Hi all, my daughter got 96 atar and got admission in science Melbourne uni. She wants to try for non standard entry this year. She will be sitting ucat again in 2024. Please guide us the cut off as non standard student. How much ucat score and gpa or wam you need to securefor interview invites?? How many people get in as non standard as I have heard very little seats available for them. Anyone got it as non standard i this forum? If yes please guide us. For reference We live in Victoria

Non-standard Medicine Entry

Unfortunately the non-standard pathways have got narrower especially for non-NSW applicants.
- JCU doesn't require UCAT but allocates only a handful of places to non-standard. From this year's outcome it looks like GPA near 7.0 plus strong links to rurality (via support/reference letters)
- JMP requires GPA 4.8+ and UCAT last year was 95+ %ile (I haven't checked what UCAT this year is)
- UNSW requires GPA 6.5+ and UCAT 93+ %ile
- WSU has become near impossible for non-NSW, requiring UCAT 98-99 %ile *and* 800+ VR score
There's also Bond uni and internal transfer for Adelaide/Curtin students if your daughter is interested.
If she gets GPA 6.5+, 3100 UCAT should be enough for UNSW interview.
I don't think that's enough for JMP and it's far from WSU's 3300 for non-NSW.
We have held the view it's non-standard for 1-2 years, if unsuccessful then GAMSAT. But if you imply UCAT is at the expense of GAMSAT's prep time, given how the pathways have narrowed you might want to try UCAT just one year then switch focus to GAMSAT.

Hello, I'm an international applicant in NSW with 98.35 ATAR and 30th UCAT. I'm willing to resit the UCAT again as a first year undergrad. Is there a chance for non-standard entry with a high enough UCAT? which unis tend to favour intl students and can I still use the ATAR to apply for UON and WSU or will it only be GPA?

I'm thinking about applying for specified credit for my previous international baccalaureate studies. Would this affect my application for non-standard entry because if I receive the credit, my GPA will be based on 6 units (2 subjects), but I will still have credit for the 8 units. Would that be okay?
JMP only considers your GPA if you have done 1+FTE (8+units) *without* counting credits. With [6+2] JMP will use your ATAR/IB, you'd be okay if your IB is equiv to 94.3+.
If your IB is equiv to 95.5+ you're okay for WSU regardless of the GPA.
If not you'd need GPA 6.5+ in case WSU doesn't recognise [6+2] as 1FTE, or GPA 6.2+ if [6+2] = 1FTE.
I don't know how UNSW/JCU/Bond treat credit units to help, sorry.

Hi there, I was wondering how WSU determines wether an applicant is from GWS or not? I have been living in GWS for over 10 years however will be moving interstate to live on campus at university in melbourne for a year. Will i still be considered as a GWS applicant by WSU? I plan on reapplying to medicine this year with my first year GPA and UCAT score. Any help would be much appreciated!

By the rulebook you'd cease to qualify for GWS unfortunately. WSU says living 5+years in GWS immediately before the application, meaning if you have moved to Melb it won't be immediately before.Hi there, I was wondering how WSU determines wether an applicant is from GWS or not? But I don't know whether you can persuade WSU to accommodate this rule. I remember one applicant like that did get an interview off the GWS interview cutoff.

Hey thanks for this! I’ll be living in melbourne for 6-7 months only on campus to study however will be return back home in a GWS region. I’ll call them up tomorrow and check! Also, to be safe, let’s say as a non NSW applicant who is also non standard, what GPA and UCAT score is ideal to get an offer into WSU, UoN/UoNe JMP? They are my top picks since they admit non standards. I want to start studying now although i haven’t even started uni yet lol, and better get started on my UCAT ASAP!
JMP : GPA 4.7+ UCAT 96%ile, NSW or non-NSW doesn't matter.
WSU : ATAR 95.5+ or GPA 6.2+ non-GWS (lower for GWS), either is fine.
UCAT interview cutoff has three levels GWS, NSW, non-NSW. Each uses the formula (0.5xVR) + 0.5x(DM+QR+AR)/3 so it doesn't correlate with the overall percentile, difficult to describe how high you need.
That's for getting an interview, place offer then largely depends on the interview.
JMP recognises any GPA that's 8+ units (without counting credits). So you count from now back, the most recent such GPA will be used. Only when you have none such GPA they go all the way back to ATAR/IB. (They only require 4.75+ hurdle btw, after that selection is all on UCAT then interview)Just hijacking this convo to ask, in this example, instead of IB would they consider ATAR for demotic applicants or GPAs from previous degrees if the 6 units are from a postgrad degree? Thank you! Also, I was wondering how they look at an applicants GPA/WAM if they have only completed a year of their degree and use first year results to apply? I am taking 120 credit points in my first year, which is higher than what most people take.
Also, considering i was moving to university in melbourne to study, i discovered that i will only be at university for a few months, and the rest of the time i will spend in my primary place of residence which is in a GWS region. Given these circumstances, I’m sure i would qualify as GWS applicant + considering i’ve spent over 10 years living there? Or should i double check?

You can’t directly translate a single GPA to a single WAM as, for example (and depending on the uni*), anything from 60-69 WAM = credit = 5 GPA and this is the case for each unit you complete.What would a 4.7 GPA be as a WAM? i’m not sure how to calculate that given i’m completing only a year of university (120 credit points)
Ie. to illustrate, someone who gets 60/100 for each of their 8 first year units will have a GPA of 5 and a WAM of 60. Someone who gets 69 for each of their units will also have a GPA of 5, but a WAM of 69.
* some unis use a slightly different GPA scoring system (65-74 = credit = 5).
ETA: I also think some units can be weighted differently which affects WAM but not GPA if I’m remembering correctly.
Basically you need to think of them as different measurements and score them completely separately. JMP uses GPA so learn how to calculate that and don’t worry about WAM if JMP is your aim.

Don’t worry about interview prep until you get one. That will still leave you plenty of time.
