Non-standard Medicine Entry

Hey MSO. Does anyone know what UCAT ballpark is needed for an interview at Uni Adelaide Medicine and Dentistry as a non-standard tertiary transfer student? Based on grades, mocks and my current academic performance I am expecting to achieve a GPA between 6.5 - 7.0 and a low UCAT around 2600. Will I be in with a good chance for an interview given that Adelaide weighs grades more than the UCAT? Also, I am currently at Adelaide not studying a Health and Medical Science degree, does this in any way disadvantage me or elevate the requirements of a tertiary transfer? I can still apply for transfer in my current degree but won't be included in the quota of the minimum 10 students that are accepted from Health and Medical Science.

We only get a small amount of TT data each year so it’s hard to say. That GPA would be competitive. That UCAT, less so. Take a look at the collated data offers threads of the past few years for a clearer idea.

Thank you! Yes, I have just started UCAT preparation and starting off quite poorly. I am doing well in VR and DM but am really struggling in the areas of quantitative reasoning and abstract reasoning. Is the interview for Adelaide based solely on UCAT score?

I was also considering applying for La Trobe Dentistry as a non-standard. Do you know what the GPA cutoff has been in recent years? If I have researched correctly, they only consider GPA and not a UCAT, which would work in my favour.

Hi guys, I've been working as a rural veterinarian for a couple years and now I'm thinking of switching to human medicine. What pathways do I have? Does living in a rural area for a couple years grant me any bonus points? Thanks.

PagingDR would be a better forum for your questions given it has a more post graduate focus.
Rural living bonus is like 10 culminatively or 5 years consecutively.

Adding to Deboza's reply - apart from GAMSAT graduate entry you can also sit UCAT and apply to JMP (if your Vet degree GPA 4.3+), WSU (GPA 5.5+ iirc), Curtin (GPA 6.0+), UNSW (GPA 6.5+). But UCAT registration has closed for this year, have to do next year for 2025 med entry.

One option without UCAT is JCU, you need GPA 6ish+ and a good written application in which you elaborate on your 2-year rural living to align with JCU's rural preferences.

I’m a Clinical Psychologist now studying Med and can answer any questions you have about that pathway! Psychology
I’m so sorry that this reply comes so late after your original comment… I’m doing Clin Psych at the moment and would love to know what the journey looked like from a clin psych to studying med. Are you aware if we are able to get credit towards psychiatry considering our 8 years of previous study.

Hey, I'm a current high school student going for HSFY in otago or biomed in auckland for first year. When I apply for med for 2nd year, I'm thinking of applying to aussie med schools as well.
Which universities accept these case as non-school leavers for undergraduate med??

Good place to start. Also have a read through this thread. Lots of useful info.

Hey, Im a current gap year student and am thinking about applying to medical schools in Queensland via QTAC. I had applied last year but was unsuccessful. Do I use my qtac account from last year or do I have to make a new one?

I’m not sure, but keep in mind you’re not eligible for UQ or its affiliates.

hi - I'm a year 12 student where for all purposes of this question, say I have a ucat of 2900 and atar of 99.80 (my predicteds right now - my ucat is in 5 days and unlikely 3100+ at all).

Not exactly bursting with confidence - so I've looked into post-yr12 med options - after reading the heated discussion on gap years thread (under interviews sub-forum) and A1 's guide, I think I will take a undergraduate course instead of gap year (likely actuarial studies unsw) - but I'm confused as to which Unis will accept based off my UCAT retry and ATAR/gpa because of conflicting info from this forum and uni websites.

e.g. unsw med entry 'If you’re a domestic student who is studying or has studied at an Australian medical school, you’re not able to apply as a commencing student.' (Does that only apply to the medical faculty from other unis?)

Secondly, I'm also curious as to which pathway usually has the highest probability of successful entrance into just any med: 1. attempting 1st year non-standard - 2. internal streams like bmed sci for UNSW 3. just retry ucat as gap-year school leaver 4. grind for post-grad thru GAMSAT and other? How many people are accepted with each type of entrance?

I'm not too educated on the different pathways and stuff - haven't done enough research. I think though lots of ucat-failed y12s like me are similarly confused on all the non-school leaver paths to med (maybe mso can make an in-depth guide on non-direct entry to med for us ambitious strugglers)

I'd love any help from anyone! (p.s. plz plz plz correct me if i've misunderstood anything!) thanks in advance!

See in this table which med schools you can apply as non-standard
> [Undergrad] - (2023 Updated) Med schools Selection Criteria Y12s & Non-standards

The UNSW's exclusion only applies to uni students who are already in an Australian med course elsewhere. Reason is UNSW doesn't want to do a disservice to other med schools in taking students midway out of their quota-controlled cohorts.

It's complicated to explain in detail, I will keep it brief. To maximise your chance of sucess:
(1) Try to get into med from Year12.
(2) If you have a high-99s ATAR but failed (1) due to low UCAT *and* you're positive you can improve the UCAT, you might want to take a gap year to repeat (1). Otherwise DON'T.
(3) Apply non-standard in Year1 and/or Year2 uni. Disadvantage of (3) vs (2) is you're limited to only 4-5 schools.
(4) If still not in by this stage, go GAMSAT.

The internal transfer pathway gives a small additional chance on top of (3). But at the expense of possibly being restricted to certain undergrad courses, not free choice like non-standard.

I hope you can digest this, as said it's hard to explain all the nuances. Good luck.

Hey guys, I've just completed the UCAT in the last few days and I got a 3060, which I'm guessing is a 91-93%ile mark. My individual scores for each section were VR: 680, DM:700, QR:800, AR:880. This is my 3rd attempt and finally getting a 90th %ile mark so I'm very proud of my effort. However, I applied last year with a 2800 UCAT (obvs rejected), and in the email it said the cut off mark was a 3100 for applicants. I was quite hopeful to achieve that mark at least, but unfortunately fell just a bit short which is stressing me out a bit. I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Commerce (yes I hate it dw ahaah), and I have a 6.0 GPA, so I don't think the GPA is an issue. What do you guys think are my chances are for JMP or anywhere in Australia with my current marks. Thanks for any help guys!!

Unfortunately despite your UCAT improvements it doesn't look enough for the schools accepting non-standards UNSW, WSU, JMP.

One school you may have some chance is JCU. Start working on your written application.

Being your 3rd attempt does that mean you will complete the BBus/Comm this year? If so you may have some chance at Curtin. Good luck.

I think Notre dame provisional entry in to med (starting from 2024) accepts non standard applicants although there seems to be some conditions for it and it sounds pretty ambiguous

Very interesting, I could have sworn when it first came out it was only available for school leavers.

Its a nice surprise if it opens up another potential thing to apply to though.

Thank you

As mentioned before, this is the PRIORITY PATHWAY and NOT the ASSURED PATHWAY.
See the following link as it explains the differences: Pathways to medicine

Hi,
I'm a year 12 student, who desperately want to get into med however I'm worried that my ATAR and UCAT might not be high enough for me to get straight into medicine (as I moved to Australia from a non-English speaking background)

I did attend the Gateway Program of UNSW and got advices to do other degree such as Bachelor of medical science then later resist the UCAT and apply into Doctor of medicine.

I also heard that you need to be the top of your class in order to do this pathways, can someone please explain this pathway in more detailed and whether I should study this course or should I study Bachelor of Science, sit the Gamsat and apply to post-grad medicine instead.

Thank you so much in advanced
