CSU CSU Dentistry: Q&A and General Discussion

Hey guys, sorry if this is the wrong place to post but:

According to the original post, around 100 are interviewed, and 40 get in, but around 70 offers are made (due to high decline rate of CSU), so is the interview really a 70% acceptance rate? or has that changed? Surely its not that high
I think there was 150 interviews depending if they all showed up, i believe around 50 offers are made (thats usually the cohort number for past years) and im sure they would give a deadline to accept or reject the offer before passing on that offer to another applicant, i could be wrong but i don't think they would give out 70 offers at once incase they all end up accepting it?

Yeah, someone said before 50 offers are accepted but around 70 are made, also, my interviewer told me there will be multiple rounds, main one is January 8 i think, and theres a smaller one on Dec 10 i believe

they always over off based on previous data, to save time, because if they were to offer exactly the number of spots, but they had the similar super high rejection rate, then they would be offering and top up offering for ages, if they over offer and get more acceptances then the intended number, then what they do is encourage people to defer until next year, or artificially increase the fail rate for the next year to force someone to repeat, and decrease the next years intake.

Wait what, why increase fail rate and decrease next years intake?

Because they took in more than the government designated for this year, and they have to account for that next year. It doesn't happen often, but it can happen.

apparently applicants
Oh phew, I didn't hear about any specifics dates regarding offers only that they will be sending out emails the next week or week after interviews to "touch base"
Apparently applicants will be notified by uac only if they are to success in receiving an offer. No emails will be sent to successful or unsuccessful applicants

Ahh guys I just received an email that for the Dec 10 offer round, you have to have the course as your first preference.

Is it going to hurt my chances to get in if I don't place it as my first pref because I miss out on this offer round??

Edit: I was under the impression that preferences don't really matter and won't affect your chances of getting into any one course. 🤦‍♂️

I may be wrong im not too sure, maybe one of the mods or someone with better knowledge can correct me, but i believe what happens is if you don't receive an offer for your first preference then you may still have a chance of receiving your second preference for that offer round.

Don't stress too much about it right now since theres nothing we can do about changing your course preference, fingers crossed for you tho!! :)

I think that's normally true but it says you "must" have their course as 1st preference which is a bit weird - then again my interviewer did say Jan 8 is the main round :)

Ok so. It is currently my third preference and I freaked out when I got this email. I called CSU and the woman on the phone laughed and said not to worry at all. Apparently they say that, but it isn't really true. She said you get an offer for your top preference that you're eligible for. She said that they tell people that because it's better for the uni if they have a lot of first prefs. It was unclear to me whether she meant that I still had a chance in this first round, or if she was talking about future rounds though. She did say to change it to your top preference when UAC lets you (after the 10th) to optimise your chances. I'm not sure how much I believe her, but it has reduced my stress levels!

Ah ok, they're just baiting us :p - I think they are telling us to put it as 1st pref so you don't get a Dec 10 offer for another course over theirs for this round - I think we should still be eligible - main round is Jan 8 anyway :)

I hope so! I am just torn about whether I should change my preferences to put CSU first after Dec 10 for the offer round on the 23rd of Dec!

As I have explained a few times, in previous years UAC's practice was if you are to receive an offer but have higher prefs not yet decided, this offer would be put on hold and denoted as "Qualified but pending a higher pref's result". It seems UAC is no longer doing this.

CSU asking you to place it 1st pref is (1) a carryover from previous years, (2) good for CSU's image, and (3) to pre-empt in case UAC returns to the previous practice. Bottomline is it costs nothing to place med prefs lower for now if you know med place offers are definitely not coming out in December.

So you're saying we should change it to put CSU dent first for now, and then put med courses above it before the Jan offer rounds where med offers come out?

Generally yes, but DON'T do that if you are a rural med applicant to WSU/JPM. I think WSU has released rural med offers in a Dec round in previous years.
