CSU CSU Dentistry: Q&A and General Discussion

Hi all, I am just wondering when the CSU dent interview invitation will be released normally? Thank you.
In prior years, they were supposed to be sent out at the end of October. For 2024 entry, they were sent early November instead. I think they may have been sent out in November for 2025 entry as well.

It's almost time for interview offers to come out. In light of that, for those flying in from interstate:

- There should direct flights to Orange from most major cities, but they they aren't daily. Sometimes every second day, sometimes weekly pending start location.
- It is cheaper to fly City --> Sydney and coach or train to Orange, but the train or coach takes 4-ish hours. I'd recommend flying if you want to be in tip top condition and can spare a few hundred.
-It is roughly $50+ and 25 minutes taxi ride from airport to city centre
- Arrive the day before if you're flying direct. Sometimes those flights are cancelled, and you'll need time if you need to go indirect.
- Alternatively, drive. Probably the cheapest and easiet if you're coming from the east coast.
- If you're staying overnight, and don't want to taxi to the uni, there are hotels/ motels near the city where you can bus in from like the Parkview (Roughyl $150ish/night). (Take cash and coins, the buses don't take card)
- You are being interviewed on the ORANGE campus. Do not book in Bathurst if you're flying. It's a 45 minute drive away.
- People do bring their parents/friends to support them. It's totally fine.
- Prep an outfit that works with or without a blazer/ jacket. It shouldn't get cold, but you want the option.
- Arrive early to the interview, sign your name off and wait. Be back at the interview location at least 15 minutes early if you going on campus at 10am for a 2pm interview (hotel checkout time - it happens)
- Taxis are limited and can (and do) take a long time to arrive. When departing, either pre-book a taxi or organise the time for your departure flight/ travel accordingly. When coming in, absolutely take up the flight attendents offer to book a taxi if you're flying direct. It's a miserable wait otherwise.
- You can get around most of the campus without an ID card. Just walk betwee the trees on the right of the main glass door in front of the pedestrian arean.
- There is a bathroom on either end of the building where the interview is.

-THE PERSON SIGNING YOU IN IS EITHER A MEMBER OF FACUALTY, A PROFESSOR OR THE DEAN OF DENTISTRY. BE POLITE. BE NICE. BE CONFIDENT. SMILE AND REMEMBER THAT THEY'RE INTERVIEWING YOU EVEN WHEN SIGNING IN.

Suggest you do health related courses at least make sure you can have a job in case you don't get into pathway. And also you can choose degree that allows you do research. At least you can get something in the future rather than just one thing.

I can give you a hand with that. I transferred in from a non-health related sector, but have access to people who transferred in from OHT. Though, this is from two years ago, so a tad outdated

hi anubis thank you so much!! this means a really big deal to me so really thank you so much, 2 years is not a problem, how do i pm you?

Hi, does any one any have rough details on the number of interviews offered for csu dent/what cutoff was, and how many places they have in their course. I'm interstate non rural. Thank!
You can google Bachelor of Dental Science UAC, you will know how many students they take normally. Unfortunately I don't think CSU will take interstate non-rural students. CSU mainly focus on rural/nsw students and CSU own students.

Do they bias rural/nsw students and own students even after releasing interviews? Because ive received an interview, so i thought that now i should be on the same playing field as those others.

I'm also metro interstate. Once you've got the interview, its fair game. The 26 students is a majority of internal students from CSU's internal transfer route and several who made it in via the UCAT route.

Hi, sorry for this really irrelevant and long post but I do have a few questions about the CSU dental science degree. For context this year, I applied medicine/dental science degrees that I thought I was eligible for which was the JMP (Newcastle, UNE) medicine and CSU dental science in reference to the selection data provided on MSO (thank you for providing them). In terms of my statistics, I am non-rural, living in NSW (no special requirements) and my UCAT score this year was 2400 and my GPA is sitting roughly at around 5.5 which isn't that great when compared the usual required for medicine/dental science.

I didn't receive an offer from JMP due to the fact that the UCAT score required for non-rural was very high this year but I was surprised to receive an interview offer from CSU so I thought the email I got could've been a scam/wrongly sent because I did read that people with much higher UCAT/GPA than me getting rejected (please let me know if this could be the case thank you).

I did accept the invite to do the interview and sorry if this sounds selfish but I am okay with not getting into dentistry (medicine is my main goal) so I do feel that I am not too stressed. However, I do want to try to prepare for the interview as best as I possibly can because I do want to practice doing MMIs for if I ever were to do one in the future again. I have occasionally checked reddit and MSO for what the interview questions and responses could be like as reference but it does feel quite overwhelming where to begin to prepare for the interview so could I ask for any tips/advice in regards to my situation. Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you.

That's fair I suppose. Just think about whether you'd be willing to go if you received an offer, becuase for non-rural, its very difficult to jump from dentistry to medicine. If yes, all good. If no, try to turn down your offer quickly, so the spot can be opened up to someone else (they close after 7 days anyway).

Ok, onto the interview part. There's a few things you can do:
1. Browse forums for questions and answers - i did this and basically practiced with no one but myself for 3 weeks. (8/10 - really helpful, but only worked bc I had a strong foundation with interviews already)
2. Draft answers and practice in front of a mirror. (4/10 - not bad, but doing it with another person would've been better)
3. You can reach out to a current student and run a training session and mock with them.
4. Reach out to other interviewees (from CSU) on the forum and join a group
5. Look up general strategies to interviews. Those used for job interviews are still applicable here.

The MSO interview portal is really good for med school interviews with a strong emphasis on scenario questions, but this interview only has 1 scenario question, so less relevant but still important

Also as a baseline, a good place to start is learning how to introduce yourself. Not in a, "Hi I'm paneful." Kinda way but in a, "Hello, I'm paneful, it's a pleasure to meet you. I've been looking forward to this today, so I really hope I don't live up to my name." Kinda way.
