Otago Halls of Residence

I emailed OUSA, and they said the plan is to have O week on Feb 18th 2013 - do you think I should bank on halls opening on 16th? (Need to get tickets from home back to Dunedin.) Course approval is 15th, 18th and 19th, and the Accommodation section in the Otago website says they generally open on the Saturday before O week.
Sounds like the halls are probably opening on the 16th then. Given that it's important for you to get an accurate answer though why don't you just email the accommodation office (or any of the halls)?

Emailed the accommodation office, and they said nothing's specific yet, and the halls won't know for certain yet either! Thanks for all the help though. I'll be certain to keep annoying them, heh ^_^

I don't think we will receive anything until October since the closing date for accommodation application is 30 September.

[offtopic] My friend totally psyched me out by telling me it closed on the 9th Sept. I'm pretty sure she's still convinced it closes on 9th Sept.. [/offtopic]

[MENTION=15105]Zion[/MENTION] what were your choices?

@Zion what were your choices?

[offtopic] You could tell her that she was wrong. Or you could have a little fun by not telling her it. :lol: [/offtopic]

I put down Knox, Hayward, Studholme, in that order. What about you?

Carrington, St. Margs, Hayward! Wow, we're almost completely different :)

^ Chances are you two would end up in Carrington together.

@musica2009 I guess you didn't do much research before you chose your 3 preferences?

mine is carrington, unicol, cumberland

Interesting! Maybe I'll see you there!

Haha, I love how you immediately assume I didn't do much research... Am I inferior in your eyes because I don't have the same options as you? ;)

Yes you are. jk :lol: I assumed you didn't do much research when I looked at your preferences. People in here have been saying that you shouldn't put St Margaret's as second choice because they only take first-choicer, and Hayward would make a bad third choice as it's moving slowly towards first choice as well. I do hope you get into Carrington, such a good place to live.

I'm well aware of St. Marg's and Hayward, but thanks for the heads up anyway :P

I'd hazard a guess that the reason Zion questioned the amount of research you did is because you flagrantly ignored the advice of people who know what they're talking about, and chose the exact list you were told would be a bad idea. Be it on your own head...
Vaguely related:
Depends on the person! Are you trying to get into a "study hall" or something? Because if so, go for St. Marg's, they're known for being extremely hard-out. There's no cliché for dental students... it really depends how hard you work and your work ethic.
No cliché hall for dental students? You're basing this on....?
I think the liason officer from Otago came in and told us that the department informed everyone that they were increasing the places for Medicine... It was a week ago tomorrow.
Wrong, read the email I posted from the dean of the medical school about 2 posts above this.
I don't mean to be a douche, but seriously, you're not even HSFY yet, stop dishing out advice on stuff you have little/no idea about.
[offtopic]Yes, I broke my self-imposed MSO embargo for this wee rant [/offtopic]

That's fine, I don't mind Zion asking about my research. No one told me it would be a terrible idea; a lot of my friends (be it in highschool or university, or past university) said those sounded fine. I'm quite happy with the halls I've chosen... And a pat on the back for Zion too - my friends who've gone to Knox loved their experience there, and have no regrets whatsoever.

Dental students at Otago, but I guess from your tone, I shouldn't be contributing that...?

I saw that, but I just thought it would be okay to just throw that in. [MENTION=9988]Cathay[/MENTION] gave me a heads up on it being a bad idea, so I know not to do it anymore. Sorry you're so annoyed by my posts...? I'm taking the advice though, and I won't post anymore.

Thanks! :)

Lol oh God. Sorry, that's just how I deal with anyone who posts anything that annoys me. Just because it annoys me doesn't mean that you have to stop posting, I'm not *that* important :p
All I meant was that you should probably try to tone down the dishing out of unsubstantiated advice, I certainly don't want you to entirely stop posting.

So after wasting hours of my time reading through the 62 pages of info on the residential colleges on this forum, I still can't come to a decent conclusion about a couple of things.
1) Is Arana a good place to study? How rowdy would it be on a scale of 1-10 (1 being St. Margs, 10 being Unicol)? I put it down as first preference because of the distance to HSFY lectures.
2) Same questions about Cumberland. If it's not that great, what would be a better/closer to lectures option? Keeping in mind 3rd choice was Unicol.

I did read everything here, but most people have conflicting answers, so I'd really appreciate a final answer on this.

Maybe it's conflicting as its subjective.
