Otago Halls of Residence

Can't imagine it's very fun when your entire floor has the same 8am HUBS lecture or something :P
I think there was only one occurrence in first year when a shower wasn't available when I wanted it. (I also can't think of a single occasion when my whole floor went to class at 8am!)

Flatting on the other hand is a completely different situation.

Fair enough.

[OFFTOPIC]I just say because I noted a group of like 20 carringtoners who would go to the same 8am HUBS all last semester :P[/OFFTOPIC]

Hey guys, Im seriously considering carrington as my top choice. However, I only got merit endorsement in NCEA lvl 1 and 2. But I got top in bio, phy, and maths, in my school last year, so yea, Im one of those people that choked in the final exams. I Don't have piano qualifications since i taught myself, but I got good enough to play at functions and a few weddings. I also play mens A grade tennis. What do you guys think of my chances of getting in? I feel my extra curriculars are sufficient, but I really feel my average lvl 2 grades will really let me down. I hope they do consider that some people dont do as well as they could in the final exams. Your help will be invaluably appreciated.

Obviously no one can give you a definite answer, but your chances sound pretty good! I've said many times already in this thread that L2 with merit is good enough if you have good extra-curriculars.

Guys, I know this would be stupid but is it ok if I put Aquinas third. One of you said Aquinas is a good hall but not very popular as not many people apply for it. Do you think they take third-choicer?

I hate to sound like a first-world-problems kid, but are there buses running from colleges through the main campus? The thought of frequent walks in the rain with my laptop and precious notes is the most unappealing one about this whole enterprise. The Otago website seems quite anti-car too.

[EDIT: Please disregard. Dad said that I need to just suck it up.]

Only aquinas does, because of the distance. The rest are within 15 minutes walk. Some much shorter than that. Get a decent bag and use an umbrella?

Rather than just sucking it up, sounds like it'd help for you to know where the colleges actually are - most of them are *on* the main campus! It'd be a bit pointless to have a bus take you 20 seconds down the street, wouldn't it?

Selwyn, Studholme, Arana, St Margs, Unicol, CityCol, and Toroa are all within 300-500m of St David Lecture Theatre (the main health sci lecture theatre); Hayward, Cumberland and Carrington are on the order of 600-700m from St David's; Knox, Salmond and Aquinas are the 1.5k away ones. In fact, Selwyn is like less than 150m from St David's, that's like a 1-2 minute walk.

With the exception of Knox, Salmond and Aquinas, you'll find that the colleges are all within the big 'campus' area that is North Dunedin, and I'm pretty sure a decent bag plus an umbrella will have your laptop and notes surviving even the 20 minute walk to Aquinas, Selwyn or Knox.

Just to add my 2 cents worth, I recommend NOT to choose 3 "first choice" colleges. Such as St Margs, Arana, Carrington. Make sure you have a back - up option just in case.

Hi I am new to the forum :D just joined the forum 10 minutes ago, and this forum seems to be the most reliable website around. Since most of you are future doctors. So hopefully someone can tell me what is my odd of getting into Knox. Just applied for Knox yesterday and after reading through 53 pages of thread I realised that Knox is a really hard place to get into :P . But i only have a average result as I merit endorse for level 1 and level 2 ( 2 credit off E endorse for level 2, damn it). And the only co-curricular I have is school environmental committee, participated in Duke of Ed and helped salvation army which isn't a lot :(. But Knox seems to prefer those that have more co-curricular. So nervous right now :P

BTW the colleges I've chosen are:
1. Knox
2. Salmond
3. Cumberland

Welcome to MSO!

Welcome to MSO!!!

(You may want to ask our current Health-sci MSO'er from Knox @Caesar about the application process and your chances)

Hey guys im new to the forum, i have just recently applied for Carrington what do reckon are my chances of getting in?
I got level 1 and 2 with merit (40 Excellence) and I play quite a few sports eg 1st XI cricket, croquet, tennis, badminton which I have won regionals in badminton and tennis and I also captain these teams. I really dont do much cultural stuff but I am in the schools choir.

My first choice
Carrington
St Mags
Studholme

Hi guys!

New to the forum, so not even sure if I'm posting in the right area... I've recently applied for halls with the following as my options (in order):

1. Carrington
2. St. Margaret's
3. Hayward

I got Level 1 and 2 with Excellence (both over 100+ Excellence credits), and I play quite a lot of music - in Dunedin Youth Orchestra, lots of school musicals, madrigal choir, school orchestras. I'm also a school prefect (yes, probably a little too involved in school..), class prefect, peer leader, member of Amnesty and Volunteer Otago... Also, my family won't be living in Dunedin next year, so I'll be technically considered an 'International student' I think... (or I hope, otherwise I'll be homeless :( )

What are my chances for getting in?

Edit: AND - I was wondering, what do I write for my St. Margaret's additional application? :( I'm so stuck.
Please briefly explain why you are applying to St Margaret's College (one or two short paragraphs max) and What do you hope to add to the community at St Margaret's College (one or two short paragraphs max)?

Mainly stuck cos I don't know what I could contribute, for one... and for two, I don't know why I'm applying to St. Marg's. Reputation's sake, I suppose, cos they have a pretty good rep except for being known for housing anti-socials and extreme introverts :/ I don't know how much of that I believe! BUT I don't mind giving it a shot. Anyone can help me on what to say?

From what I've been told, you won't get into St Mags if you put it second. Carrington should be an in though with your extra cirriculars. I got into St Mags in second round offers so even if you don't get in at the end of the year you may get in January offers next year.

You should get into Carrington in first round... If not second for sure!

Just put in what you've said but with a positive spin...ie "I'm looking for a quiet, reputable college where I can concentrate on my studies..." and blah blah blah. There isn't much you can write that they haven't read before and it'll come across as a lot more genuine.

I suggest looking at their home page and picking a few things about it that you like. I remember saying I liked St Mags community spirit (they have a strong voluntary background).

And a warm welcome to all our newbies!

Hey musica209! Could I ask where you were asked to provide a separate Margs application? It was my second choice too, but I only recall writing about my first preference.

You could talk about your musical contribution, for one, in addition to some kind of commitment to the Marg's ethos (most likely revolving community and academics).
