Got an offer off the dentistry waitlist this morning (I was in the top 5) with an average of 89.45% so so happy!! Good luck to all those left on the waitlist! 😊

Congrats and I'll see you l8r in the year! Feel free to join the "Otago Dentistry Class of 2023" and "NZDSA 2020" pages for any updates made later on.

Just been told I’m now in the top 5 places for the dentistry waitlist, do u think I’ll get in from this close to the course starting or is it unlikely

Offers can come out til like 2 weeks into the sem so there is a possibility.
A colleague of mine got into otago med in orientation week as some decide that's not what they want to do so don't lose hope. Up unitl you get the rejection letter, anything can happen.

Yes, it's definitely possible - even a week or so after the course starting, so don't lose hope!

On the other hand, you do need to be enrolled in a backup course of choice, rather than banking everything on the wait list, so if you (or anyone else) haven't done so already, you'll need to do so ASAP.

Hey squad. In preparation for tutoring HUBS this year, can anyone let me know whether the content and structure of the 2019 HUBS191 and HUBS192 exam was similar to the previous few years?

Cheers! And once again, congrats to everyone for getting through the year. Regardless of your grades, it is an accomplishment to make it through the course.

Quite a few changes... for one, they reduced certain chapters compared to recent years (Endocrine is now only 5 lectures, Immune is 6 lectures) and removed some content (e.g. fractures and bursae for musculoskeletal).

They also added in a new module called Biostatistics to HUBS191, which most people were unprepared for (10 MCQs in the final)

Exam structure has also changed. 90 MCQs followed by 4 mini-essays of 7-8 marks each (total 30 marks). They have removed "fill-in-the-blanks" short answer questions from previous years.

Thanks for the info! Were these biostats questions similar to those in STAT115, or the PUBH192 sort of questions about bias and confounding? Just trying to grasp whether these MCQs are going to be more about definitions and theory, vs applying these theories to a specific given study or excerpt.

Hi! I took both HUBS and STAT last year, for sure more similar to STAT115. They were very basic, and involved concepts such as spread of a distribution decreasing with increased sample size. Most questions we were presented with a small scenario and had to pick the best answer based on concepts.

Nope, it is more conceptual based (e.g. sampling, confidence intervals, taking a representative sample, bias types, and etc.

Thanks for that! On a different note, were the essay questions from 191 and 192 similar to previous years? Still waiting on the 2019 exam to be released on the library page but trying to plan tutorials for the year.

Ah yes, the lesser known human body system of statistics.

My second favourite body system behind calculus.

Yup the essay questions were very similar, generally 2 worth 8 marks and 2 worth 7 marks :)

Yes, pretty much the same.

What’s the lowest average that someone’s gotten, to get a direct offer from medicine this year, without having to wait on the wait list
