NZ Students Studying in Australia

Yes, with a 2-year Masters the 3FTE schools will use the two years plus your final year undergrad. Iirc one or two schools only use your undergrad plus 0.2 GPA "bonus" for Masters.

An alternative is you sit UCAT and apply to undergrad medicine JMP, WSU, JCU. These schools use your most recent degree Postgrad Dip's GPA.
Oh right, I didn't know that. Do you have any clue just a rough estimate of what a competitive UCAT looks like in these schools because I imagine its different from New Zealand.

JCU you'll need 6.2+ (the higher the better) plus a thorough written application detailing why you want to study med. They combine into a ranking for selection for interview.

WSU you need Grad Dip 6.2+ or Masters 5.4+. JMP requires very little you won't have a problem.
GPA is a hurdle for WSU/JMP meaning doesn't matter how much over. Downside is it makes UCAT extremely competitive, you need like 95+%ile. Good luck.

Hey! I'm currently doing HSFY at university of Otago, and was just wondering what sorta UCAT score and GPA I'd need to apply to australian uni's for dentistry as a non-standard.

2nd question - Does University of Adelaide do non-standard entry for dentistry? not sure if they do or not but eager to find out if anyone knows!

hiya,

I got into Bond for the Sept intake and I was wondering if anyone has any financial tips for paying tuition fees (e.g. getting grants, any type of financial assistance, etc)

Thanks

I have a GPA of 8 from UoA (1FTE, applying as a non-standard) and thought it would translate to a 99+ selection rank based on the conversion tables such as this one from UQ. I called QTAC to find out that my selection rank is 97.5. I've requested a reassessment but I was wondering if anyone here knows how a selection rank would be calculated based off an NZ GPA or if any chance my selection rank could be inaccurate. Thanks

You need to work out for each unit you did what your result was /100 and assign it a high distinction (for my uni this was scores 80 and above), distinction (scores 70 to 79), credit (60 to 69), or pass (50 to 59) rating.

Then convert the word grade to a GPA grade
HD: 7
DN: 6
CR: 5
PP: 4

Then add them up, then divide by total number of units. That gives you your GPA on a 7 point scale. Then use the guide based on the FTE you’ve done and see if there’s still a discrepancy.

Keep in mind, FTE at most Aus unis is 8 units.

As per the table: you’d need 6.5+ on a 7 point scale to get a selection rank 99+ for UQ. ETA: QTAC seem to have calculated it as 5.75.

Across my 8 papers that I did full time for a year, I have 4 A+ (90-100), 2 A (85-59), 2 B+ (75-79). For the institutions that I'm applying to, this should come out to 4 HDs and 4 DNs. This calculates an estimated GPA 6.5 on a scale to 7, which like you mentioned is 99.00 for UQ. Could there be something else that is considered in this calculation?

Your marks should be 6x 7s + 2x 6s = 6.75
QTAC has given you 97.5 = 5.75 which is 6x 6s + 2x 5s.

I can't see why they drop 1 grade point each unit. Maybe call QTAC again to ask for the details.

I see, I'll try to ask them tomorrow. Thank you for the help

So they’ve updated my GPA to 6.75 and my selection rank to 99.55. I’ve asked them to inform the institutions that I’ve applied to, including Griffith Uni that has already sent out their interview invites. This is partially my fault and my UCAT’s not very competitive so I don’t expect any change in outcome but I at least want a fair assessment to be made. Mistakes like this aren’t common but I encourage everyone here to make sure they are being accurately assessed.

I'm planning on calling QTAC tomorrow to ask for my selection rank too. I currently attend University of Otago doing Health Sciences First Year. I got 1 exam left and my predicted GPA on a 9.0 scale is gonna sit around 8.5-8.7ish probably. What should I be expecting for my GPA/ATAR/Selection Rank (no idea what i'm given tbh, i'm applying to aus uni's as a non-standard since i'm a first year uni student already, no longer high school leaver), before they tell me what they think so I can see if they've made errors like in ur situation?

Since you still have an exam to sit, you’ll likely need to finish that and then get an official academic transcript from UoO to get a selection rank from QTAC.

For the most part, most institutions in AU have a similar grading system where an 80% is a HD but I would recommend you check the websites of each institution you’re applying to to make sure.

Hey, yea but would the 80%+ on a paper mean HD for every uni?
The NSW/QLD/SA unis that non-standards apply to, all use 85+ HD, 75-84 D, 65-74 CR. So UAC/QTAC use the same.
(I'm not sure about LaTrobe & UTas).

So they’ve updated my GPA to 6.75 and my selection rank to 99.55.
I'm still curious how it came to 97.5 earlier. You said partially your fault, but how?

It just seems crazy to me though, because people taking health science here at UoO who are serious about getting into med/dent all need their papers to be in the 90%+ range to realistically get an offer.

Meaning that anyone here serious about applying for med/dent, and also for Aus, would all likely just have 7.0 GPA’s, which is why i was asking before hahaha.

I’ll call qtac tmrw and update👍

They haven't clarified how they came to a 97.5 but they've admitted to human error. I say it's partially my fault because I could have checked earlier, but applicants definitely shouldn't have to doubt the reliability of TAC assessments in the first place.

Just called QTAC and now I'm updated: The guy on the phone said he doesn't know how they calculate my Selection Rank lol (I proposed the 80 or 85%+ per paper for HD, and he says he doesn't know...)

But he said that assuming I maintain my current grades for these current sem 2 exams I'm in rn (they looked at my official sem 1 transcript), then I'll be at a 99.95 (idk if they looked at my high school CIE grades too or not, he didn't mention them at all but I submitted those too onto QTAC).

Hey everyone,
I have finished HSFY this year at Otago and im wondering if there are any Australian universities that still have their med/dent applications open. If not, is it possible to apply for 2025 for Australian universities with my HSFY grades while studying something else in 2024?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
