Dentistry Entry Discussion and Questions

Also, don't worry about being an existing uni student in first year; a majority of the students who are from AU/NZ are existing tertiary students who transfer, so you won't be in a minority :)
Just a question, is it true that more than half of UQ dent students are international students?

Yes, from UQ admissions website, it's listed that 56% of the 2020 intake were international students.

Hey all,

I don't know if anyone else is having the same issues as me (or if this has been answered elsewhere) but when I apply to dental courses through UAC, Bachelor of Dental Health Science offered by Griffith University does not appear for me. Anyone else? I can see B. Dental Tech and Prosthetics and stuff but not dental health science, lol.

Thanks in advance!!

I definitely remember someone else already reporting this, so I’m guessing it’s been removed from UAC. You could call them to confirm. I don’t suppose you noticed if Griffith GC Med was a UAC option?

Hi guys im new here! I was wondering whether Uadel will take my ATAR into consideration instead of my GPA as it is much more competitive despite having finished the HSC in 2018? I saw on their site that Higher Education entries are assessed by GPA but I also have heard they take whichever is higher. Anyone can clear this up for me? Thank you

I think in a majority of cases the uni will look at your latest education, if it is greater than or equal to 1FTE, irrelevant of if it is better or worse than hs; all unis will look at what is worth more when you reach 0.5 FTE of uni in a degree just out of HS though, unless it is UNSW, which will do an average of the two

Thanks for your prompt response! I guess im screwed.. I am a 2nd year dual commerce student at UNSW. My Atar was 99.3 and my GPA is 5.47.... Do you know what that is as an average?

Sorry I misread you. I understand now you meant UNSW med. I am hoping to get into Dentistry anywhere. Im assuming a 5.47 GPA is quite low for anything :c

Uhh, if you are only look at dent then there is no need for an average, but if you are looking at UNSW med, then I can tell you it will be too low, below the 99.25 cutoff, I apologize to be the bearer of bad news :((( Your gpa in general is kinda borderline for all dent schools as well, CSU would be your only option I think if you can bump it up to a 5.5, other than that it might be worth transferring to a new course or even to a new uni and getting that gpa off your hands, and doing one year 1fte with a higher gpa at a new uni, so it disappears off of your transcript (I think that is how it works anyway)

Feel free to ask any other questions as well :)

hey! i am a first year university student. what dental schools am i able to apply to in australia? the websites are quite confusing.
You can also apply to UniMelb, USYD and UWA through the graduate entry process once you’re in the final year of your degree. Refer to the university websites and the GEMSAS website for further details.

Hi everybody.this is my first post.I will be reallry grateful if you guide me.I am international student
I have completed my bachelors degree in an Asian country . I want to apply for a masters degree in australia and after becoming permanent resident my purpose is applying for dentistry school..now I have some questions:
1.my cgpa is 3.45/4.00..and my last 2 year is 3.75/4.00.. how can I convert it in Australian grades?
2.Is this a competitive gpa?how the australian universities calculate it?for example canadians only consider last 2 years...
3.is completing a masters good idea for improving my chance in dentistry? Is the gpa of masters calculate or they only consider my undergraduate courses?
4.Can I apply for graduate entrance pathway like melbourn university?do they accept international bachelors?...
I just want some guidness about admission of dentistry in Australia so Any comment will be really appreciated..thanks..

Hi and Welcome to MSO :)

That is ok, I am happy to help with your questions; Just so you know, you will be able to use your gpa from overseas, but the differentiator will be whether you can apply as a Commonweath-supported student or an international student. So if you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident (don't quote me on that there is probably more information on this), you can get a CSP which is much cheaper than international fees. But if you are not either of those, then you will have to pay for international student fees.

1./2 To calculate your GPA, the unis will use your whole gpa from your degree, not just the last 2 years; and to find your gpa you need to get the %age mark from your subjects and turn it into a 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 grade, with 7 - >85%, 6 > 75%, 5 >65% etc; this changes between some unis, but generally it is is consistent across all undergraduate dent unis. Just a quick estimate gives you approx. a 7 gpa considering a 3.3 is 87%, which means you are eligable for all unis - UPDATED Dentistry Schools Selection Criteria Y12s & Non-standards this will show you which ones - your gpa should be good enough for all (apart from the pre-entry ones, which you can go through the graduate pathway)

3. No, you shouldn't complete a masters because it risks dropping your gpa below what you need, so your gpa is enough already

4. Yes you can, they do.

General info: If you are not an Australian Citizen, you won't need to sit UCAT for any of the unis, although there will be similar tests, like the ICAT for some of them or the MCAT for graduate entry schools; but the cutoff is much lower for international students. UQ, Griffith, JCU are unis that I know don't need these. I am not too savy on the international student side of things though.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask :)

thanks for your complete answer🙏🙏 ...it really helped me..I have heard that some universities look at last 3 years.is this not true?all dental schools look at all the courses?
actually my cgpa is calculated according to WES(for US system). So I think if I calculate it course by course in Australian grades it will be lower than 7.
I want to know what is the minimum gpa for admission in dental schools.?(Can someone be accepted with 5.5 or 6 gpa?(I know that this is impossible in Canada since they really care about GPA ..Is this the same in Australia?
and if I can become a permanent resident what factors should I have to considered as a csp?they want 7 gpa for example?how many people can become csp each year?is this somthing that I can count on or this is only for special students ?and what about BMP?
thank you really much:)🙏
