CSU CSU Dentistry: Q&A and General Discussion

i was just wondering how important the work experience section is, i havent completed any work experience yet but ive asked around but the most i can get into is a couple of days just talking with dentist about what the job is about. my uncle overseas is a dentist and going to his clinic is what inspired me to want to do it :P but if i dont have any credible work experience is there any chance of getting into the course ?thanks again :)

You MUST be able to find work experience. Look everywhere, ask everyone. Worst comes to worst, get work experience in something similar to dentistry. Saying that, you don't NEED it, but it certainly helps. Instead, you could look at other areas of your life that give you good health professional qualities (leadership in school etc)

Hi guys,

I am wanting to apply for dentistry at CSU and thinking of doing an 'Arts' degree so I can increase my GPA, because the course I am in now is very difficult. I m a second yr uni student and in my first yr at uni I studied chemistry and biology.

If I change to an 'Arts' degree and get a very high GPA, will I get equal consideration to those who have studied a 'health' related degree?

thanks

They will use your GPA from your science as the competitive mark I am quite sure.

Cool I will get round to it soon I guess, I am going to apply for University Of Melbourne Doctor of Dental Surgery as I did not expect to score 62 on gamsat but some of you here have actually made me want to go to CSU

What is a "Written Application"

I'm planning to apply for dentistry at CSU and they require a written application: "2. Submit Written Application by 30th September" What is a written application?
Thanks guys

#mods Move this to the CSU Dentistry Q&A thread?

The written application is the form they have on their website that you have to fill out. It's got 3 questions that you have to answer in the space provided, as well as personal detail sections and areas to list work experience undertaken and attach references.

Hey guys, if I do work experience, what should I receive at the end of it as proof that I've done it. Also, where can I get a written application form? Its June now and it's very close to the date, I'm kinda nervous applying for CSU. *huff*

Thanks!

Get a letter from the employer/ owner of the practice. Something a long the lines of

'To whom it may concern,

This is a leter to recognise that Your name completed xx weeks at their practice name, which involved Whatever you did.

Regards,

Practice manager'

Thats the most simplest form, complicate it all you want. Application forms off the CSU website!

1 more question, In the application form, they require me to attach a copy of the passport photo. My passport photo was taken 3 years ago and I gotta admit, I really looked like a drug dealer back then. Is it possible to attach a similar passport-like photo? For eg, My school portrait?

Thanks!

Hey duong,

You don't have to attach your actual passport photo. I didn't like my passport photo so I took a photo, printed it out and attached that one.
Having said that, it doesn't really matter what you look like in your passport photo, it's not part of the selection criteria or anything so don't worry about it. (Also, I've yet to find someone with a super attractive passport photo :p )

My passport photo that I attached was a photo of me when I was 13 haha (Child Passport). And I applied when I was 17 so bit of a gap there :P

Hi everyone, (1st time posting)

I'm so sorry to be bothering you again with such simple questions. I am currently a 1st Year Physiotherapy student.

I've been reading around the posts regarding the GPA required to get into CSU for a while now. I noticed that they said a minimum GPA of 5 is required. I then noticed that Hutcherson said she had a GPA of 5.5 a while back, but when I read at another place, she said she got 6.

I'm currently standing on a GPA of 5.5 (which will have to be written on the application). My questions are:
1. Do they take the current GPA (in my case 5.5) or the GPA at then end of the year?
2. Will my current GPA of 5.5 and an ATAR of 94.85 be enough to get an interview assuming my written application is good and I had done a lot of work experience?

Please help me out, and thank you in advanced for assisting me with my misunderstandings. I'm also very sorry if my questions have been answered before and I am annoying you guys (i just cant seem to find them)

Hi wingofhope, welcome to MSO! :)

1. For final offers, they will look at your GPA at the end of the year. For interview offers, they will look at your current GPA (think of your current GPA as like a "predicted ATAR" for school-leavers who haven't yet received their ATAR).
2. 5.5 is good. I don't think they look at your ATAR once you have a GPA (but somebody correct me). It all depends on how good your application is.

Hope that helped :)

The higher the GPA the better. I would aim for a 6 for the end of the year. I had a GPA of 6 when I got my interview offer, but I'm assuming they used my final year GPA of 5.5 when I got my offer, or they may have looked at my ATAR of 98. Either way, you need a high ATAR or GPA to be competitive.

hey everyone!

Just a quick question . I just looked at CSUs' written application form for 2013 and it only has one page to respond to Professor Wilson ! intead of TWO pages for last years application form (2012). Is there something wrong or we are expected to answer those 3 questions on one page. *gulp . thanks heaps, starting to worry a lil ;)
Ta !
