Otago Halls of Residence

Hi everyone :)

I am trying to decide which college to put as my first choice. St Margarets has some appeal because it is quiet and close to lectures, but reading through this thread it seems people are ambivalent about the general atmosphere of the place. I haven't visited any of the Otago halls so I would appreciate any anecdotal information about St Margs. I guess I am trying to work out if the atmosphere is just somewhat serious (which I can deal with) or if it is more that the hall is generally unfriendly and that is what makes people uncomfortable.

I think the consensus is that every hall has its pros and cons. I think i remember someone here mentioned that they were at Unicoll (aka the party college) but still managed to find it an okay place to study in. I've heard similar experiences from my friends at Cumberland.

Up at Auckland, even people in the "quiet" halls manage to make friends that party hard. Some of my mates in BHSc say they can't imagine not going out every weekend (sometimes every night).

A good hall really is a small part of your university experience. Most of my studious hall buddies up at Auckland stay in the libraries and computer labs till 10-12 and only really go home to sleep, eat, shower and hang out. So regardless of which hall you end up, you'll be able to make a few friends AND get that quiet experience your after.

Personally, I reckon if you are going to choose a hall, do it based off objective reasons (like food quality, room size, location etc).

Oh and btw welcome to MSO!

+1, being around smart people won't make you smarter and there are plenty of people who want to actually try at every hall.

Agreed, @Sephiros . If you're going to choose a hall, it's more important how you adapt to your environment rather than the environment itself. skyglow1 was in Aquinas (considered a 'crap, lousy party hall') and aced his HSFY with a 98 average. Doesn't matter where you are at, only matters what you do with the opportunities presented.

I am just wondering, if the halls does not play a significant role in the university life then why will there be more popular halls and other halls that most consider as "inferior"

Because good halls are just nicer to live in, more modern etc.

There's more to "university life" than "get good grades" - even if we ignore the social side of things, halls will still differ greatly in the rooms, the food, the facilities etc.

First year's not just about work. Excellent new experiences to be had. Making friends, learning new things about yourself, getting OTP. First year is amazing. Please don't be one of those people who studies too much.

This is coming from a HSFY who studied lots, partied lots, did lots in first year and made it.

Hellooo!!!
So, need the typical need-advice-for-halls-preference-list etc....
And sorry if I am being repetitive..... But I really don't have the time to look through all 56 pages....mocks... Yay... Not
anyway.... The fact I am still not quite decided on my halls is nagging at me....

So I went to the open day but only got to look round a few halls.
I quite liked Arana overall, but I am worried it will be too outgoing for me...? Because Carrington seemed nice and more placid I guess, but I did like Arana the most.... Dont know if I will get in though.. Got level 1 + 2 endorsed with E, and took accelerate maths... Calc was a joke and mistake though.... But I am worried about sport, used to do hockey, but team was cancelled this year due to lack of players! :(
but Have been pretty involved hough; formal comittee, science prefect, spca volunteer etc.... Do you think the sport thing will be a big issue?? And about the whole Placid thing....

Also I read that studholme only accepts 1st choices, is this true? Because I was thinking as putting it as 2nd.

If it is, is Hayward a good option as 2nd?

And if hayward 2nd, is unicol as last a good Idea? Because I dont know what else to put... Because atleast it is right on campus....

Anyway... Sorry I have rambled soooo much!!!! And thanks!!! :)

I can understand that you may have some time demands but there are functions at the top of the tread to search key terms like "Arana" or "Carrington" within this thread so you can cut down the amount you need to read. Much of this thread is repetition really from people asking the same questions, with a few exceptions, so you won't need to read much to get the gist of it.

Anyways I think your achievements are pretty decent and will likely get you into the halls you want. In any case, regardless of where you end up, you're likely to have a great experience (especially if it's your first time away from home).

Awesome thank you Rey! I shall have to try that out, sounds very useful!!! Yes, hopefully shall be a great next year!!! :) apart from the copious amounts of study..... :)

Hi bobogoose!
Like Rey said, with your academic record, you should be fine getting into your first preference - but I know what you mean, it's still worrying even when people constantly console you that you'll be fine! :P

There's heaps of stuff on this thread already about every individual hall. I haven't heard that Studholme only accepts 1st choices. The only halls that I know that only accept 1st (and sometimes, but extremely rarely, 2nd) choices are Arana, Knox, Carrington and St. Margaret's.

I put Hayward as my third option, but I hear it's not a bad hall. I have a few friends who have been there and they loved it. Most people I hear are either placid regarding the hall, or loved their experience there. I stayed at unicol as a guest for two months a couple of years back - it's not actually as bad as everyone makes it out to be, but it might just have been the wing I was in, and the fact that I was a guest, so probably treated differently to the students there. It does have a 'party hall' reputation, and bear in mind the massive numbers. If you like lots of company, then you'll be in good hands there. It's on campus, so very close to everything in the university.

All the best :)

hey!

ah, ok, do the whole @ thing.....:)

Rey and musica209 thanks for the consolations!!!!!

Yeah I think Arana but a quiet floor maybe.... as first....

Here is where I read about Studholme being 1st choice only, but I just havent really heard much about Studholme though....
Applying to Studholme College, Studholme College, University of Otago, New Zealand (last sentence)

but then that is the only place I heard about the 1st choice for studholme though..... but yeah tossing up about 2nd place then...
but I do know several people putting hayward first though.... and rooms are big.. ( although that might make them harder to heat up...hmmm.) yeah well it is good that your friends liked it!!! good prospect...
I hate making decisions!!!! any way thanks for the advice!!! oh dear I am such a rambler!!! :)
