JMP JMP: General Entry Discussion

Why? There was a chart showing the high ATARs 98+ statistically are more prone to be found unsuitable by JMP's PQA, but that's unrelated to UCAT %ile.

Oh - I am mistaken if this is the case - I thought it was high UCAT scorers. Although I don't think it would be a stretch to say that high ATAR scorers are likely to be the high UMAT/UCAT scorers - although without any real data and correlation/regression analysis we can't be sure.

I was referring to the article/paper which was published based on participants with a higher UMAT percentile not performing as well as people with lower scores. I know it was an older paper but it was more to develop some discussion.

Usually due to the stigma that students who are extremely bright often lack some of the social and emotional intelligences.

I think that was ATAR not UMAT.

Playing the devil's advocate here, but it could be argued that UCAT and ATAR do exhibit some sort of correlation - how strong it is I don't know but I'm 99% sure it's a positive one. By extension then, high UCATs tend to have high ATARs, which have a greater tendency to be found unsuitable by the PQA.

↑UCAT → ↑ATAR → ↓PQA suitability

Ha literally what i said - I don't think it's a stretch to assume the both are highly related (based on the common ATAR's we see for UCAT scorers...)

The data is incredibly skewed already if you're trying to do this. I feel like the only thing you could comfortably infer (without in depth analysis) would be that people with 'high' ATARs are more likely to sit UMAT/UCAT to start with...

Yeah - but that's like saying those sitting UCAT are more likely to be in or having finished year 12.

Statistics mean nothing to the individual so I'm not saying just because you scored amazingly you are destined to interview bad otherwise universities would know this and would have likely introduced methods to interview lower scoring candidates if they thought they would be better doctors.

The PQA PowerPoint used TER data, I sought clarification on it and the data was pre 2000. It was used in the presentation to show the importance of cognitive tests for interview invites over claiming that 'the smarter you are, the less socially and emotional intelligent you may be'.

That is why it is introduced the earlier section of the presentation prior to the slide 'Paradigm shift'. It is unfortunate that the presentation that not include any statistical use of the UMAT within it.

I think the presentation was a plug or explanation for the inclusion of PQA into JMP's interview process. UMAT had been in use by JMP for interview selection since 1991, PQA was introduced in 2012. The author is one of the PQA's pioneers.

Regardless, it doesn't change the stats that a larger proportion of high TER/ATAR students have been found unsuitable by the interview, which is still a substantial part of JMP's selection process.

definitely just shoot them an email jmp is historically quite helpful with moving interviews and i moved my jmp interview this year with no issues at all (was also due to exams)

Thanks for letting me know!! Also - how long did they take to get back to you?
Fingers crossed they'll let me reschedule.

Hi Can someone give some advice to find accommodation for 2 nights at Armidale. Flying to Armidale by myself and I need to catch a bus to where I stay and then go to the interview next day and go to the airport next day after the interview. Prefer a place where I can access public transport and a accommodation place where I can get take away food. Not sure whether there is public transport but taxis are expensive. Do they have Uber?thanks.

Hi, when will you be in Armidale? Happy to give you a hand getting around if you need? (I'm a first year med student here at the moment)

For anyone who previously requested for a JMP interview date change - how long did it take for them to get back to you?

Slightly anxious whilst waiting for reply hahahah

Hey, I'm booked a room at a place called 'Western Studio Appartments' for one night. It was pretty cheap ($86).

Hi. I read on this thread that UCAT score is now irrelevant once you get an interview invite. So on what basis do you get an offer into med by JMP? Is it 100% just interview score, like that giant table said? Where would GPA come into it?

ATAR/GPA is a hurdle at JMP not counted into the final ranking for place offers. At the offer stage if anyone is below the hurdle they basically won't even get on the ranking list.

Thank you for replying. I'm so sorry for the dumb question but what do you mean by hurdle? So they use your GPA as a hurdle and if you're above that hurdle, then they rank you according to your interview score and then give offers out?

Exactly that. Once you're above the hurdle GPA (i.e. minimum GPA) it doesn't matter how high or low your GPA is, you're only ranked based on the interview performance.
