Oh and regarding UMAT... how much influence does this have?
I know it's only 15% but when they're ranking students for entry into MBCHB II, do they still consider UMAT as part of it?

or do they sort of look at the UMAT when they're ranking students for interviews and then leave it at that?

and what's a reasonable UMAT score?
I sat it last year and I got 60 for both section 2 and 3 but 43 on section 1 lol
So i really need to improve section 1 this year....
my overall score was around like 55 which put me in 75th percentile??
Say i got the same score this year but with a 8.75 GPA, would that be ok? or fairly disadvantageous?

Thank you!

Okay so the deal with the ranking process is quite confusing and you will hear lots of different things about it. How it works though is you have to meet a certain criteria to be considered at all, that criteria is a B+ --> A- over all 8 of your papers. once you pass that criteria you move onto the next one. this is where it gets important, they then rank you on JUST your 4 core papers and select 2x as many people as places to interview. So the B+ criteria is just to ensure that you don't slack off in other papers, what you get ranked for the interview with is core papers alone, so my advice is to really focus on medsci this semester obviously still do well in the other papers but as long as your average overall is at an A- to be on the safe side don't stress about A+. The cut off for interview last year seemed to be in the high 7.8 maybe? i think was around the lowest i heard of getting an interview (there could be lower though, and thats for general entry not schemes) and that GPA is core only by the way.

After an interview then the 60%, 15%, 25% rule comes into play. Basically they separate all interviewees into 3 criteria. exceptional (very few people mayb 10ish (very approximate) each year who get guaranteed admission regardless of marks umat etc, then those who are acceptable and those who are unacceptable (again very few people). everybody who fits the acceptable criteria is then ranked 60% on marks, 15% umat 25% interview. They then offer places to those based on this ranked list.

UMAT is a bit complicated, and they never truly discolse how they rank it ie whether they look at percentiles or raw score. But it seems that they group people into quite large clusters, ie discrete rather than continuous. I really would advise not to stress about UMAT unless your marks are weak. My GPA was 8.75, and i had a good interview but my UMAT was crap in the 67% or soemthing like that, (i just bombed on the day), had a big cry in the car thought my med career was over. don't worry its not lol. They really don't emphasise UMAT that much. Having said that do as well as you can because it still contributes! and everything ads up. Most important once you get your marks is the interview, just be yourself, don't try to be somebody different. All they really want to see is that you're friendly, can communicate well (that means listening and responding not just talking), that you have other interests in your life and most importantly that you have some sort of idea what a career in med really encompasses (which is actually quite hard to do.. and you quite possibly will get grilled on the realities of medicine and med school in an interview), and in my mind one of the most important things is to see that your enthusiastic and really passionate about med, and if you are, that will shine through and you will do fine!

In terms of community service again people stress too much about this. I talked to one of the interviewers about this (a family friend), and he talked about how pained he was about the token 2 months before sudden interest in community service etc. Yes it is desirable, but only if its a genuine interest and not token. You don't need community service to get into med, rather an understanding of the dynamics of the community, a willingness to be involved with people from lotos of different backgrounds etc

All the best guys, hope to see some of you at freshers camp next year

Is OASIS actually that hard/time consuming?
Graham Forster said that we'd need to spend like 8 hours doing the practise oasis but it doesn't actually even seem that much (about 40 questions?)

i heard the incourse tests for physics were hard though.. what would you guys suggest?

and how did everyone go in umat?
I know i'm definitely not going to be boasting about my mark when it comes out -_-

p.s. does anyone know how to actually get hospital experience? the whole arranging--through-human-resources seems more complicated than inception (which is a brilliant movie by the way, if you haven't seen it yet you have to it's so worth your money)

hope everyone's having a good weekend!

Thanks ihateumat!
That cleared alot of things up (yy)

cut off for interviews last year was kept at 7.5 but the problem was that the faculty had to interview more than the usual number of candidates because of the number over the 7.5 GPA.

What you must remember is that a proportion (I think 1/3) are set aside for graduates and they most likely have their own selection cohort. So factoring out ROMPE, MAPAS and grads there really arne't that many places left for the standard remuera based OLY1 student.

Essentially just do your best. Oasis is pretty easy though. I did no physics before university and still got A+ in 160

Hello!
To everyone and anyone
Why did you want to be a doctor?
i've been drafting my mh03 and was just curious as to what motivated other people ^_^

have a good weekend everyone and study hard!

I started medicine becauase I wanted to have no social life, be a hermit and have overwhelming power over other human beings, duh

just wondering, is O&G really that bad?
I've talked to a few people who had an interest in O&G but after they did their runs, most of them changed their mind:blink:

I think it is. It's the first time I've ever felt nauseous in an operating theatre as well. There is just something inherently ugly about O&G. Obstetric Medicine is quite interesting though I find.

The foetus is like a 4-legged parasite that causes your immune system to go haywire for 9 months. It's interesting from a medical point of view

hahahaha now that's an insight you don't often get

That was totally epic! May have been a wise move to let simon in on it though. Anything go down in avo stream?

It's getting to that time of the year again when things are starting to get busy for everyone!

Best of luck for your first years with UMAT and everything out of the way. If anyone wants some interview practice, just send me a msg and I can spend about 30 minutes doing it with you provided I can find time in my schedule. Can also help with 142 if people are desperate. Not gonna charge for this stuff because I like teaching and I can't commit to anything on a weekly basis

Thanks for the offer LordGarlic! May have to take up that offer later on :). Just had my sheep heart lab today morning, and the test was quite hard :(. Are the forthcoming labs harder? Or was that the hardest lab? I dont feel good about that lab...ohh well

wow, thank you so much for the offer. As shiv said, I too will probably use it closer to the interviews. ^_^
