Non-standard Medicine Entry

They used to have it so the Health Professional Major of the Bachelor of Biomed Science was secured an interview at the rural UCAT score... but they said they are restructuring it so that major will be removed - i am unsure if they are replacing it
From my friends experiences with UON - they seem to be cutting back HARD on the avaliability of many courses... my suspicion is they have removed majors in the BBiomedSci in a way of cutting back the amount of courses they have to offer, and probably scrapping the pathway with it. From what Sue said in that email, it didnt seem too popular anyways
eta: yeah... looking at the 2021 program plan and the biomedsci website on uon - they seem to remove all reference to majors in the program. instead just offering a massive list of 'directed' courses for you to work it out yourself. So unless they have decided to extend the program to the entire degree which i find unlikely... i doubt it still exists.
Given that the JMP Admissions office hasnt heard anything of the change, its a great example on how flimsy these lateral programs are - and how people should not pick these degrees based off a chance to get into medicine.

Yep, I believe so! ETA: I think it’s been mentioned in the JMP thread, perhaps by dotwingz? ETA2: and you can’t just be any old UoN student, I don’t think. It was for a specific course of study (BMedSci is mentioned in the thread though I’m not 100% sure about that). ETA3: It’s BBioMedSci ETA4...

Hi, I was wondering if it's possible to transfer through non standard to UNSW if you are doing the bmedsci at USC for the provisional Griffith doctor of medicine, I remember that it's not possible from bond to UNSW but I'm not sure if it's the same for this because it's not technically med yet? Any help would be appreciated

I understand even with a competitive Gamsat score, the likelihood of any offers would be slim and in this case, I have applied for a number of undergrad courses. Would it best to focus on an undergrad degree, transferring mid-degree & assuming a high GPA is maintained or pursue entry to select school through a masters? If the later, is there information available as to which school's accept master's?

Yes, we believe this is possible because, as you’ve rightly mentioned, it’s not a medical degree. We believe you could use your GPA to apply to all non-standard unis.
Did you complete the nursing degree (and if so, which year did you complete it)? Are you rural, or from an indigenous background (both are relevant for various pathways you can access)? Have you done any tertiary education since your nursing degree (certificates or diplomas)?

Hi, No I had not completed the Nursing degree, only the first year, dropping out thereafter due to health reasons. My GPA is calculated from my last degree, a Bachelor of Construction Management. I'm neither rural or from an indigenous background. Upon reading further this afternoon, I feel my best option may be begin another undergrad, perhaps in Nursing or the likes, try for a credit transfer and venture down the non-standard pathway. Would you agree?
Most recognition of prior learning (RLP) has a limit on how recent the study must be (the max I’ve seen is 7 years) so you’re unlikely to be eligible for a credit transfer.
I think your best option is to start a degree, but it’s also important to do this degree for its own merits and for your own interest in the career it may bring given there are still no guarantees in place that you’ll be successful. If Nursing is a future you could also see for yourself, then yep, I’d think that’s a pretty good option to launch a non-standard entry application from.
That said, you’re already eligible for JMP just based on what you’ve already achieved. So it would also be possible to do UCAT alone next year, but it would definitely limit your options

Just wondering if I apply for undergrad med this year, how would my GPA be calculated?. I did 2 years of physiotherapy at WSU with a GPA of 6.5 and I am starting optometry at UNSW this year. I am assuming that they will take only my unsw wam for first year? Thanks!

JMP & WSU do not span GPA across different study programs, they use only the most recent one provided it's at least one semester for WSU and 1 year FTE (by end of year) for JMP. So for example if you will have 1 year FTE JMP will use your Optom GPA, if <1 FTE it's Physio GPA.
I remember seeing somewhere UNSW says they take all tertiary studies into consideration so likely the 3 years are combined. Not sure about JCU.

You can do any degree you like to earn the GPA to apply, but you're best off doing a degree that a) you enjoy, because you'll work harder at it and likely get better marks; and b) has decent career prospects on its own if med applications don't proceed.
While some of the skills from (say) nursing are useful for new med students, you're not expected to have health science knowledge and there's plenty of non-standards with backgrounds in arts, business, IT, law, anything. The med school will teach the health stuff to you when you start.

For those who sat the UCAT alongside uni, how did you balance both of them? Is it similar to balancing yr12 and UCAT, or is it more tough with uni?
Time management in uni is more self driven. There’s less face to face work than school, but it’s expected that you study more outside of lecture/tutorials/etc
In that sense it’s way easier to organise time for UCAT preparation around uni than in year 12, because it’s completely up to you to plan it in the first place.

Hi, so I'm going to be starting a Medical Science degree this year and I wish to go via Non-standard degree. I know that JCU WSU JMP UNSW offers this pathway (please correct me if I missed any). I was wondering if you can apply for credits and if the course would still be six years since I completed a year in medical science ?
At JCU, yes (but apparently it’s rare to have them approved). At the other three, no. Bond is also available to you and is also a no.
It’s therefore advisable not to do Med Sci as it confers no benefit and isn’t a particularly useful degree, long term, unless you’re keen on a PhD at some point. Have you had a think about other possibilities? Or are you set on Med Sci?

Hi, I intend to start a BPsych at USyd while studying for the UCAT. Would it make more sense to take on 18 units of uni work instead of 24 units this year while I attempt the UCAT? This would mean I've done exactly 75% of my recommended first year units. I think USyd still regards 18/24 units a full time load, but I wouldn't want to jeopardise my chances at JMP etc.
