Flinders Flinders Medicine: Provisional Entry General Discussion

I can't find the provisional entry information from their site.
So I guessed they changed to the direct entry; like the direct entry pathway in UNSW or Adelaide.

It’s this one. The best comparison is probably Griffith Uni. Graduate entry to the course is in the final 4 years, so the first two are the ‘provisional’ years though they class it as a double degree (but you’re not a Med student in years 1&2 from my understanding). You need a GPA of 5.00 at the end of the initial bachelor degree to progress to the MD, hence provisional entry to medicine.

ETA: I don’t believe this is a change from any recent set up?

Flinders is a bit confusing.

Most provisional degree's are a 3 year undergrad (or 3 year accelerated like Griffith - 3 years worth of units in 2 years) and then auto matriculation into postgrad med.

Flinders is equivalent to a 2 year undergrad (72 units) and a 4 year MD (144 units). But it's not provisional like any other uni is, its like an actual unit [BClinSci, MD] together, like a direct entry undergrad, but it's also not direct entry undergrad because it doesn't come under the funding cluster for medicine cause undergrad costs $9,429 a year compared to medicine's $11,300 ...

Is there GAMSAT and Interview before MD ?

Bear in mind that 99.95 is the selection rank (i.e. ATAR after adjustment factors have beena added), not raw ATAR. SATAC (and Flinders, by extension) is quite generous with equity bonuses.
That's a good point! However, from this year onwards, SATAC no longer offers UES to students who repeat year 12 at a school with a Social-Educational disadvantage, which could potentially drop down the ATAR requirements for this year? Who knows haha :p

EDIT: Information from the SATAC website

I noticed this^ last week but waited for someone to bring it up first.

2-3 years ago I pointed out this UES option (and was promptly smacked haha). My point was if it's something not to be unfairly taken advantage of then SATAC ought to close the loophole. I'm glad they now have.

Similarly I also noticed UNSW has taken care to specify that, to be eligible for the disadvantaged-school criteria student needs to be at the school both Y11 & Y12. I welcome this clear definition.

Otoh if UWA & Curtin don't care enough to make it so clear, I have no hesitation suggesting borderline students to seek out disadvantaged schools to be eligible for UWA/Curtin's disadvantaged-school pathways.

was this only changed this year? And so could that mean the UCAT cutoff could decrease slightly?

As Fan says, its new as of this year as last year they had a different system.

The UCAT cutoff has been historically quite low as UES pushes off a lot of potential applicants for the provisional program. A lot of my cohort is made of those people who have repeated a year to try for medicine. No one can tell you the exact cutoff until the offers come out but I think it will be slightly lower than last year but higher than years prior.

COVID gave a lot of equity adjustments last year so the UCAT requirement shot up a bit and I expect it to do the same this year.

In my year 6yrs ago, lowest ATAR was 99.85 + 90ish %ile, lowest UMAT I knew of was 99.95 + 76th %ile.
Then lowest ATAR crept up to 99.90 and 99.95 needed mid-80s %ile.

Last year, probably 2020 intake too, I think no 99.90s made the cut and the 99.95s needed around 90th %ile.

If this year doesn't have as many UES 99.95s the UCAT cutoff should drop but likely not below mid-80s %ile, because at that point offers would go to 99.90s with very high UCAT (due to Flinders' formula 90% ATAR + 10% UCAT).

Hey guys anyone know why my SATAC thing says im "Not currently eligible for consideration" for flinders but all my other ones are saying "Awaiting assessment"?

It probably just means SATAC haven't got around to finalising all Flinders applications yet. This honestly happens every year and is nothing to worry about for the most part (there are very occasional incidences where the applicant has failed to complete a step in the process and that renders them ineligible). TAC codes and comments are often quite arbitrary. UAC is especially notorious for this.

Good. People who sink this low are actually disgusting. It’s quite shocking how it took until now for institutions like SATAC and other unis like UNSW to be aware of the loopholes.

Hey guys, I know this will depend on personal preference, and I've read about 'prestige doesn't matter in medicine' posts. But interested to hear your thoughts on which uni should be put as a higher preference, Flinders or Adelaide Bonded. Thanks..
