CSU CSU Dentistry: Q&A and General Discussion

Okay, thank you very much for all your replies!
I'm sure I'll think up some more questions for you later ;)

Alot of people have been messaging me or asking me "How do you make myself stand out from the other 1,000 applicants?", so I thought I would give my response here for others to read. Firstly, the most important thing is be yourself. Make your application unique by explaining what is it that drew you to the dentistry profession in particular. Now it doesn't matter how many work experience slots you have filled out on the form. Its not the number that really matters. You could list a million clinics you went to and they will think, "great so what? what did you actually gain from this experience?" The whole idea of listing these experiences is so that you may refer to them within your responses and outline your reflections/ insights you gained from those visits. That is the key to that section. I had 15 days in total while other people who got in had 10 years in total. So don't think the days and the max places you have attended will increase your chances, cause it won't.

Another thing which I recalled Mighty mentioning earlier is ensuring grammar, written formally and so on etc and also have an understanding of the goals of the university itself. Going to an interview and not knowing anything about the uni might look silly :P and outlining what is it about CSU in particular within your application will show, you have put some interest and thought about attending this university. And my last piece of advice is outline your skill and qualities which make you an excellent applicant for this course. And using examples to support those statements. Good luck to everyone applying for 2013 Entry :)

Hi Guys, I have a question about how CSU decide applications into the dental science program for a non-standard.

I am planning to apply for dental science for 2013. I understand that the written application determines whether you get an interview, however, I am currently in my second year at university and I will only have my GPA from my first year and first semester of this year to include in my written application for 2013 entry. If I do get an interview though, will CSU then consider my GPA from the entire year (2012 and previous year) when they decide the final offers, as the results are released after september 30th?

I hope you can understand what I m trying to say.

thanks

Yep, your entire years worth of GPA will be considered. They do the interviews before results are released then add in your GPA to the application :)

You will have to contact CSU Dentistry Admissions and ask whether they will only take your first year into account or your two whole years. Each university is different in regards to what GPA they take into account.

Me again...

I was having a look at the application form and under the experience section, it says: "To support each ‘experience’ you must attach, to this page, any relevant references, statements from employers."

Is an attachment for each necessary??

Hmm, just realised it says you must

This is why I said try to get an extended period (ie. 1-2weeks, more if possible, or one day every weekend for a few weeks etc) of work experience with 1-2 different dental surgeries, as it's easier to ask for the references for that part of the application from them. The instruction says that you must attach it, so yes I think it's safe to say that it's necessary. In the event that you can't get a proper reference from them, asking them for a statement which says you attended work experience from xxx date to yyy date would probably be okay. A good reference from the work exp. place is definitely preferable, but don't worry too much if you can only get a statement from them.

Thanks for such a quick reply :)
I realised it said 'must' after I'd posted already, of course -_-

When do you think it's appropriate to ask for one?

Hmm. If it were me I'd probably ask for a reference toward the end of your work experience, ie. on the day you finish or the day before. Just ask them if it would be possible for them to write you a reference as you need one for your application. Alternatively you could just give them lots of notice and ask them when you start if it would be possible to get a reference from them when you finish your work exp.

Okay great, thanks. I just finished a week of work experience today but I want to hand in a thank you letter to them so I might just have to ask then.

Reading through the application, it asks for year 11 and year 12 reports, will they take into account that my school is academically selective? i.e. my reports haven't been super amazing, they aren't bad or anything, just would probably be a lot better if I attended my local high school. Thanks :)

Hmm not 100% sure but I don't think so. Doubt they look up whether every school is selective, private or public etc. I'm not actually sure what the reports are used for. Maybe as a secondary thing to your ATAR prediction to ensure that it hasn't been grossly overestimated?
Hutcherson might be able to answer.

hi!
I am currently studying at JCU, bachelor of science (sole purpose to get a good GPA to be at dental school). I have a previous degree (bachelor of commerce and administration, 2007)) from NZ. I was advised to do a Bsc course as chemistry and maths are pre-requisites for dentistry.

I am very keen on studying at CSU. Just wondering what the requirements will be for me because 1. I have a previous degree in commerce 2. I am a B.Sc student. I mean, will i be able to get in with my GPA from B.Sc or do I have to look at other options? Also I have worked at a hospital in Nepal for a couple of months, will this be considered as work experience? Thanks!

Hi Mao, welcome to MSO!

I'm pretty sure they'll take your GPA from your BSc, but I would advise calling up CSU to double check.
Working at a hospital in Nepal does count as work experience, but it kind of depends on what you did at the hospital. Was it anything dental related? For the application you'll also need to get a reference from that hospital or a statement saying that you did work experience there. I would recommend trying to get some work experience at dental surgeries so you can also put those down on your app. Read back through the previous pages for my, Hutcherson's and miss_universe's advice on what to do re: work exp.

Good luck! Feel free to ask more questions should you have any more :)

Your Nepal experience will be useful in the interview if not your app.

Hi guys long time lurker first time poster. I am currently doing an honours year in Science . As applications are submitted before I complete my honours year how exactly will they determine my eligibility for an interview? I am fairly confident I will receive first class honours at the end of this year but without it my GPA will not be all that competitive.
