CSU CSU Dentistry: Q&A and General Discussion

@
jb2014tl that font is horrible xD Might want to consider editing it. I'm only in first year so I can't really answer many of those questions. @Hutcherson and maybe @mighty will be your best bet.

sorry about that....

If Hutcherson and mighty could reply to this ASAP it would be appreciated. I have to make a decision very soon.

I appreciate this! Here we go:

1. How do you guys like the program so far? The facilities look very nice.....
2. How many simulation heads are there? Enough for one per student? I think I read 60?
3. If a student needs/wants extra practice, can they come into the lab on their own time to practice?
4. There are 16 clinical chairs.... plus an additional few larger rooms (8 or so?). With a class of 40, how does that work in later years? I have a brother in third year and he is literally in the clinical lab every day from morning to evening, just like all his classmates.. are there enough for all students? Do we use the additional ones in Wagga wagga?
5. Is there a radiology lab?
6. Is there a possibility to do research on the side?
7. What is the accreditation status? When I go to the ADA web site, it lists the accreditation until 2015, yet on the web site it mentions they are working on it.
8. Are there any exams a student has to take before entering the clinics?
9. Is there a removable prosthadontics lab? My brother asked me to ask you this. Not sure what it means. Is there a Radiology Lab?
10. How does a student get patients for the clinic? Do they have to get them on their own, or are they set up for you by the department?

-- Sorry for the many questions! I hope i'm not asking anything stupid in there..... else please disregard the question.

Thanks in advance!
J.

Sorry mate, I've been in an intensive pros block all week so I haven't had the chance to reply.

1. I'm loving the program so far. The small classes and one/one tutoring makes a huge difference.
2. 60 Simulation heads, enough for everyone since there are an average of 40 people per class. This allows other year groups to come in if there is another year using them.
3. In regards to extra practice, extra sessions are normally organised but you can't walk in when ever you want as the regulations of the lab require a supervisor.
4. The clinic roster is pretty straight forward, you are rostered to either be a dental assistant or clinician, so not everyone will be a clinician at one time.
5. Not too sure what you mean by radiology lab. We have x-rays units in the clinic while OPG's are taken at the Base Hospital.
6. There are research options in Year 4. I will be doing one next year myself!
7. CSU has been accredited till 2015.
8. Yes there are a number of pre-clinical exams taken before starting treatment on patients.
9. Yes we have a rem pros lab, we have a lab for all dent tech requirements.
10. We do not find our own patients, there is a waiting list and when we request a new patient, it is randomly allocate/ what requirements you need

Hi J, congratulations on your offers, I had a question for you. How is your GPA and did you have dental experience?

Thanks

Hey Nas! Thanks...I was pretty excited when i got the news. GPA i think we calculate differently in ameruca than you guys so wouldnt be of help. It was competitive. I volunteered at a dental office for more than 5 years during undergrad....plus lots of other volunteering stuffs. Where are tou from? You joining us soon too?

1. Yeah, overall I'm happy with the course and I'm glad I chose CSU. Having said that every school has it's problems and no course is perfect. I have no doubt that csu will produce qualified and competent dentists tho.
2. Yeah there's like 60 or so. More than enough, an entire bench has pretty much never been used.
3. For sim no. For lab/pros yes.
4. You're not in clinic all day every day. You'll have rostered days. There's generally 2 students per bay, one assisting and one clinician.
5. No radiology "lab", but there is radio graphic equipment. We use digital radiography units to take bite wings/periapicals. Patients are referred to get OPGs.
6. Research with the school? Not really atm. Course is very new, the school probably has more pressing issues than allowing students to undertake research within the faculty but I don't know for sure. I've never heard of a student doing it though.
7. Pretty sure 5th year has just been accredited.
8. Yeah, there's a barrier clinic exam before you're allowed to enter open clinic (with patients).
9. Yup, pretty well equipped. You do a decent amount in 2nd year 2nd sem; we do rem pros: bend retainers, make partial dentures, make secondary impression trays, affix porcelain teeth into a model, learn how to do pour ups etc. basic pros work.
10. Patients are set up for us. We rarely have to look for our own patients unless patients UTA/FTA etc.

hope that helped! I heard interview offers went out today; congrats to those who got them!! :)

Excellent. I appreciate everyone's help here with answering my questions. I have accepted my offer to CSU!!! A spot will open up shortly for JCU.

See you all soon.

Would someone in the Dental Science course at CSU kindly tell me about the course program, like what subjects did you do in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th years? When did you start to work on a model with plastic teeth? When did you start to see patients? what did you do in the very first practical session in your first year?

You can find all this information on the CSU website. I'll give you a quick rundown on first/second year anyway though. I believe both hutcherson and I have blogged on it as well if you want something more in depth.

You start work on a model with plastic teeth in first year second semester. Patients are 2nd year second semester. In the very first practical session it was boring lol - it was a sim clinic induction (learn about equipment, wipedown etc). Following that you play with some wax in lab or you start drilling on whip mix.

Thanks so much for the information, mighty. Would you be able to give me the link of the CSU website to the course program? I would like to see what the students learn from 3rd year. I had had a look in the CSU website yesterday but could not find the information except very brief description of the course under the headings "What is the course about?" and "What will I learn".

Thanks so much for the information, Hutcherson.

Hi mighty and Hutcherson, did you do your practical sessions at Orange campus only or were you allocated to go to other places for your clinical placements?

in 4th and 5th year you have placement in other locations, in the past this has just been other CSU campuses but it looks like they are branching out from next year with their locations.

I was wondering if there are any internationals doing dentistry at CSU since I heard that they are heavily disadvantaged there?
Did you have a perfect ATAR/ GPA? How many experiences did you put in your application? What do you think set you apart from other applicants especially rural ones that got you a place?

all the infor i got from this thread are very helpful!
it looks like CSU sends out interview offers at slightly different time each year?
