CSU CSU Dentistry: Q&A and General Discussion

Hi guys long time lurker first time poster. I am currently doing an honours year in Science . As applications are submitted before I complete my honours year how exactly will they determine my eligibility for an interview? I am fairly confident I will receive first class honours at the end of this year but without it my GPA will not be all that competitive.
Hi UAV, welcome to MSO!

What's your GPA without your honours? I know that final offers will be done based on your final GPA, inc. Honours, but for the interview I'm not so sure. I'd recommend calling up the university to ask about it. Hutcherson may be able to answer.

Good luck and maybe I'll see you next year! :)

just over 5, in my final year I had a GPA of 6.

CSU should have your final GPA by early-mid December before offers are made :)
Cool thanks for that, less worried now. One last question does CSU look at only your honours year mark or average the 3 years bachelor + honours year? For example UQ only looks at your honours year

They will use your GPA from your science as the competitive mark I am quite sure.

Thanks ^_^

Best to ring admissions and ask :)

You guys are going to get so sick of me (if you aren't already:p).

I'm coming to Orange for the open day on June 4th, which is a Monday and am staying overnight Sunday night, heading home Monday afternoon. I was wondering if you have any ideas of dentists I could visit on the Sunday afternoon, if there are even any open on Sundays at all? I had a quick look on the Yellow Pages website but there seems to be heaps, so I thought I should just ask here. ^_^

Thanks!!

You might be hard pressed to find a dentist that's open on Sunday in Orange. I did work exp at the Mills McAnulty one but that's only open from Monday-Friday. Try looking up clinics and giving them a ring. Alternatively you could try and get some work experience in Bathurst?

If you want you could do work experience with the dental faculty. We had a year 10 student sitting in one our lecture today so you could ring up the uni and enquire about that? Naturally they're only open Mon-Fri but you could try if you ever come up at a later stage.

I'll still be around on June 4 so maybe I'll see you at uni then :)

I think you would be hard pressed to find any dentist open on a sunday.

That's what I thought might be the case. I'll still ring around see if I can find any, thanks for the replies. If I can't find any dentists, I'll ring the uni about sitting in maybe during the holidays if their open :)

That would be very cool!

Our midyear break (for 1st year at least) is roughly from June 8 - July 4. So if you want to sit in I'd recommend coming outside of those holidays when more people are here and 1st/2nd year formal lectures are still on. :)

That would be very cool!
I'm not sure if I have an exam on that day yet but if you want we could arrange to meet up somewhere? Let me know if you do and we could figure something out. :)

That still gives me about a week and a half of school holidays to visit, that'd be really interesting to do I think.

That would be great actually!

There's no guarantee that you'll find our lectures interesting.. some of them are a bit of a snorefest :p

Sure just private message me and we'll work something out. I just found out I have a chem exam on the 4th so I'm not sure how long/when I can stick around but we could have a quick chat and if you're not given a tour I could do that for you too. :)

Haha, oh well, give me something else to talk about if I get an interview!

And I'll probably be there all day, so whatever time works for you, and a tour would be fantastic. I have no idea yet what will be going on but should get an email soon! Thanks heaps  you're too lovely!

Dental science at csu help!!!

hey guys this is my first post, im just wondering about a few things concerning the dental science bachelor at csu

1. it says the required atar is 90, is that the realistic atar required

2. in the form it requires you to fill out past work experience in dental or health clinics, im still in year 12 and have not completed any,
do they expect me to and will this disadvantage my application if i havent.

3. can you get accepted for an interview with just a good atar or is the application form equally important

Thankyou for your help in advance :)

You should read existing threads with information on this topic. Your questions have been answered before.

The short answer to your questions are:

1. No. 90 is the minimum, it is not the required. Most people are in the 94-98 range.

2. It won't inherently disadvantage you, but don't you think that doing work experience is a good idea? It'll give you a better idea of what's involved in the profession and I'd really recommend you do it, if only for your app. Doing work experience shows that you have a genuine interest in the profession. What are you going to say if, given an interview, they ask you "so what do you know about the dental profession?" or "have you done any work experience?" Don't you think you'd look a bit silly if you showed up at the interview not having done it?

3. No. Your app is a major factor in giving you an interview.

#mods move this thread to the CSU subforum or merge with existing CSU Q&A thread? :)

i was just wondering how important the work experience section is, i havent completed any work experience yet but ive asked around but the most i can get into is a couple of days just talking with dentist about what the job is about. my uncle overseas is a dentist and going to his clinic is what inspired me to want to do it :P but if i dont have any credible work experience is there any chance of getting into the course ?thanks again :)

It's not the be all and end all from what I understand :), they look at your overall application so just make sure that the rest is good!

Billy D, these questions are easy to find an answer for, have a look at this thread. Always read before posting. Thanks!
