Otago Halls of Residence

Either way...does that mean bad grades probably won't have a chance of getting into either Mags or Carrington...?

My school career adviser told me St Margaret's always looks for people who have something that they can contribute to the Hall, especially in music. So if you do a good range of extra-curriculum that involves plenty of sports, music and leadership, you probably will get in with just Level 2 with Merit. Unlike me though.

Yeah St. Margs seems to love the choir by the sounds of it. Knox is really strong on that as well.

My understanding is that if you can demonstrate a high level of involvement in one particular extra-curricular pursuit this is normally enough (if you have level 2 with at least merit). Good involvement in one area looks better than patchy involvement in a number of areas IMO.

I've basically decided to apply for St Margaret's, but now I'm worried that I won't get accepted. I only achieved NCEA Level 1 and 2 with Merit, I'm doing a lot better this year but I'm they probably don't look at Level 3 results, also I'm not very musical or sporty, I'm involved in a variety of clubs though and I do social sports, so if I put St Margaret's as First Preference, what's my chances of getting in?

Would Studhulme be ok as a second choice?

No one I know knows anything about Studholme, it's a pretty unknown hall from what I can gather.. I guess that means it's quiet?

I hope so! I would like to go to a quiet place if I don't get into my first choice- which I am still deciding between Arana and Carrington

Hey guys!

I'm currently applying for the residential colleges, and was wondering if my choices were ok. Well, the thing is i was going to choose st mags as my first choice BUT, now reading like what is 49 pages of this thread it does not seem like the best idea. Especially considering that Im one of those average students with just merit endorsement in Lvl 1 and 2, and with no soild extra-curricular background.

So my choices are;
1) Hayward
2) Cumberland
3) Unicol (??)

Btw, do you guys think Hayward is a good first option? And what about the other 2? cumberland and unicol?

I got into St Mags with exactly the same profile as you. Just apply.

EDIT: Sorry forgot to mention that it was off the wait list

I do wish people would stop calling a merit endorsement 'average'. It puts you in the top 29% of those who *get* level 2 (which is far from everyone) according to NZQA's website. I certainly didn't get an endorsement in level 2 (or 3) /rant. [/offtopic]
Anyway, your choice of colleges look good. If you really want St Marg's, then I guess it couldn't hurt to take a shot and apply there, but personally I think Hayward would be a great first choice (the rooms are so ridiculously huge!). And your second/third choices look like pretty good backups, they're the sort of halls that you don't need to put 1st on your preference list to get into (UniCol wasn't even on my preference list, and I ended up there :p ).

Lol [MENTION=10716]frootloop[/MENTION] its funny how you say that the rooms are "ridiculously huge" cause thats what got me interested in hayward in the first place^_^.
Btw, if I were to put st mags as my first choice but then didn't get in, what do you think my chances are of getting into hayward as my second choice?
Or is putting Hayward as second choice a bad idea?

Hey guys. It's more than likely that I'll be going to Otago next year. I have applied to Knox, Hayward, and Uni Col. I have to fairly good academic results, play a few sports and am in a choir and debate team, so I don't think my chances of any of those are too horrible. But to be honest I'm not really fussed where I end up. So yeah I guess see some of you next year...

I'm just going to jump into this thread and ask - in the case of students who aren't first years' but not post-graduates either, what is the selection proecess/preference for the colleges? does anyone know where I can find this? I had a look at each colleges website, but it doesn't really say much, except for the fact that I don't need a reference for most of them...

I'm going to feel super weird next year, going into a hall as a newbie, but a 2nd year :/ OH GOD WHAT IF I AM SHUNNED by the college?

EDIT: Hayward has a BALL? OK, defs not applying there then haha.

Pretty sure they all have balls, Nimbus! And I'm sure you won't be shunned haha, I know there's a guy at Carrington this year who's 2nd year med so it's not like it's unheard of.

Just flat, halls are lame anyways. Also you don't have to go to balls lol. They seem a bit dumb to me.\

p.s: you're young enough that you could pretend to be a first year anyways :P

[OFFTOPIC]go away you're dumb [/OFFTOPIC]

oh god. they ALL have a ball? well... they can't force me to dance right?

FFS, WHY??????

No, i'm just going to keep reading through the endless handbook's and FIND one that doesn't have any sort of formal events what so ever, or at least no compulsory formal events. dressing up/dancing, is just not my thing.

you don't have to go to any of them if you don't want to - they can't FORCE you to! I saw the carrington ball pics on facebook and a tonne of people who go there didn't attend.
