Dentistry Entry Discussion and Questions

Do UQ and UAdel have a maximum number of NSL places for dentistry? For UQ (which doesn't have interviews), do all NSL students who meet the high requirements for UCAT and GPA get in? Surely more than 30 people qualify?

Hi guys,

Given the pandemic situation, would we expect the cutoffs for entry to increase or decrease this year?

Since people are now spending all day at home and have more time to study, I am projecting the cutoffs to increase a lot. However since education has moved online and the quality of education is taking a hit, I also see a reason why people could end up performing slightly worse on exams and therefore cutoffs to decrease slightly. Also some uni's like La Trobe are not proctoring their exams (my subjects at least), meaning we don't have to use a camera and screen record (potential to cheat) whilst other unis have to. This would mean people in my circumstances have an advantage in applying for 2021 admission and so maybe the cutoffs will increase?

I'm applying for an internal transfer into la trobe dentistry and I am on track for a 93-94 wam for first semester and hopefully will stay consistent for the second - I've heard that a 90 minimum wam has been enough in past years but do you guys foresee this to increase or stay the same this year given the circumstances.

Just looking for insights into how cutoffs will be affected this year in general. Perhaps the UCAT cutoffs will increase since its a self-study thing and GPA cutoffs will decrease.

Thanks
hey!!
I’m looking to do this exact pathway next year.
could you please send me a private message so I can ask some questions?Would be great help. Thanks!

High 80s as in 88/89 didn't get in. 85 would unfortunately have little to no chance for an internal transfer. La Trobe admissions are generally very upfront about this, citing 'Whilst a WAM of 85 is required, to be competitive you realistically need much higher' or something to that effect.

No, UQ or UADEL don't have a maximum number of NSL places. And to your second question, no they have 34 spots for people who are CSP students, and everyone who gets over the 99 hurdle gets put into a pool and compared via their ucat score; which means there is no ucat cut-off it is just the highest 34 students. Yeah, definitely more than 30 people would qualify, if it wasn't for a majority of the people who do going into med, or getting into a dent school in a different state. The 99 atar/6.5 gpa hurdle also cuts a fair number of people off.

Hi, I recently graduated with a GPA of 6.3 after one year in B Health Sci. This is because I had a lot of credits transferred over from a previous degree (from the same university, different campus). In my transcript it shows results from my previous degree (which were not great) and I was wondering if uni admissions take into account all results or just the 1 year from my completed Health Sci degree? Thanks in advance!

I think they will take into account the results from the previous degree, if your transcript for the health sci degree has them in it. They will take your GPA at the end of the transcript.

Which uni are you going to apply to? Most dent schools will include transferred units when calculating your GPA.

I was guiding a friend through their UAC application last night, and Griffith Dentistry and Physiotherapy are no longer options there. Have they removed themselves from the UAC pool?

Last year I was able to apply for Griffith through both UAC and QTAC

I tried this UAC link > UAC Undergraduate course search - University and College courses available

Click on Griffith is showing only courses starting 2nd/3rd trimester this year. Maybe they don't upload 2021 course codes until August?

Are the TAC applications different for NSL? Will uni results be spent straight to them and in time? Is there anything different we should be wary of?

It's practically the same. One difference I know of is with UAC you tick a select button whether you're Y12 or uni student, I presume the latter takes you to an extra page where you declare all your uni studies & uni student numbers. UAC will obtain your results directly.

I have no idea how to private message someone here sorry. I read somewhere that you need to have made a minimum number of posts before you can pm so thats probably why I can't. I'm in biomed.

Hi,
i just got my 2020 UCAT score of 2820. I am from Western Sydney and non-standard with a 6.38 GPA (2nd year pre-med) (If you count the HDs i plan to get in sem 2 of 2020). Does it round to a 6.4 and am i competitive for UQ Dent?
Also would it be worth me doing another 2 units this semester to boost my GPA to a 6.5 so i can make the UQ Dent cut? Or could a 6.4 suffice with 2nd round interviews?
sorry i know a lot of Qs but any thoughts/ insight in response would be appreciated greatly =)

With a GPA below 6.5, you don’t meet the 99 rank hurdle, and you’re therefore ineligible for UQ dentistry. So yes, if you want to go to UQ for 2021 entry then you’ll need to do more units to lift your GPA.

As for your UCAT score, we aren’t answering the “what are my chances” questions until the percentile calculator is released.

Hey Crow. I have a GPA 6.5 and am working through drafts of my written application for JCU dent. Would I have a chance at all there based on my GPA. Or is there no chance at all? I am working hard to make sure my application is the best I can do

Yep, 6.5 is definitely competitive for JCU dentistry - the written application will by far be the most important factor, so make sure you dedicate plenty of time to it!

Your GPA is definitely competitive for JCU, but other than reassuring you of that, we can’t say much more because the written application component is so vital to interview/offer spots.
