The UNSW selection criteria for non-standards is oh so flawed. It’s ridiculous.

Yeah it's been a pretty fucky year all round for nn-standards

Considering non standards can only apply to 4 total unis and 3 of them had massive changes to their selection criteria with no acknowledgement (as far as I am aware) is pretty bad imo
- WSU changing their weights on each section (not that this was ever public information)
-JMP removing minimum cutoffs and selection based on one section moving to just an aggregate
- UNSW allegedly adding very high minimum cutoffs and no longer following their averages system whilst still advertising it on their website

Changes in selection criteria without informing applicants to any degree imo shouldn't be happening. To apply for medical school it takes a shit ton of time and money and to not at the very least inform candidates that the system by which they select candidates could be subect to change (if not just outlining the exact change - very easily could have been done in JMP's case) is pretty unacceptable imo. So many candidates have been screwed out of spots - that mum who had to manage kids and study just to get screwed over by JMP or WSU ( i forget) is a pretty fucked story. I was honestly expecting UNSW & WSU interviews based on the criteria in previous years but got destroyed by this new criteria (somehow even higher weighting on VR for WSU + the min atar cutoff for WSU (99.25 > 99.2)) and with such limited options for non-standards to apply to, my marks, time and money have effectively gone to waste

I received a follow up email from UNSW Med saying that they received word from UNSW admissions that my final UAC ranking hasn’t been received. I assume they’re making reference to the fact that I’ve actually finished my degree (UAC hasn’t received my final term results yet) + have been emailing them about this for about 2 weeks now. They said disregard the rejection email and that my application is still open and will be reassessed for January interviews 😎

I got the same email, "I am sorry to say but we have not received your final academic rank from UAC. You will be considered for the January interview round. You are welcome to contact UAC to find out why your results have not been finalised. If you have any news for us, let me know."

However, my Trimester 2 results were released all the way back in early November 2019 so UAC should have received it and sent it to UNSW by now, and my Trimester 1 + Trimester 2 results should have been sufficient for interview consideration because that's 1.25 FTE worth of results (≥ 1 year worth of full time education) which covers all my First Year Subjects and 2019 Academic Year Subjects.

If UAC are waiting for my Trimester 3 results, which they really shouldn't be because my Trimester 3 results don't get released until late February 2020 (and also the fact that the Summer Trimester isn't really considered part of my 2019 study), UAC can't expect to get those by the January round interviews either.

I am really confused as to what's going on and what I should be doing...

I’d reply to the email now explaining your situation, then call them tomorrow and direct them to your email and ask for an answer. Better to sort it early I say.

I have, literally just emails and phone calls flying everywhere today hahahaha, I just hope UAC do their job and send UNSW all my results by the January round so I can at least get an interview by January. It would be (just a tiny bit) unfair if I didn't get any interviews because UAC failed to send my results to the uni.

I have the same problem; my uni finished early november and I got my marks mid november; all the other tacs have updated my results but no not uac; just the one I need lmao.

In regards to JMP, how could JMP have done more then they already did? I get the frustration as a graduate myself but JMP did not make any last minute changes or do anything which “screws people over”

JMP were clear from the outset that they would be using an aggregate of the UCAT score (as opposed to their previous weighting’s in UMAT) and considering every uni switched to UCAT this was literally their only change. They kept the same number of interview positions and ucat cutoff is determined by the number who apply. This was very clearly advertised on the UoN website and their prospectus so they did inform you, you just failed to read it.

I tanked my VR section and got no WSU invite, but again, WSU criteria for scaling (as in previous years was classified but likely skewed towards section 1 bias) was again this year heavily weighted to VR (the closest section to UMAT section 1)

I can’t speak for UNSW as their ATAR requirements as opposed to GPA is archaic and dumb in my opinion to base someone’s aptitude of a high school completion over 10 years ago and not their most recent degree.

TLDR: I get you’re annoyed but the universities were pretty Transparent considering the first use of UCAT, I think your anger is misplaced.

I’m not a mum, but I managed to work a full time job, whilst studying a Full time load, and managing a side business and studied 2-3 hours a day for UCAT... if you or your mum want it then you’ll put the effort in next year.

My marks final term marks will be released 21 December loll.

I’m sitting at about a 6.166 GPA, 3 years completed. Without my final term result, my GPA converts to 96.3 (confirmed by UAC). With my final term result (which would put me in the 3 years completed category), my GPA would convert to 99. That paired with my ATAR of 99.95 (with EAS bonus), I should be at about a 99.5 ATAR equivalent. I know that I should qualify for interview judging by the scores posted so far. I was expecting a follow up email regarding this tbh.

hey suppose u get an interview for unsw but ur atar is about 98ish but because of EAS u make it past the cutoff. after the interview, does the atar stay as 98ish or as the EAS one when they are deciding who to pick with the ranking and stuff?

The score they’ll use is ATAR+EAS bonus points.

Just called unsw med and the lady told me they no longer do averages of ucat and atar but instead they have separate thresholds for each criteria which was 2800 something ucat (can't remember where in then 2800 range it was specifically) and a 99.25+ atar. :/
How come I got an interview offer with an ATAR of 98.35? I'm really confused....
