NZ Students Studying in Australia

Hey everyone,
I have finished HSFY this year at Otago and im wondering if there are any Australian universities that still have their med/dent applications open. If not, is it possible to apply for 2025 for Australian universities with my HSFY grades while studying something else in 2024?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Probably not for a non-standard applicant with the exception of Bond University which is full fee paying and their school year doesn’t start until May. Applications are probably open now (or opening very soon if not).

And yes, but with a caveat. They’ll use your HSFY grades, but most will also use the grades of whatever you study in 2024 (combined). Search ‘non-standard entry’ for more info on that pathway, there’s heaps of it detailed thoroughly in the forums already.

Just wandering with how the conversions work. Does JCU use the GEMSAS conversions for UOA GPA or the AUS distinction one as both give me two very different GPA’s when I use them.

What Australian universities are open to accepting graduate entry from Otago? I am also curious about how GPA conversions work.
Except Monash all Aus graduate-entry schools accept NZ-graduate applicants (i.e. the 10ish GEMSAS schools + USyd + Flinders)

You do know you'll have to sit GAMSAT?

For GEMSAS GPA see Appendix B page 99 this document
> https://gemsas.edu.au/images/pdf/2024-medicine-gemsas-admissions-guide.pdf

i.e. If your Otago transcript shows individual subject marks, use column A + the grade-point column next to it (80+=7, 75-79=6.5, 70-74=6 etc).
If transcript only shows grades without marks, use column H.

For USyd/Flinders GPA use 85+= 7, 75-84= 6, 65-74= 5, 50-64= 4.

QTAC will calculate GPA for JCU.
They don't use the GEMSAS conversions, it's 85+= 7, 75-84= 6, 65-74= 5, 50-64= 4.

Damn that sucks, my GPA is a lot worse compared to the GEMSAS calculation unfortunately.

Just out of curiosity, do you believe a 6.25 is competitive for JCU or is it wishful thinking. Thanks for your help.

JCU have changed their admissions criteria this year so we’ll know more about what is competitive once offers come out. In the meantime, you can check out the scores that got interview invites in the Interview Invites Collated Data thread.

Hi, do Australian unis get our NCEA results earlier than the students?
I am still waiting for interview offers from Aus dental schools since my exam results are not out yet.

I am hoping to get into USyd double degree dentistry and they said their interview conditions are non-negotiable (held on 18 Jan 2024, face-to-face).
I had a chance to talk to the USyd admissions team and they said even though our exam results may come out late, NZ students still have a chance to sit the interviews.

The results for this year come out on 17 Jan 2024, meaning it is only a day before the interview date.

I am a domestic applicant (NZ citizen) so I need to be on campus to attend the interview face-to-face. Just in case I get an interview offer from them, I already purchased a plane ticket to Sydney so I will be there regardless of the exam results.

Because the dates are so tight, I was wondering if unis get the results earlier than we do.

We know the unis do get ATAR results 1-2 days earlier
(like USyd emailing invites to students before they knew they were getting 99.95).

Don't know about NCEA though, sorry.

Hello,
Please someone reply that has applied to med from NZ to AUS really stressed my S1 first year results aren't that good and lost if I should still aim to do post grad med at Aus. How exactly does the GPA conversion work from NZ to AUS since GPA system is different. Also will my sem 1 grade affect the overall GPA that much???

Applying for Aus graduate entry will be mostly via GEMSAS, plus separately for USyd & Flinders.

For the GEMSAS schools, use column H on page 107 this doc
> https://gemsas.edu.au/images/pdf/2025-medicine-gemsas-admissions-guide.pdf
Basically A+ / A / A- = 7
B+ = 6.5 , B = 6 , B- = 5.5 etc

For USyd (also for undergrad med UNSW/WSU/JMP non-standard) it's via UAC. UAC scale is
A+ & A = 7
A- & B+ = 6
B & B- = 5
C+ to C- = 4

Note that GEMSAS-calculated GPA is quite different to UAC, because GEMSAS uses 80+ = HD 7 whereas UAC uses 85+.

hello thank you for replying so is it like calculated by the year average so if you have a year average of 75% that would be used to calc the GPA for that year? also is it really that hard to get in been seeing sm people try for so long and not get in feeling kind of defeated already since first year results aren't that good

If your uni results are given by individual subjects / courses then it's not the year average but the average of the individual grade points.

Example you do two units and get 92 & 72. The year average would be 82 = GEMSAS 7 but not so.
The correct method is 92 = GEMSAS 7, 72 = GEMSAS 6. GEMSAS GPA (7+6)/2 = 6.5

For GEMSAS schools you need 6.2+ up to 6.5+ depending how high your GAMSAT score is.

For the undergrad schools UNSW WSU JMP see the Non-standard section in this table the GPA + UCAT required
> [Undergrad] - (2023 Updated) Med schools Selection Criteria Y12s & Non-standards

oh okay thank you, is this calc GEMSAS used for Melb uni too ? or do they have a different weighted system.
Thank you

A1 replies: Yes UMelb is a GEMSAS school & uses the GEMSAS grade-point scale.
As for weightings see in the GEMSAS Guide I linked above. Some schools use no weighting so equal weights between the years. UMelb iirc uses 3x for 3rd year units, 2x for 2nd year units, 1x for 1st year units, then the sum of grade points is divided by the total weights.

Hello, I'm a new zealand high school student.
For my ncea level 2 external results I didn't get the marks which I wanted, mainly merit and a few achieved. I got merit endorsed for all of my subjects. And excellence endorsed for level 2 in general.

I wanted to go for an Australian med school, and I'm a bit confused as to whether Australia med schools take level 2 nzqa results? With my results should I apply or should I wait until my level 3 results so that i can get a chance to improve and apply later next year?

Everything you need to know about the ATAR calculation from NCEA results can be found here : https://www2.nzqa.govt.nz/international/nz-quals-overseas/study-with-ncea/australia/
