Non-standard Medicine Entry

What are/is there any particular disadvantage within the application process of applying to JMP/WSU as an interstate (QLD) non-standard applicant? Higher UCAT cutoff? interstate quota's?
JPM seems to favour NSW locals (though it favours GWS and rural most), but I don’t think JMP does.

Non-standard applicants to both tend to be advantaged over school leavers due to the reliance on interview performance and this tending to skew towards applicants with more life-experience

Apart from JMP you should be eligible for WSU as well. I remember reading somewhere WSU will use the highest of your (multiple) GPAs or ATAR which helps you qualify, so in your case either the 6.5 or ATAR if it was 95.5+.

I believe UNSW counts all uni studies together, unlikely to have a chance with GPA less than 6.5.
Will JMP also use highest of multiple GPAs?

JMP uses the latest of any 1+FTE GPA.
So, if latest GPA is say 0.75FTE JMP uses the previous GPA, and if the previous GPA is also less than 1FTE JMP goes all the way back to ATAR.

That said JMP requires just 4.7-4.8 hurdle, it's seldom an obstacle.

AAhh got it. Since Im at UNSW i dont think my third trimester will go through in time as many UNSW students had this issue last year. Im assuming they will just take my 6.5 from last year

Just wanted to ask:

Does anyone have any guesses of what a 95% percentile UCAT score will be this year. I've forgotten what is what last year but probably 20-30 more? Sorry if this has been said elsewhere.

Idk if its been asked already, but does anyone know the lowest ucat %ile that got an interview for UNSW gateway med last year? Anyone know how many people even get offered an interview out of the total application pool?

Which unis are now allowing non-stanadrd entry for Med? I am in my first year of bachelors, got a UCAT Score of 3120 and GPA of 6.8 in my first semester. If I get the same GPA next semester too do I have a chance for non-standard entry interview in any of the Univerisities?

MY VR Scoe is 800

Pretty new to this whole non-standard application process, so I have a couple questions. Sorry if they've already been answered!
- Does UAC already have your IB/ATAR from your year of graduation or do you need to provide documentation/take action for them to receive the transcript again?
- How does UAC get your GPA? I'm assuming they reach out to your university? Is there anything you have to do?

Any other info/explanation about the admin stuff would be super helpful! TIA

Yep, UAC have (or gain where needed) access to all this info :)

Good luck!

Someone who goes to usyd told me their friend doing the Bachelor of Applied Science (Diagnostic Radiography) was able to transfer into the medicine Bsc and MD program through getting a high enough WAM and being on some waitlist, till someone dropped out of the course and she was able to transfer in. I've never heard of this, is anyone able to clarify if this is true.

Hmm, nope. Thats the first I’ve heard of such a thing and I’ve been heavily involved in MSO since 2016. But I’m definitely not saying my knowledge is definitive (and we don’t get ~heaps of USyd info here) so if anyone else can weigh in…

Hi everyone I would really appreciate some advice and help here. I am a first year uni student in NSW in a non medical degree but looking to go into medicine asap in any state or school. I graduated last year with a 99.95 ATAR but do not have a UCAT. What are my options from here?

Thank you

With no UCAT, JCU and Bond are your only immediate options, though your GPA will also come into play.

Hi thank you for your help! I have heard Griffith and Sunshine Coast also do not need ucat and is straight ATAR entry? Would I be eligible for those? I imagine a 6.5 GPA would be competitive

Also if I sit the UCAT next year what would my options look like? Does having started another uni degree hinder my chances?

Really appreciate the help and guidance

I suggest you do a little more research on options yourself. Most of the uni pages have good info and we have heaps here.

For example, you originally posted your question in the ‘gap year’ thread (I’ve since moved it), but you’re not a gap year applicant if you’re a “first year uni student”, you’re a non-standard applicant.

You’re limited to the unis that accept non-standard applicants, so reading through this thread would be a good first place to start.

Hi everyone,
Please advise,
I am a first-year uni student- 1st semester 6.5 GPA , UCAT 3400 (VR 810). My ATAR was 97.5 in 2023. I am trying my best to achieve the same GPA in 2nd semester as well, but I've dropped one subject in 2nd semester due to heavy workload. Please advise my chances as a non-standard applicant (both Med/Dent). VIC-non rural. Thanks

I’d imagine you’d land interview invites at JMP and JPM. I have a feeling that your less than 1FTE GPA will mean it doesn’t translate well enough for UNSW and your ATAR won’t compensate. JCU is also worth an application but is always an unknown entity. I’m not sure how your less than 1FTE works for Bond and your ATAR is probably on the low side for them, too. If you’re doing a QTAC application for JCU, would definitely be worth it if you have space.

I have no idea for Dent, sorry.

FYI my credentials are that I work at USYD specifically knowing stuff like this.

There are no internal transfers into the Double Degree Medical Program at USYD. Only two pathways.
  1. Undergraduate Entry
    1. MySydney - low socioeconomic status based on the SEIFA Index of Education and Occupation (IEO) SA1 - If eligible, 99.5+ ATAR requirement
    2. Regional and Remote - AGSC stuff (99.5+ ATAR)
    3. Gadigal Program - Indigenous applicants only (heavily reduced ATAR requirement that gets revised each year for DDMP)
    4. Others - 99.95 ATAR required

Note: These are the first steps required before other admission criteria including assessment days etc.
  2. Postgraduate Entry
    1. I'm not going into the specifics but generally speaking, you can start applying for this pathway from your final year of your undergraduate degree. You need to have sat the GAMSAT (can start sitting from penultimate year onwards). Using both your university grades and GAMSAT score, you can send in an application for MD at USYD (provided you meet the minimum criteria). Note that minimums are generally NOT competitive scores.
