Griffith Griffith Dentistry: Admissions General Discussion

Hey Guys! I currently study at La Trobe University seeking entry to Griffith Dent. Is it true that as long as I maintain an A grade average (La Trobe equivalent of a HD) for all my subjects, this be considered a 7 according to QTAC? As La Trobe ‘A grade’ is 80+, if I have a grade between 80-84, will this be considered a 6 or a 7? Thanks :)

As long as there is a grade A average written on your transcript, but if it is percentages, then they will go off those. If there is both, they go off the grade as well. To be on the safe side you could contact Griffith just to make sure. Best of luck!

I was just wondering I heard in previous years people have applied to Griffith dent using UAC so they can get accepted a few days earlier than the QTAC round but when I tried to submit my preference on UAC they said the course is cancelled. So does that mean I can only apply on the QTAC site?

Yep, they pulled Griffith medical science from UAC last year so it would make sense that they’ve pulled dentistry too this year. No need to offer through two different TACs and it probably just creates extra work for Griffith.

Hey guys! I'm in a slightly odd situation with uni so I'm not expecting definitive answers but any help is much appreciated :)

So I have to sit a supplementary exam in mid-January (date non-negotiable) for one of my uni units, which means I'm probably ineligible for Griffith at the time of offering (as I would have only 'completed' 7 units). Assuming they finish processing the results by the end of January (there is no official release date for supps), would this be too late for a QTAC offer since Griffith only really offer in the January main round (even if I manage to get all 7's)? Or is this more dependent on if there's room for top-ups?

I know I'm kind of over-worrying wayyy too early but if Griffith is a bit of a write-off for my situation then I guess I have plenty of time to come to terms with it.

You could try and contact Griffith/QTAC for them to expedite the sending of your updated results as soon as you have them available, and then hope to nab a late round offer from Griffith.

However, if you mean supplementary assessment in the sense that you haven’t passed that unit and you’re doing a final supp exam as an opportunity to pass, that would mean your results at best would consist of 7*HD and 1*P which would come to a 6.625 GPA. Unfortunately this is unlikely to be competitive enough for Griffith dentistry.

Thanks for the speedy reply! At the uni I go to, supplementary exams are the equivalent to 'deferred exams' for those with misadventure/illness who couldn't sit the exam. Sadly there's no supps in the "almost passed" sense - if you're just under a pass they just fail you and you gotta repeat :(

Also, do you happen to know the cohort size of Griffith dentistry? The 2020 QTAC document says there were 82 enrolments (not sure if this excludes late withdrawals) whereas in 2019 there were 62.

Hey everyone, i'm a griffith dent hopeful for 2021. If i'm fortunate enough to get a place, i'm hoping to apply for credit transfer for two subjects in tri 1, meaning i will only need to take two subjects. Just wondering what are peoples opinions on taking on some second year units (e.g Biochem) in first year to help lessen the load of second year? Just trying to figure out if this would be a good idea. Any insight is greatly appreciated :) Thank you!

If you are taking credit for first year courses, and are physically able to do this within the program rules, I don't see why not! considering second year courses are inherently harder, it will definitely make second year easier; that is if you are prepared to take second year courses in your first year when you are settling in. Personally I think I would take the lighter on first year to get used to the course and content, and then gradually increase workload over the years, but it is all personal preference.

Hate to be that guy, but I managed a 7GPA after 1 full time year of uni (1st year uni). How are my chances looking for an offer? (I got this GPA at another institution-- not Griffith)

Hello, I just finished my first year of biomedicine at La Trobe with a gpa of 7 WAM (88.56) however I have completed 3 subjects on each semester over all for the year (6) subjects. I have received exemption credit for 2 subjects from my previous course which adds up to 8 subjects and gives me a total credit of 120 point would this be counted as a full time study load and if not what are my chances getting accepted to Griffith

Thank you in advance!!

I cannot say that I am 100% confident, but I am pretty sure Griffith will see this as 1 FTE and give you the 7 GPA. The only way you can be 100% sure is if you contact them/qtac directly. Good luck!

Since you are already at La Trobe, why don't you try internal transfer? Griffith is good but be aware the last two years are full fee.

Thank you so much! And I did apply but Someone on here said that La Trobe internal transfer cutoff to Dent was 90+. I’m assuming I won’t get an offer.

I'm seeing so many people post that the cut off last year was 6.875GPA. Does anyone know if rural students have a different GPA requirement? Mine is 6.86 so just under but I'm beginning to think it's going to go up this year with so many students doing online exams and such. The wait is super stressful as there is only a week or so to move once you get an offer and I have kids to enroll in local schools etc. Last I had heard no one knows anyone who applied as a rural to griffith? Do you think because I'm already under I should just remove it from my application?

Definitely don’t remove it. There can be slight movement in the requirements from year to year, and if you’re rural, it’s likely you’ll have a lower cut off (it’s just that we have none reported here pretty routinely unfortunately).

good luck!

Yep, rural students definitely have a reduced entry requirement. As per LMG!, we just don't have many offers reported here because rural students presumably make up a very small part of the Griffith dentistry cohort. I'd be very surprised if you don't land a place offer with 6.86.

Definitely don't remove it. I got into Griffith dent under the rural entry program and my GPA was slightly lower than yours. I know another rural background student who had a GPA of just over 6, which is well under the theoretical minimum for an offer...

So it depends on the year, and nobody knows what effect this year will have in the requirement, but I would be quietly confident about receiving an offer if I were you.

Apparently there is over 500 applicants with a rank of 99.95 this year wow! Does anyone know anything about the Griffith discriminator? (Not my words) that they use to choose? Age? Science background? Etc? This would be interesting to know

In my defence this is what the guy said. Sorry!

Added by Crow: This hasn’t been officially confirmed and is quite unlikely, particularly given ATARs are yet to be released and based off the scores required in previous years. Please take with a grain of salt for the time being.
