Otago Halls of Residence

hey!

ah, ok, do the whole @ thing.....:)

@Rey and @musica209 thanks for the consolations!!!!!

Yeah I think Arana but a quiet floor maybe.... as first....

Here is where I read about Studholme being 1st choice only, but I just havent really heard much about Studholme though....
Applying to Studholme College, Studholme College, University of Otago, New Zealand (last sentence)

but then that is the only place I heard about the 1st choice for studholme though..... but yeah tossing up about 2nd place then...
but I do know several people putting hayward first though.... and rooms are big.. ( although that might make them harder to heat up...hmmm.) yeah well it is good that your friends liked it!!! good prospect...
I hate making decisions!!!! any way thanks for the advice!!! oh dear I am such a rambler!!! :)

Yeah, Arana's pretty good, I have to admit. I was going to put that as my second option, but then I heard they toss away applications that put them as second, so I decided I'd put St. Marg's - for location purposes only. It's on campus (albeit Arana is literally 30 seconds uphill, but saves me that 30 seconds eh?), so decided to put St. M as my second option!

I don't think Studholme is first choice... I'm not so sure about this though, so don't take my word for it. They could just be saying that to boost their own reputation a little bit ;)

Hayward does have big rooms, so it is a massive plus. But then again, if you think about it, you're going to be doing HSFY next year, which requires a lot of hard work. What proportion of that will really be appreciating what a nice, spacious room you have? I think go for the hall that you feel most comfortable in (take a trip down to Dunedin and have a look!), and don't weigh it out according to how big the rooms are, or whether they have nice bathrooms or not :)

Big rooms really are a bonus!

I hear city college has a favorable room to bathroom ratio?

I had a few friends at CityCol as well. They said it was really noisy, barely any rules around the area, and rooms were tiny (if that's of importance). But if they have a good room:bathroom ratio, must be a plus cos less waiting time. It's a little bit more of a walk to Uni than the others though (excluding Salmond and Knox..), bobogoose.

Less smells too. My friends at the Huia Hall complain how the bathroom smells like vomit (even down the corridor) on a Friday and Saturday.

Cleaning staff do not work weekends :(

That's awful! I've never even heard of Huia Hall... Where is that? :/

Hey guys so I'm wondering should even bother applying for the first choice halls eg carrington, Knox etc. I only have passed ncea in both years? . Will my sporting achievements such as competing at worlds and nationals and winning regionals be enough to outweigh my academic record and get me a place. I don't really wanna waste a first choice if I have not much chance of getting in and going on the gwl.

Definitely. If you've competed at international and national level, and winning regionals, you have an extremely high chance of getting in. Academic records are not all they look for, and your sporting achievements will be a huge plus. You should definitely apply for the hall you want best as your first choice :) I think you stand a great chance! Which hall did you want to put as your first preference?

Does anyone else agree with me here?

[offtopic] What's gwl..? [/offtopic]

Edit: Also, I see you've posted twice about the same kind of stuff. Rey actually answered your question awhile back in this post, so you might want to read it:

I got off the general waiting list and into St Mags with a similar background (though I didn't really play sports).

I don't quite understand what a "waste" of a first choice is....I don't see you NOT getting into a non-first choice Hall regardless of which spot you put it in. I got into Aquianias which was my second choice during first round offers.

Thats why I find it so funny when people freak out over halls.... If I can get in with an average CV so can you.

Hello!

I am thinking of studying Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) and interested into getting into Dentistry if possible. Which do you think would be a suitable college for someone like me? Carrington, St Margarets or any other colleges, especially for dental students? Thank you!

Depends on the person! Are you trying to get into a "study hall" or something? Because if so, go for St. Marg's, they're known for being extremely hard-out. There's no cliché for dental students... it really depends how hard you work and your work ethic.

I was just wondering, but out of those more competitive hall (i.e. St. Mags, Carringtons, Selwyn etc.) is that are ranking between those colleges? Like it is harder to get into some of them than the others.

Good Q...
I suppose that changes from year to year but in any case the differences are likely to be insignificant because of the difficulty of getting into any of these colleges in the first place (as compared to other halls).

Of course, I'm just speculating on this...

Different halls look for different things... Apparently it's really difficult to get into Carrington and St. Margaret's, but I could be wrong. Depends on your competition the year you apply!

Anyone have any idea when the halls of residence open up in 2013?

It says the Saturday before O week... Can't seem to find when O week starts!

O week is normally the last week of February, so people generally move into the halls around Feb 20 or so. Feb 23 is a Saturday so probably then.

I emailed OUSA, and they said the plan is to have O week on Feb 18th 2013 - do you think I should bank on halls opening on 16th? (Need to get tickets from home back to Dunedin.) Course approval is 15th, 18th and 19th, and the Accommodation section in the Otago website says they generally open on the Saturday before O week.

It'll all be confirmed soon when hall placements are out

If its urgent I suggest contacting relevant halls that you are interested in.
