Otago Halls of Residence

Hey guys. It's more than likely that I'll be going to Otago next year. I have applied to Knox, Hayward, and Uni Col. I have to fairly good academic results, play a few sports and am in a choir and debate team, so I don't think my chances of any of those are too horrible. But to be honest I'm not really fussed where I end up. So yeah I guess see some of you next year...
Hey! Welcome to MSO :)

Welcome to MSO. It appears the otago kids get stuck here and never leave. :/

Hmmm what would Hayward be like as a second choice? Would it be okay to put it as a second choice?
My choices right now are:
1 Arana
2 Studhulme/Hayward (not yet decided)
3 Unicol

lalalarry. I've been wondering the same thing, i wonder what the chances of getting into hayward would be from second choice. Especially when I've heard its becoming one of the more popular halls.

As it does seem hayward is getting more popular it's quite hard to give an indication of how you would fare putting it as second choice. I very much doubt they are at the level where they only take first choice hayward's so it's probably a fairly safe bet for second.

Otago Residential colleges for 2013!

Hay guys! Im applying for the residential colleges at otago but not sure how to go about it? =/
Heres my preferences at the moment:
1. Hayward
2. Carrington
3. Cumberland or Unicol

What do you guys think?

... I will merge this thread with the current discussion.

Ok, I just feel this needs to be pointed out:
1) Which college/s you'd enjoy more is obviously going to be highly subjective, so asking us 'What do you think of my list' is going to get different answers from different people. For example, most would tell you that UniCol is a bad idea, while I (who went there) reckon it's a great hall.
2) This really isn't that difficult. Pick your favourite college, put it as your first preference. Then pick two colleges that *aren't* the 'Only really accept first-choicers' colleges (ie: Carrington, St Margaret's, Knox, Selwyn, Arana, probably (to a lesser extent) Hayward are all BAD second/third choices) that you wouldn't mind living in.
It's all really up to you, and what you value most. For example, if you want to be super close to/on campus, the likes of UniCol and St Marg's would be great for you. If you want to already know 50% of your second-year med class before starting med, Carrington would probably be a good pick.

This is thread has been really helpful so far haha. I'm definitely going to make myself make a decision by Wed, and right now my choices in order are Mags, Hayward and Studholme.
Just one last question, how would you compare the facilities between Hayward, Studholme and Cumby?
And is Cumberland really rowdy? (actually that was two questions but.)

I wish we could actually see the food served at each college instead of relying on their descriptions. :( It's pretty much the deciding factor. Anybodyup for taking and posting some pictures? :D I guess I'll just have to stockpile my own kimchi.

Carrington is known for having really good food and unicol is known for having quite average food. The rest are somewhere in the middle :P

Cool! I may just be the pickiest eater in the North Island so (shamefully,) I've worried about it a lot.

I'm quite interested in the formal dinners at Mags though, esp. getting to talk with guests. That may in itself be worth starving for. ^__^

I'm sure my friends would back me up in saying that I'm the pickiest eater in the south island! From what I've heard of the menus a lot of it is largely generic stuff and I'm sure they have leftover sandwiches or something from lunch you can have if you're not a fan of that nights offering.

If I end up at Otago, we need to have a competition. Battle of the Narrowest Palate!! Loser has to eat a blended selection of the previous day's menu for a week!

While I'm sure you all drove your parents insane with your picky-ness, it'd be just dandy if this thread could be kept at least sort of on-topic :) Thanks!

Sorry! Ok, back to residential colleges - I've sifted through hundreds of comments but noone has described the shared bathrooms. Is it bad manners to leave your toiletries there? Do you make shower schedules?

[offtopic] Wongtong, you don't want to get me started :D Suffice to say, my Auckland application section for Special dietary requirements exceeded the word limit.[/offtopic]

Yes and no. Sharing of showers becomes easier if anything (compared to living at home or flatting) - 5 showers between 25 people gives you a better chance of a shower being free at any given point than 1 shower between 5 people, for example.

Can't imagine it's very fun when your entire floor has the same 8am HUBS lecture or something :P
