Curtin Curtin Medicine: General Questions and Discussion

Should I call her again? I just don't know what else to say that would result in her saying something different than before, and this time getting a bit frustrated. I mean I have nothing to lose, but I'm not sure a repeat call with the same things would give me something to gain.
Any suggestions about the wording of what I should say, and what not to say?

Wow, this is very strange. Did you talk to a person named Priya in the admissions team? I talked to her a few days ago and she seemed really kind. I'll see if I have her phone number.

Wait so you did disclose your own specific results and she was dismissive?

Edit: According to Umatmatt888's comment I'm pretty sure they've dun goofed here! Maybe some type of error in their calculation formula as A1 suggested?
Well I didn't say them. I said my UCAT and ATAR were higher and she only heard me saying UCAT I think because she went on about how selection rank is 60%. Maybe she misheard me. I tried calling her rn, she ain't picking up.

Wait is it the same person each time? If so, I would just say "sorry to bother you again blah blah" then outline your exact results (ATAR/UCAT), which are clearly enough to get an invite even if you don't have another person to compare to. Then, outline the exact results of the person reported on here who had lower results, state you don't believe they have any equity bonuses, and reiterate how that is possible

Yup it was her. She seemed quite stressed out today. Said she was very busy. the number I got given was 0892262334

Ahh I see, I think she misinterpreted your worries as someone who was just confused and/or desperate to get an invite lol? I would definitely advise to try again. Maybe do it tomorrow cuz it might be too late now - its already 7 so working hours should be over?

Yup thats the phone number. She might be stressed out from all the calls today. Maybe call her again (or try to) and emphasize fact that both ur atar and ur ucat is higher (like u said). Worst comes to worst, send her an email (but she is pretty slow with her emails I think).

What came out of it? Did the student end up getting an interview/offer?!
A whole bunch of that year's applicants got interviews the next year and I believe Curtin offered an extra ~10 places in the next year's intake to fit them in.

What should I do about that. I called the admissions lady and she said to email her about my case specifically.
Email her your specific scores and explain to her that would be among the very top applicants.

As the last resort, drop her a hint that Curtin had made calculation errors before causing the Curtin Med Dean to be apologetic for it. Surely we don't want to go down that path again.

Ahh my bad, forgot they are so behind over there lol! Keep trying until 5 then probably just rest until tomorrow. Send an email in the meantime as A1 suggested

Wow that seems absolutely inadequate - they basically wasted a year of those applicants' lives if they didn't get an offer elsewhere! Can't believe unis could make such serious mistakes - and overall just be mysterious and ambiguous - about dates, selection criteria etc. for something as important as med admissions :p

All the time during invite & offer stages Curtin Admissions would not believe us that their method was wrong. Well after that one of the applicants engaged a lawyer to challenge Curtin, it was only then that Curtin "discovered" their error. So the only way they could make up was the next year.

Without looking into the details, is it possible Curtin is preferentially selecting WA applicants here?

Just called her. She said she could confirm my atar and ucat, and that my selection rank was below what others got to get an interview. Which is BS if it’s 60% ATAR and 40% UCAT but whatever. Either others had a boost on their ATAR from equity programs or it’s wrong. She said the whole thing had been tripled checked so Idk

She confirmed the ATAR as 99.75 and UCAT as 3220.

And she couldn’t disclose others infos which makes sense so there’s no way to refute them.

🤷‍♂️😂

Mate I have no clue how that is possible

Even with equity schemes and whatnot for other applicants your results should be an easy walk-in to an interview lol - unless Curtin are the new USyd and Melb :p

Ah well, I hope you get an offer in ur home state :)

You could email the admissions team and ask if they are preferentially inviting WA applicants - nothing to lose by doing so.

Here's a Qld interstate invite with 99.3 99%ile (3250)
> 2021 Entry Interview Invite DATA COLLECTION

Your UCAT is 3220, marginally below and considering UCAT is weighted less than ATAR, how can that bring down your 99.75 to below 99.3 in combination.

This looks ominously similar to their error last time, in which the formula they use is straightout 60% ATAR + 40% UCAT *score*, therefore your 30 UCAT deficit needs 20 ATAR points to make up. See how ridiculous that is!!

In the interview offer collated data page, a QLD applicant got a 99.30 ATAR and a 3250 UCAT and got in. But ATAR is preferenced in their calculation, plus a 0.45 ATAR is much higher imo than a 30 point UCAT difference. So Idk beyond the WA potential bias, there are also calculation issues.

*I can find people who have both UCAT and ATAR lower than me, but this student was the same state as me, so it cancels that aspect of the potential issue.

Someone with a 98%ile from Vic got in with no bonuses stated? So if that is true and UCAT is incredibly favoured accidently then Endgame should have got an interview. Although this applicant is a graduate applicant I think so maybe they are in a different pool??
