What happened with the grad schools is GU has set up a new med school at Sunshine Coast with 50 places. These are made up of 35 places UQ relinquished (since UQ discontinued using the clinical unit at SC Hospital), plus 15 places in a swap deal with UoM/Monash/Wollongong. So we are talking about ~5 fewer CSP places each at these 3 schools, I don't think that would have made a big difference to their cutoffs

Unrelated to that swap deal, I noticed from last year JCU cut domestic intake from 170 down to 150 while increasing int'l intake by that 20. I hope it won't be a fashionable trend for the undergrad schools.

Previously the interviewees estimate was 320-350 based on 8 MMI stations * 2 circuits * 4 sessions/day * 4 days (+1 for interstate). However we heard recently at WSU it's actually 10 interviewees per circuit so (10*2*4*5) = 400 likely for this year as well as past years.

EtA: On second thought previous years may have been 400 invites but well under actual since many interstate applicants would skip the interview in Jan (after having received a home state offer) and their slots would not have been topped up. This year is likely to be closer to 400 actual since any empty slots including interstate ones will be topped up.

If you mean last year, there was a S1+S2=129 (with S3 around 80s iirc) who got an invite first up but a couple of 131s & 130s with S3 around 50s didn't. It was why I figured the cutoff formula was close to S1+S2+ 0.1*S3.

For this year see the collated data thread, atm it stands at S1+S2=131. Btw non-standards should have the same cutoff as for school leavers.
 
Is anyone aware of how WSU selects their place offers? Is it based 100% on the interview (i.e. Academic/UMAT is not regarded), or does UMAT get taken into consideration as well? If so, what proportion is based on UMAT, 1/3?

Has this been confirmed anywhere or is it just speculation? Because on the website it says place offers are based on interview and UMAT, with a greater emphasis on interview. Thank you!

according to this [Undergrad] - (2018 Updated) Med schools Selection Criteria Y12s & Non-standards it looks like it's based 100% on interview with UMAT as the tie breaker. I think maybe a moderator could explain what the uni means hopefully.

The website says that^ but we have heard from several sources, including WSU staff at the interviews, it's 100% on the interview with UMAT as tiebreak where needed.
 
A member has PM'ed me asking about this. Their UMAT (67,70,72) should be well over the WSU cutoff for an invite but they have not received one. Possible reason is they didn't get the ATAR 95.5 last year and this year's GPA is not available until November, but we thought WSU wouldn't check this until the place-offer stage right?

They confirm they have checked the Spam/Promotions folders and did submit a direct application to WSU but didn't receive a receipt. Is that a possible cause?

If they submitted a direct application and filled everything correctly then it could be that WSU now checks if you meet the academic thresholds before interview. For yr 12s this is N/A because they do not have their ATARs but non-standard do. Was their GPA at the time of application sufficient?

Problem with this^ is, if their GPA will be 6.1+ by end of Nov making them eligible there won't be time for WSU to give them an interview.
So WSU should give an invite regardless then reject at place-offer stage if necessary.

One possible explanation is that WSU used the GPA they have as of now. It is possible that they are moving towards a post-grad like system whereby you have to meet the GPA cut off prior to the interview.

The only other explanations are that they haven't checked off rurality or GWS, or they didn't do a direct application or submit it properly.

Is it possible for them to call WSU and see if there was an error on some end... since they may do top up offers at the end if this was an error on WSUs part maybe they can get wait listed?

Are they studying full time? WSU (last year at least) told me that they could only consider GPA upon completion of 8 subjects. I seem to remember that last year I didn't receive a receipt for my application, but it turned out they did have it.

I can't imagine that WSU, being a uni that accepts a large amount of non-standards, would wait until university results are released in November to assess GPA. As you said, I think it would make more sense to conduct interviews and then reject people at the place-offer stage.

At this point I think the best this person can do has already been suggested - contact the medical school to find out if there has been a mistake and hope to be wait-listed. It seems most likely that either the application wasn't received or there has been an error.

Update: the member called Penny at WSU who checked with the "outside source handling admissions", turned out the direct application is missing. They are now looking for proof one was submitted.

For general info w.r.t to the comment above, we have seen in the past if it is due to an error on the school's part they can quickly issue an invite not having to wait until the top-up round.
