NZ Students Studying in Australia

Do you study Medicine in Australia?
Yes, but I’m not from NZ originally. That said, as a Kiwi you’re eligible to apply to all non-standard and graduate unis in Aus the same as an Aussie. Definitely check out the non-standard threads if you’re interested in that pathway.

Sweet thanks for the reply. Do you know by any chance if it's QTAC that would do my GPA calculations for the non-standard unis?

For application to JMP, will UAC inform me directly of my AUS GPA or is there a process for this?. If I know my gpa beforehand it would give me relief to know that I have passed the gpa hurdle. Thanks.

Nope. They only release this info to you for a fee, I believe. You can calculate your own GPA though.

UAC will calculate your GPA from your results that are provided to them from you/your institution.

If you want to know what they calculate it as you can pay for UACs QAS (qualification application service) this will provide you with your calculated GPA as well as your calculated selection rank. It’s important to note though this service costs around $100 from memory.

Thanks definitely something to consider!. Also, for NZ students I was wondering, how do you guys handle student loan while studying med in Australia. From my understanding, interest starts to go up after 183 days when overseas (according to study link). This seems particularly hard for students with completed degrees in NZ who have to pay back before moving to Australia to study. Is there a way to solve this problem?.

Note: Do read Cathay's post though

Although IRD does say that if you back in New Zealand for at least 32 of those 184 days, you are considered NZ based and hence no interest on your student loan, I wouldn't think this is practical unless your university gives you 5 week semester breaks continuously; even then you need to meticulous plan each 184 days interval.

You can apply to NZ IRD to keep your student loan interest-free while you are studying in Aus. See: Studying overseas when I have a student loan

Hello, I am an New Zealand citizen and I am most probably going to be studying in Australia to try for med again this year (as I tried in University of Otago last year, but did not get in). I have 2 options currently where I do bachelor of medical research in university of Tasmania, as that is a seperate entry pathway into medicine. Or I will go to Deakin university to finish bachelor of biomedical science and apply to Deakin. However while studying In Australia I want to apply to James cook university and bond university in 2023 after I improve my gpa. I want to know whether I can apply to other universities After finishing my undergraduate degree in Australia, and what universities are there? Because I know some universities like Utas and Deakin prefer their own students for graduate medicine entry! Please let me know more information around this as I am trying to gather as much info as possible and keep my options open! I have not yet begun studying for gamsat (will do soon though), but have done ucat for the past 2 years in a row.

Did you know that the UTAS program does not guarantee you entry into Med there? It just allows you to apply for very limited places via a competitive process.

Is the eCAF something we have to fill out again every year in our med degree, and is this the same for NZ and Australian citizens ?

How did you find the GAMSAT? Are you still looking into Deakin?

Hi everyone. I'm starting to look at Aussie unis after 2x rejections from Auckland (RIP). I am feeling very overwhelmed looking at everything! I will be applying with a Master's, so I can only apply to universities that use the GAMSAT, correct?

Also in terms of fees, I'm finding the whole thing very confusing. For example for Flinders, the annual indicative fees are $11,300 (Commonwealth supported). I intend on paying my fees upfront, so does this mean my annual cost will be roughly $11,300? The whole aussie loan system is so much more confusing than ours 😭 😭 Any help/pointers as to where to start with this stuff is appreciated

I don't think you have an option other than paying your fees upfront as a NZ candidate - most New Zealanders (aside from those on special category visas) are not eligible for FEE-HELP. As such, I think you have to arrange your own loans to cover your expenses.

Hollyw28 in addition to graduate unis, you can also apply to nonstandard unis (UCAT). These include UNSW, JPM, JMP, and Curtin. As well as JCU (no UCAT but written responses to various questions), and Bond (no UCAT but private uni so $$$ - substantially more than the $11k you’ve quoted above).

There’s a few threads dedicated to this route here at MSO so, for more info, search ‘nonstandard’.
