HSFY 2019

Depends on where you stand. One bad paper in HSFY makes such a small impact to your 3 year degree since, if you are applying for Otago med afterwards, they take your best 120 points every year and there is weighting to said years e.g. if you had all A+ in all your papers for a 3 year degree your weighted gpa is 9. Now let's say everything is the same but, of your best 7 im HSFY, one was a C+ which is a gpa of 3. After the calculations and weighting, your weighted GPA for your 3 year degree is 8.9. Aka really not that much of a difference considering that A+ is a 9, and a C+ is a 3 in HSFY relative to Graduate Entry. + You can replace that grade with an 8th paper.

Now, like I said, this depends on your situation. First year doesn't matter when you're applying for Auckland Med provided your average GPA for the 3 years is above 6.0. After that, they rank you on your last 2 years' GPA which has equal weighting. GPA makes up 60%, UCAT makes up 15% and the MMI/Interview makes up 25%, in comparison to Otago's UCAT acting only as a threshold and the rest is purely GPA. Theoretically speaking, you could have a GPA of 6.0 in HSFY, and 2nd and 3rd year both being 9.0 then your weighted GPA in Auckland will be 9.0 whereas it will be 8.5 in Otago.

Tldr: It depends if you think the UCAT and interview can benefit you rather than just purely your GPA.
hey, what do you mean by they take your best 120 points each year? I saw that from 2020 they take up to 120 points from 3rd year papers and the remaining 230 points can be from both 1st and 2nd year papers....so could you take more 2nd year papers (possibly also from summer school) so that they can be counted instead of the bad hsfy papers to boost your application gpa? this is presuming you get A+ in all you 2nd and 3rd year papers

Apologies I was mainly referring to the system now since I'm unsure of what the new changes exactly are. But you're probably right. I was mainly getting the point across that one bad paper is really not too much to panic about.

I did terribly in my papers this semester with C-, B+, B- and an A+. I'm now focused on going for med through grad entry so I'm just wondering how things would fair for me if hypothetically, I got A+ in all my hsfy papers next semester and then in all 200 and 300 level papers? could i also take 9 200 level papers (including soem from summer school) so that they wont have to count my three bad semester 1 hsfy papers?

Yeah I'm unsure on the specifics of the changes are but if what you are saying is true then yeah it's best to pack your degree with as many higher level papers as you can. Decide on what you want to do as a degree later on but make sure that you do end up having the prerequisites for future papers.

cool thanks!

Some amazing sets of results on here, my goodness! Congrats! You guys are killing the game.

This sem I got:
96% in Chem
94% in Cels
94% in Physics
91% in Hubs

Cels I probably should have performed better in and Physics I neglected a little, but all in all they could have been much worse! Hoping to replace that 91% by my second semester marks (I'll be taking Stats as an eighth paper). Not sure if med will happen (at this stage, Dent seems a little more realistic), especially since I won't have any other considerations, but I'll see how next sem goes.

Big love to everyone in Health Sci! Study hard but also take time to enjoy the year (I'm still learning how to take this advice). Mako Road is opening for Mitch James in Dunedin on the 9th of July and tickets are still available. Surely one evening won't hurt the grades too much ;)

Has anyone done Stats or Maori before for their 8th paper in HSFY, could you please give me a run down of the papers?
Thanks

Amazing result! I would definitely aim for med if I were you haha but I heard from many people that dent is very interesting once you start studying so whatever you decide to study hope everything goes well!

So many good grades.. is it the usual case for every year..? I'm now not so confident at all. I feel like the cut-off will go up so high this year...

Yeah some of the grades coming through are amazing. Essentially, we don't know what will happen this year with the change with the UCAT. Just another friendly reminder though that the scores posted aren't typical and are not a representative sample of how everyone is doing. Stay in your own lane, make sure you're working as hard and as smart as you can, and hope for the best. :)

Anyone have insight on COMP111 and STAT115 as optional 8th papers? Workload, difficulty etc. ?

I've been told STATS is pretty light, as in (hopefully) a pretty easy A+, with plussage and a MCQ only final, this is the paper I'll be taking, not too sure about COMP111 sorry.

Hey guys,

I enrolled for MART112 as an optional paper to replace my 82% CELS191 grade. I chose marketing because it sounded really interesting, has anyone done it before? I'm also considering dentistry if I don't get into med. So far I'm still optimistic in bumping my 89% average grade (fingers crossed).

Maori eighth paper vs stats? dont know which one to choose
Can anyone give me some insight into what these papers are like?

Hi,

Does anyone know when does offer for dentistry interview comes out? On the website, it says that the interview will be held on 8th and 9th of October but the offer should come out before right?

I just had a look back to my year's MSO HSFY post archives - and I can't confirm what date interviews were held in 2011, but the offers came out on 4th of October (2011). I see the "dent interview" discussion didn't last many days though, so presumably around the same early-October dates.

Someone who has done HSFY more recently than myself (cos I'm like, a dinosaur now) can probably give a better idea of how it has been in the last couple of years; but there is a possibility of getting the dent interview offer only a few days before the interview.

Yes, it's 3am right now and I'm on MSO 🤣 but I start work tomorrow at 3am, so I'm just getting into the right sleep schedule.

Hey, I think dentistry interview offers are released upon Otago receiving our UCAT results (in late September) and determining the 300 applicants that have achieved the required threshold.

Hi, I wasn't sure which thread to ask about this. I'm applying for post-graduate medicine at the end of this year and I've calculated that I'll have ~an 8.625 weighted GPA after semester 2 this year assuming it goes well. Is this a good enough weighted GPA to get into medicine at Otago? Also can someone please explain how the UCAT thresholds work? If I were to not meet the thresholds would that mean that my application is invalid and I have no chance at Otago entry? I only got a 70th percentile in the UMAT when I did it 2 years ago and I honestly hate these kind of tests.
