CSU CSU Dentistry: Q&A and General Discussion

I would try get more dental work experience. Unless it was a medical clinic for a max fac or something I don't see how that experience is directly relevant and how they could give you a reference that would look favourably upon you as a strictly dental candidate? With these things my advice is to always play it safe and to think about all the other applicants out there - many other people will be applying with purely dental work exp., so while having medical work exp doesn't preclude you from a spot, your aim is to really try and improve your chances in any way possible.

I don't think the interviewers ask you questions based on your application. I'm not even sure of whether they read your application or not tbh.

I was asked about mine :)

But you are right. More experience would be better. However it isn't required (seemings i only had 2 places)

Must've changed it then - I wasn't asked about anything on my app.

No, I'm not saying "more experience" as in.. you need more spots. I only had 2 as well. I was saying more dental work exp as the poster mentioned that he only had 1 dental work exp reference and to use these instead of the medical if possible.

[OFFTOPIC] Haha and by me saying "more experience" i was referring to more dental experience as well :) #communicationbreakdown [/OFFTOPIC]

Oh oops, sorry about that. In any case, the poster only had 1 from what I gather and personally I think having just one spot out of 5 filled is a bit paltry... but like you said you really need to ensure that you get good references, not just generic ones saying "the above person did work exp at my clinic on X date" etc.

For my app i only had 2 days work at a dental practice, but the dentist did write a great reference for me. On the other hand i had worked at a hospital for 3 years as a radiographer.

I just started shadowing at a dental clinic nearby my house, in Singapore though. On my first day i did mostly observation and i did help the dentist with changes of suction tube, handling of "colored rubber bands" while the dentist worked on the braces of the patients. I have a concern, as this dental clinic i'm shadowing at is in Singapore. May I know what kind of contact details do i have to provide on the reference letter to "prove" my work experience? Contact number would be a Singapore number definitely, will CSU take that? Also, how about email address? hope to get some assistance! thank you!

If you just put the internation country code and province state code as well that'll be fine. :) Usually address, phone number and email are sufficient. :)

thanks for the quick reply! Another question, for the CSU application form. they asked for predicted grades if not most recent grades. will i be removed from the list the moment it's below ATAR 90? Or like Uni Adelaide the interview is purely based on Application (minus the ATAR) and final offer will be based on ATAR + app/interview? As I plan to sit for STAT as well as Senior External Exam (QLD external yr-12 equivalent exam) and both results will not make it in time for the written application. I have yet to check with CSU/UAC how they compute my Singapore A level results but the worst ATAR i can expect is 87.5 which is below 90.... or should i just include in the app form about me sitting for the extra exams to upgrade my entry rank?

They give you a form based on your final ATAR.. But to be honest your chances of getting an interview with a lower ATAR are not good. I would try and get a higher predicted ATAR if you can; the higher the better.

I am not sure how you would include that you are taking the STAT unless there is a specific spot on the form? I wouldn't include any forms etc extra to what they ask for on the app.

I get what you mean. Predicted ATAR is not going to work out for me as i'm not enrolled in any high school in Australia. Anyway I should get a formal assessment for my A level results as the ATAR 87.5 above only takes into account 3 subjects (which i scored A, C, C, pretty bad compared to the other subjects that are not included in the 3). Not so sure about where to include the STAT sitting thing too but but UAC will have my STAT results by end Sept so that set of results will be included in the UAC application. Maybe (probably) CSU will access that from UAC directly. Since I have to attach my most recent set of results so it wouldn't hurt for me to attach the results of all the subjects i sat for at year 12, hoping to be given a higher ATAR. nontheless i will check out the details with UAC and CSU after i'm in australia. Thanks heaps though! mighty i just read your blog entries and hope you're doing well in year 2! more practicals coming your way for sure.

I would try and call up the uni and see what they advise re: STAT.

Haha thanks, I'll hopefully get a new blog entry soon maybe when I'm procrastinating. Practical is pretty intense this semester but no sim clinic next sem so woo!! :)

Is there anyone from previous years that is willing to send me what they wrote for the last question on the application form ? I'm not sure how to structure it or even where to begin.

2014 applications arnt available yet so they may change the questions in general. I would wait to see what the questions are when they 2014 application is available.

Hi :)

The 2014 supplementary application form is now available
https://www.csu.edu.au/__data/asset...-Supplementary-Application-Form-DENT-2014.pdf

This year the hand written response (one page) involves you answering only one question:
Outline in your own words what attributes should be possessed by a rural dental practitioner

Remember to submit the form to CSU by 27 September 2013

Good luck to all the csu dent aspirants! :)

hello! just a quick question in regards to our reference letters:

are we allowed to attach photocopied versions of our dentist's reference letter? if yes, will we have to get it certified by a JP?

thanks in advance for helping me!!

Thank you iBolt!! Another question: one of my dentists sent me an electronic reference letter with a scanned signature. Will I have to get that certified by a JP considering how the original format is electronic?

Yes, you will still need to get your reference letter certified by a JP, as any official documentation included with your application must be verified as a true and accurate copy

In addition to iBolt's post, applicants are to "post" their supplementary application form to CSU. The requirement of the supplementary form being uploaded on UAC is incorrect as Judy Stone stated. Ignore the "document required to be uploaded" on UAC as it is an error.

I've just called them up to confirm so posting this here to save you guys some time :)
