Monash Monash Medicine: General Entry Discussion

I'm confused - since ALL offers come out on January 15 anyway (or thereabouts, it changes every year), after the conclusion of both interview rounds, why do you need two interview rounds in the first place? Wouldn't 1 held in early January be more straightforward?
This is effectively what JCU does - interviews one round based on predicted ATAR and another based on actual ATAR. I assume it is mainly done because it's not possible to fit all of those interviewees into the second round, but it works much better for them because the predicted ATARs are usually pretty close to the actual ATARs. Monash is doing the same except they are not using predicted ATAR, therefore a whole bunch of first round interviewees could hypothetically be a waste of their time as I mentioned above.

seeing as interstates are the final round of monash interviews, does that mean that ATARs will be taken into account (instead of solely UCAT) when sending out interstate interview invites?

You can be pretty confident they will be - it has always been the case.

Get a 99.95 and a 99th percentile to even have a shot at an interview hahahaha

Seems like a waste of Monash’s time tbh - I’ve never understood why universities e.g. Adelaide and Flinders interview applicants on the basis of UCAT/GAMSAT alone, when they consider ATAR/GPA in the final ranking. It sets them up for interviewing a bunch of people who won’t even be eligible in the end due to their ATAR/GPA being too low. Waste of the interviewer’s time and waste of the applicant’s time as well.

As much as I agree with this in terms of saving interviewers and interviewees precious time and potentially travel expenses as well, the logistics of not doing this historically have often resulted in very late offers and/or unfilled places. It would make a lot more sense if there was a central offers system (like GEMSAS but for undergraduates) as the issues in regards to having to interview early all stem from the high rate of declines from multiple offer candidates who inevitably apply to every possible medical school in every state.

Howdy everyone, Monash has (ostensibly, and from my observations) yet again changed their basis for undergrad interview selection. In the same place on their website where they stated that early interview invites based on UCAT only would be sent out, it now says this:
[MedStudentsOnline.com.au] Monash Medicine: General Entry Discussion
So the UCAT-based interview invite info has been removed from that page. Don't know what this might mean, and I can't find any other info on their website that states that there will be interview invites sent based on UCAT only. However, on their important dates page (last updated May 2020) it says this:
[MedStudentsOnline.com.au] Monash Medicine: General Entry Discussion
So interviews are apparently still going to occur mid-December but I'm not sure what they will be based on.

Since this is before Vic ATAR release Monash could do a UNSW clone - ask your school to directly provide a predicted ATAR on your behalf.

That said, given all the study disruptions this year I'm not sure schools will be keen to do a predicted.

They must’ve read my thoughts on that selection criteria on MSO and come to their senses ;)

Could this simply be the case that the universities have access to the finalised year 12 results of the applicants before they are released to the applicants themselves? Maybe they’ll still be able to base it off the actual ATARs if so.

The unis/schools do get access to ATAR results earlier than the students, but I think only a few days. Monash is talking about mid-Dec interviews vs Vic ATAR release end of Dec. Not to mention they need to give these interviewees some notice i.e. invites sent early Dec.

monash has updated that they will be running interviews most likely on zoom, with 6 stations instead- do you think difficulty of interview questions / ucat cutoff could be affected by this??
Each station will be more important to score well on because you’ll have less opportunity to make up for a bad station. I can’t see how this would have an impact on the UCAT cutoff, as presumably the same number of candidates will be interviewed.

Monash is still doing interviews based solely on UCAT

Nothing has changed this is what I found just then.

"VTAC’s confirmation that year 12 results will now be released on 30 December 2020, has meant that we have made some changes to our MMI interview process for 2021 entry in order to meet the VTAC selection round on 14 January 2021. Most interviews will now be held in mid December 2020 and selection for these interviews will be based on a ranking of applicants’ UCAT test scores only."

Also something interesting to note is they may possible use SJT as they said this:

"Applicants are assessed based only on their raw scores (not percentiles) and all 5 sections of the test are taken into account."

Apparently (content removed) got confirmation that the first round of Monash interviews (based purely on UCAT) is for all students, ie interstate, rural, and Vic

Apparently the director of a UCAT prep company got confirmation that the first round of Monash interviews (based purely on UCAT) is for all students, ie interstate, rural, and Vic
This contradicts the above updated info on their website, though, does it not?

that's what i was thinking as well, although this person also works at Monash so both sides do have credibility - not too sure what to think hahaha

Welp, looks like I'll be saying goodbye to Monash based off my SJT score!

Anyways, interesting how they said MOST interviews will be based solely off of UCAT... this might mean that those with a slightly lower but still competitive UCAT score will need a pretty high ATAR to compensate as not many will be invited for interviews using the ATAR + UCAT combo, thus increasing the competitiveness for these spots.

What makes you say that? Did they say they’re taking SJT into account?
