allocations are given according to the core GPA starting from highest till they reach the limit

So it looks like an absolute minimum of 7.5 overall GPA and a 8.25 minimum core GPA. Cool, thank you very much =D

It is only your core GPA that matters once you have a GPA of 6.0 in all of your subjects.

"Following the successful completion of the eight prescribed first year courses, applicants achieving a minimum GPA of 6.0 (B+ average) are eligible for consideration for an admissions interview.

All eligible applicants will then be ranked on their grades achieved in the four common courses (highlighted below in bold) that are offered in both the BHSc and the BSc (Biomedical Science) programmes."

That is, when you get a GPA of 6.0 in all your papers they say "ok he/she is can be ranked for an interview" - THEN they rank you based on your core GPA. Therefore, you only need a GPA of 6.0 in all of your papers to be ranked. However you probably need 8.25 in your core minimum.

i.e. Jimmy gets 6.0 overall GPA and 9.0 GPA for core - he will be guaranteed to get an interview because he is eligible for ranking (because of his 6.0), and then when he is ranked he has the highest possible GPA (9.0).

The confusing thing is, is that most people in med (if not all) have an overall GPA of greater than 7.0 - that doesn't mean they had to have a GPA of 7.0, it just means they worked hard in all their papers.

Just thought I might join in :). Don't they say that they interview approximately twice as many people as they accept... therefore app 300ish people. But wouldnt the numbers of OLY students getting an overal GPA of 6 or above (and thus qualify for an interview) be like way higher than this?

If you get a GPA of 6.0 you do not qualify for an interview - you qualify to be RANKED for an interview. If you qualify to be ranked, then they rank you with your core papers.

Here is a diagram.

OLY1 (1200) ----> Students with GPA 6.0 OVERALL (500) ----> These 600 students are then ranked for an interview based on their CORE PAPERS ----> Students with GPA >7.5 CORE (300) ----> Interview ----> Yay Med student!!! (150)

The numbers are just approximate but that is the flow.

Sweet, thanks. Does that mean after you get an interview, your grades in the core paper no longer matter? Or do they still count them towards your FINAL GPA i.e. 60% of it?

Thanks heaps :)

Your core GPA is the only mark they use to make up 60% of your final GPA. Your overall GPA is forgotten once you are eligible to be ranked. So basically, if it comes down to studying for 107 or 101 - study for 107  Good luck!

if only it was that easy haha.

they interview graduates for the graduate quota of about 40 now i think. Supposedly that is what is happening now.

Also include 20 ROMPE students and about 30 MAPAS students :p

so from the potential pool of 200 odd places, you have 200 - 40 (grad) - 20 - 30 = 110 places :P for OLY1

Tru, but the number of places doesnt make much of a difference after you get offered an interview since your chances will remain 50/50 regardless, although u could argue that with larger cohorts there will be more candidates with lower GPA's thus better chances for people who aced everything, probably negligible though...

Either way, Id advise you guys to worry about your core papers for now, getting an interview really isnt the hard part at all

again incorrect. I know for a fact that in the current year 2 class, there were significantly more than double the number of people interviewed as places. This was because if they left the cut off at 2x, then the GPA needed to get in was ridiculous, hence they increased interview spots

Wow! one hell of a chem test. I could barely finish it. It sucks how they give us only an hour to do it. pophlth will be out wednesday, kinda excited kinda scared. How did you guys find the test?
