Does anybody know if the different ways that you could apply to be rural have different weightings in terms of selection?

I would say no. Those who apply under rural would be all lumped together and ordered by GPA. The top x people would get an offer.
The pathway is about increasing rural health professionals. I doubt the different pathways have any effect on the likelihood of someone working in a rural community.

Does anyone have any idea why they took the lowest number of students from general category in 2019 please? Please see Official information below. I can maori, pacific have increased to the highest number in 2019 and also rural!
Looks like the places of general category were given to those category. In my opinion this is why we had the highest cut off of GPA for general category (grad &FY)

Do you guys think they will cut down more from the general category because they have introduced two new sub categories this year (socio economic and refugee)?

Official information:
Total number of applicants and subsequent enrolments to University of Otago professional Health Sciences programmes, 2014-2019 (- Subsequent enrolments are shown in brackets. )

Year- Māori -Pacific - Rural General International
2019- 92 (56) -55 (28) -111 (53) -771 (145) -42 (8)
2018 -83 (54) -53 (21) -125 (54) -699 (151) - (10)
2017 -99 (59) -38 (18) -120 (46) -779 (159) - (10)
2016 -88 (47)- 46 (22) -108 (55) - 719 (158) -29 (7)
2015 -77 (45) -43 (10) -126 (55) -710 (171) -32 (11)
2014 -72 (39)- 31 (15) -115 (50) -768 (162)- 63 (18)

The total number of places at Otago is 282 for 2020 as per website as as last year.

Is there any data showing how many of those general places went to HSFY and graduate respectively? Would be interesting to see

You kind of answered your own question already. There were less general applicants since they took more applicants under sub categories.

They could lower even more and that is plausible yes.

Number of applicants are not less in the general category. It is 771 last year but they took 145 from that compared to 699 applicant and 151 successful.
hope they could create more places for those sub categories rather than taking out from General.
Maori pacific sub categories GPAs are sooo low..

I dont think they can magically create more places for sub categories without chopping of some from general category, as the maximum 282 places has stayed constant over the years.

In 2018, there was slightly less pacific students applying under that sub category yet the number of places offered (compared to 2019) was much much lower. It could potentially mean that more pacific students were meeting the required thresholds in 2019 than compared to 2018.

Therefore the conclusion, you could possibly get from all of this, is that there is no fixed amount of seats allocated for each sub category, it just depends on the cohort.

Yes we've known this for a while, that if you're under MAPAS pathway and you meet the requirement / grade threshold you get in with no cap on places.

I don't think it was a deliberate reduction of general category as much as a chance fluctuation in the numbers of the Pacific category. I believe the general category is just what's left over after the sub-categories.
