Non-standard Medicine Entry

So they will use those 6 units from said degree and add remaining 2 units from previous degree to calculate the GPA
No JMP will disregard your 6-unit postgrad study since it doesn't have 8+ units of its own.
Which means they'll use your whole undergrad degree's GPA as it has 8+ units.
Not a big deal at JMP since it only needs to be above the 4.7 hurdle, after that it doesn't matter how high (since all on UCAT to get interview then all on the interview for place offer).

So to simplify things what GPA and UCAT score should i aim for to get a very good chance to get into the JMP at UoN and WSU
You can only aim the GPA & UCAT to get an interview at these two schools. Can't aim them for getting into since that largely is on the interview.

JMP : GPA 4.7+ UCAT 96+%ile
WSU : GPA 6.2+, UCAT (0.5xVR) + 0.167x(DM+QR+AR) = roughly 730+ for GWS, 780+ for NSW, 830+ non-NSW.

If I start a university bachelor's degree in the second semester, will I still be considered a standard applicant at JMP if it is my first year after graduating, because they won't care about my GPA or university study?

And same with WSU, because my results will be finalised only after the interview offers come out, so they will only look at ATAR. Or will I still be counted as Non-Standard.

Would appreciate some info, can't seem to find an answer for this anywhere.
Thanks

Assuming "first year after graduating" refers to graduating high school - yes that's correct. JMP will ignore your one-semester GPA and use your ATAR. (I think with one semester you're technically non-standard but it's no different to school leaver on JMP selection criteria).

Your uni study is counted as at end of year, for WSU you will be non-standard with one semester. But your ATAR is still useable if it's 95.5+ since the requirement is either GPA 6.5+ or ATAR 95.5+.

Hello everyone,
I have recived am ATAR of 99.75 the past academic year and am studying engineering at UNSW. Knowing that only UNSW, JPM, JMP, and JCU accept non standards, does UNSW use the GPA or ATAR for after 1 year of university? Lastly, because I am studying university in Sydney, am I considered an NSW applicant?
Thanks very much in advance

With 1+FTE, provided your 1-year uni is 70+ WAM UNSW will use best of GPA or ATAR. So at least 99.75 or possibly higher if you get GPA 7.

because I am studying university in Sydney, am I considered an NSW applicant?
Not sure but likely yes if your residential address is NSW. Don't give a non-NSW home/family address.

I'm back, I applied in 2021 for 2022 entry as a non-standard, however my UCAT score wasn't enough to land me interview offers for WSU/JMP.

with a few years of physio work under my belt i'm ready to take the plunge again for these two unis, has everything stayed the same since then Specifically, if your gpa/atar is still just a hurdle requirement for these two unis.

Also, with my unimpressive GPA of 5.8, are there any postgraduate entry unis (GAMSAT) who also just have the gpa as a hurdle requirement too. lol this just sounds like me praying for options at this point

Yes GPA/ATAR is still a hurdle for JMP/WSU. Unfortunately the UCAT cutoff for interview has gone up since 2022 - JMP from 94%ile to 95%ile to now 96%ile.
WSU weighted section score 740 GWS, 780 NSW, 820 non-NSW (indicatively, if your section scores are evenly across to remove the section-weight effect that equates to 88%ile, 95%ile, 99%ile).

Afaik USyd has had GPA 5 hurdle for its graduate entry, check their website see if it has changed. Best of luck.

Hi, I'm currently a domestic first-year student at Curtin university and want to switch to medicine. I am willing to apply for Curtin and WSU medicine but don't really understand the WSU process for "course switchers from another university". Please let me know if you have any suggestions as well for Curtin or WSU.

You can’t course switch to JPM (which is the program WSU falls under). You apply with UCAT for an interview then your ATAR or GPA is used to meet the academic hurdle. You compete alongside all other applicants.

The process is on their website so that’d be a good place to start.

Hi All. I applied for non-standard last year with a GPA of 6.5 and UCAT of 3080 and no offers and have decided to try one more time. However last year i was in VIC doing just commerce but this year have made a move to UNSW doing Eng/commerce on a scholarship. This degree is much harder and am expecting to not do as well as last year. I'm wondering how my GPA will be calculated, will it be a combination or a clean slate start. (Am hoping its combined as im struggling with eng especially with UNSW having a HD as 85 compared to VIC uni's 80.)
Thank you!
edit: with my GPA likely to drop below 6.2 im assuming my only chances are JMP lmk if im wrong :)

Apart from JMP you should be eligible for WSU as well. I remember reading somewhere WSU will use the highest of your (multiple) GPAs or ATAR which helps you qualify, so in your case either the 6.5 or ATAR if it was 95.5+.

I believe UNSW counts all uni studies together, unlikely to have a chance with GPA less than 6.5.

Wsu considers university study starting at 4 units, JMP clearly states that their 1 fte must be at the end of the year, when does JPM consider this? End of year or at time if application?

For all schools including WSU/JPM it's as at end of year.
Beware that if you have done 4 to 7 units at end of year a higher GPA is needed for WSU (unless your ATAR was 95.5+ then it can be used instead of GPA).

I graduated with a bachelors degree in 2021, just wondering for NSL entry for WSU/JMP/etc if there is a cut-off period before tertiary results cannot be considered anymore, I know it can be a thing with some graduate entry schools.

On the other hand, can atar still be used, I have an atar of 98.55 from 2017 and was wondering if this might be competitive for UNSW entry

Some unis have a 10 year recency of study requirement but that’s the only cut off I’m aware of.

Given you have a completed degree, JPM and JMP will use that and I don’t think either have the 10 year requirement.

Even with a completed degree, UNSW will assess your ATAR. Unfortunately yours would be too low to be competitive (I think you need roughly 99.55) so you’d need to rely on GPA for them.

Hello, I'm in my second year at the moment, doing a degree that is medical related. The course got harder as I moved into second year, and I feel as though I won't have time to study for ucat next year and also to maintain a good GPA/WAM. Would it be a bad choice if I transfer my degree to another degree that would have less workload? (I have thought this through and feel like the course I'm studying is not for me, so I'm currently considering)

Also, if I do a double degree (a 5 year course), from when can I apply to do GAMSAT? I know that for three-year course, it is from the third year, but not too sure if that applies for a 5 year course.

Thank you!

It sounds like you've already made your decision and are looking for someone to affirm said decision. In that case, if you've thought it through and the course genuinely isn't for you, then by all means switch. As long as it's not a switch specificlly to study UCAT.

The only thing I would say is weigh up your personal factors e.g. time vs money. If you're not strapped for cash and need to graduate ASAP, then you're all good.

GAMSAT is for graduate students. As per the website:

"To be eligible, you need to have already completed a bachelor or an undergraduate honours degree, or you will meet the entry requirements outlined by your prospective institution at the time you are applying for entry."

Which means your admission through GEMSAS will only be valid in your last year or after you graduate your double degree. If you're looking for entry specifically through graduate entry, consider finishing your current degree with 6.5+ GPA and sitting GAMSAT. Youre GPA is valid for up to 10 years and you can still sit the UCAT + GAMSAT after you graduate. << If this is a consideration definitely weigh up whether you can tolerate working in your current field though given that you've said it's not for you. I have known people who went through this path and worked full/part time while studying both UCAT and GAMSAT for a better chance. Some were successful and some, not yet, but it's a risk they were willing to take.

Hello, I have a friend and they're in their final year of Biomedical Science at Monash Uni. They're not feeling too confident with their GAMSAT scores, so they're considering potentially studying for the UCAT next year and trying to get in via the non-standard pathway. However, they're confused about what GPA would be required for JMP, WSU and UNSW. They said their UAC GPA is currently 6.55/7 (and they could raise it to around 6.59/7). Would that be competitive? Their GEMSAS GPA is around 6.7/7 (if that's what gets looked at). If it's still fine, then would you be able to tell me what UCAT score would be required?
TIA! :)

UAC will use the 6.55 GPA, not the GEMSAS 6.7.
6.55 is more than enough for WSU & JMP, just over the 6.5 floor for UNSW.

UCAT for UNSW is 92-93%ile to get an interview, the higher the better to raise place-offer chances.

JMP is around 95%ile iirc to get interview, place offers are all on the interview (meaning higher UCAT is good but doesn't help extra).

WSU for non-NSW applicants is a tough *weighted* 97%ile.
VR is weighted three times the other sections, so a high-VR 95%ile can get interview while a low-VR 98%ile may not.

What are/is there any particular disadvantage within the application process of applying to JMP/WSU as an interstate (QLD) non-standard applicant? Higher UCAT cutoff? interstate quota's?
