General Medicine Entry Discussion and Advice Requests

Thanks, Crow! I doubt my GPA will be high enough, though I did calculate that if I nail exams for current semester, I'll just get it over the 5.75 mark. Meanwhile, I smashed out an application and posted it off yesterday. I wrote one application from the heart, didn't refine it and didn't attach letters of support due to lack of time. Instead, I printed off a newspaper article on me from years ago which talks about my orphanage and work with a fistula hospital in Ethiopia, as well as my desire to study medicine. Hoping that going rogue will stand out from the crowd and get me an interview! We'll see!

Oh and thank you LMG for the support! I did read all your words of advice and hopefully took them on board sufficiently!

Good luck!! Please keep us posted :D

Ah fuck fuck fuck.

I didn't realise that UNSW and Newcastle required a separate online application by the 30th, and I only realised when I went to login to UAC today.
I've had some extenuating circumstances over the past 2-3 weeks (death of family member), could I ring them up and ask if they'll still take some late applications? Or am I truly fucked.

I don't think WSU needs an external application thankfully, and Sydney is not clear enough.

It's too late to start applying to other schools-should I chalk this up as a loss, pick something like engineering and pathway in? I've gotten early entry into ANU already.

Ring them up ASAP and let them know about your personal circumstances, it's only been a few days since applications closed

I tried UNSW and their future student line is closed, should I wait until monday? Or send an email today and call on Monday as well

You're not going to get a response on a weekend (via email or phone), so it's up to you but be prepared to wait until Monday. If you do decide to email today, definitely still call on Monday. I'd probably do both as I'd personally want the reply in writing if they do say they'd accept late applications.

Hi, I wasn't sure where to post this question - I'm in my 4th year of uni after transferring degrees once, so I'm in my 2nd year of a Science degree. I've applied to WSU and Newcastle but I'm worried about my GPA. It's currently 6.3 which is past the cutoff but my GPA for my previous degree that I transferred out of was around 5.3. Will they use my previous GPA as well or only my current one?

They do not combine two separate GPAs, only the most recent study program is used provided it meets the minimum FTE length (one semester for WSU, one year for JMP).

In your case if you had some units transferred from the 1st degree into the 2nd, they may be included in the 2nd's GPA.

Is there a thread for interview offer questions? to discuss when interview offer emails are released?

Thanks heaps for the info!

You can use the 2019-2020 dates in this post as a general guide > Interview Invites and Dates 2019-20

I haven't been keen enough to update it for this year. The only change I'm aware of is Monash will do the first round interviews much earlier than last year (since they are splitting this round into a pre-ATAR & a post-ATAR batch).

Does anyone know the Medicine universities that have confirmed they will be undertaking online interviews thus far?

hey guys,
I am confused about non-standard entry and want to clarify some things.
I graduated with a Bachelors with a GPA of 5. And currently I am studying another Bachelors degree (first year) with a GPA of 6.5. Would I be able to apply as a non-standard this year considering I have done UCAT or in my 2nd year?

Thanks

By end of year, if you've done 1 semester (for WSU & JCU) or 1 year's worth of units (for JMP) your 2nd degree's GPA will displace the previous GPA. You would be eligible to apply this year if you did do UCAT, however you must have submitted a TAC application before 30 Sept. If you didn't you'll have to wait till next year.

Hi A1 thanks for your reply.
So, for non-standard entry, is it a criteria to be a recent school leaver? And can you apply as a non-standard in your 2nd year?

Thanks
Al

You don't need to be a recent school leaver, and you can apply in any year of your current degree (I applied from 2nd year last year). You don't even need to be a current student anywhere else - they'll take your GPA from whenever you did tertiary study.

I graduated with a doctorate in 2014 (having already graduated with bachelor and honours degrees before then) and received a med offer as a non-standard applicant in 2018... there's definitely huge scope for application eligibility via the non-standard route.

Some guy and LMG thanks for replies. Just one more question. When applying do they consider your most recent GPA? As my GPA from my previous degree is not that great.
