Griffith Griffith Medicine: Provisional Entry General Discussion

We don’t believe a gap year affects your chances at provisional entry to Griffith (only UQ). I can’t recall the Griffith pre-reqs but I assume with an ATAR of 99.85 that he didn’t fail any year 12 courses? ETA: did he do English at an appropriate level?
His English isn't the best or that's what I saw drafting some of his work. The way he talked about it gave me the impression that he failed it or at least performed very poorly.

He did either General English or EAL at an appropriate Stage 2 level.

He also said his English was poor
Which state was his Y12?
It's difficult to get 99.85 with poor English marks. For example with SATAC, even with all 20/20 in the other subjects less than 90% marks in English means not enough aggregate marks for 99.85. Similarly for NSW, Vic. So maybe his 99.85 is post-bonus which Griffith doesn't use?

Another possibility is he did his English Stage 2 in Y11 then did all the ATAR subjects in Y12. In this case his 99.85 ATAR aggregate wasn't affected by the low English marks but QTAC overlooked his English prereq in Y11.

He's SA and went to a local public school. I specifically asked him if it was after bonus points and he said no this was his raw ATAR. English doesn't need to count for SACE as its just the best of 5 subjects (4 worth 20 credits, 1 worth 10). For example, I did 7 subjects through SACE and my Physics and Research project grades were excluded from calculations. Maybe I'll ask him for more details

Edit: he says he did English at a Stage 2 level but achieved a C- which is the minimum passing grade. Does Griffith have any minimum English requirements for domestic students? Is there a general grade requirement for interstate applicants?

Afaik only Monash requires 30+/50 for prereqs, elsewhere a Pass is sufficient. If your friend did more than 5 subjects to exclude the English marks then likely QTAC by mistake only looked at his 5 ATAR subjects. Should call QTAC to ask why no Griffith.

Actually I had a closer look at their website. I think the lowest they accept is a C?

I see your point, but I have a different view. See in this link
> Subject prerequisite equivalents

For Qld subjects: C or better, NSW: band 2+, Vic: 25+/50, WA: 50+%, SA: C- or better.

I realise this is a UQ link, but basically it says SA C- is a Pass equivalent to Qld C. Then considering Griffith is a Qld uni the C in your screenshot is a Qld grade therefore SA C- should be equivalent to that C.

(To emphasize this point, if the screenshot's C were meant to be for SA then Griffith should have also included band 2+, 25+/50 etc for the other states in that clause).

Interesting. The guy has these responses after he called the uni in January:

"They didn't say anything they just said I didn't meet my prerequisites"

"I didn't know what else I could do because they said we can't give anymore information"

Would you recommend I ask him to call QTAC to discuss this issue? If you are correct, and he meets the prerequisites by UQ standards, shouldn't he have had a place in Griffith?

No harm your friend calling QTAC but he needs to be very thorough with the reasoning.

Next step I think he should invest a few hundred dollars for a lawyer to write a challenge letter to Griffith, arguing with the details I described above i.e. his SA C- is equivalent to the C Griffith indicates on its webpage. If Griffith concedes they can reserve a place in next year's intake for your friend.

Hello, I have a lot of questions if that's okay (I also posted this on the other page here on MSO)...
If anyone could please help me with any of these that would be amazing.

1. Griffith med's page says that the minimum cut-off ATAR last year was 99.75. Do you predict it will be the same this year as well – could it be higher? Last year, was there anyone with an atar below 99.75 who got in (excluding international students) (especially the GC campus, which I hear is more competitive)?
2. In terms of offer-rounds, I saw here that some people who didn't receive offers on the first round received phone calls as top-ups. Around when are these usually given (how many days after the first offer round)? Are they always phone calls?
3. This year, the NSW applicants' ATARs are being released after Griffith's first offer round. What effect (if any) do you think this could have on applicants from QLD?
4. Do you predict that USC cut-off will be 99.60 as given on the website? Since this course is new and becoming more well-known, do you think that the cut-off will increase a lot this year?
5. How much do the preferences (for the campuses: GC, Nathan, USC) affect chances of getting in?

Thank you so much, and apologies for the number of questions.

1. Yes, it's possible that it could go higher, but typically it has always been between 99.70 and 99.80 for the GC and Nathan campuses (once dropped down to 99.65 but that doesn't happen often). I'd expect it to be in the same range this time round.

2. I don't believe there are always phone calls. Griffith will generally over-offer in the first round in anticipation of a number of people rejecting their offers. Whether this will be affected by the late release of NSW ATARs though is yet to be seen.

3. I imagine Griffith will try and leave a good portion of places leftover for the NSW applicants so I expect the cutoff to be similar for non-NSW applicants as per previous years. Perhaps there could be a slight drop in the cutoff but that will be dependent on what Griffith chooses to do.

4. I expect it will be around 99.60, yes. Remember that most will preference Nathan and GC over USC because they're a year shorter so that cutoff will likely always be a bit below the GC/Nathan cutoffs.

5. They don't.

Wow, thank you so much for such an in depth and helpful response – I really appreciate it.

Sorry, I have another question if that's okay.

Traditionally, have people with ATAR 99.75 been offered first round offers or have many been offered top-up offers?

I recall a year where the first round cutoff for both GC and Nathan was 99.8 but this was prior to the USC campus being added.

I would expect 99.75 to land a first round offer for at least one of GC/Nathan but we don’t know how many spaces Griffith is going to reserve for the post-NSW-ATAR round so the first round cutoff might be higher than usual this year. We will have to see.

I see, thank you very much.

Have there been people who were offered places at USC (first round) who accepted conditionally on QTAC then waited and received top-up offers from GC/Nathan?

If so, we’ve not had them reported here. Top ups in general are pretty rare for Griffith.

So the first round is basically the decider. I see – thank you very much for your response.
Hi. Guys just got an atar in Qld for 99.65. Do I still have a chance for Nathan and GC?. Or USC is my only chance?

I did pretty well ( my opinion) in the JCU interview because I can talk naturally infront of an interview panel and I had genuine answers and not written false answers. This was Back by my strong written application. Which I talked about my leadership positions. Multiple high level Sports teams and alot of volunteering during yr 12.
What are my chances in any of these 4 unis
Qld metro y12 student. Thanks in advance.

If the past few years are anything to go by, USC will be your best bet. It’s impossible to predict JCU. If you’ve had an interview, you’re in with a chance. That’s the best we can do.

Your best bet would be to wait for JCU offers to come out because I don't think being able to talk "naturally" and having genuine answers necessarily sets you apart from the competition. I sure hope the majority of interviewers had genuine answers..

USC is definitely on the cards with 99.65.

Sorry I didn't mean to be arrogant with what I wrote. I thought the interview went well. Should have just said that. I am leaning usc anyway and see if jcu has an offer or not.
