Otago Halls of Residence

Guys, did your parents go with you to the Hall (if you didn't live in Otago) in the first day of the first year? Where do the parents stay if they go to Otago with their kids in the first day of the year?

They could stay in a motel? I imagine quite a few parents go down with their kids to help them out.

Mine did (as did plenty of others, so don't worry, it doesn't cramp your style too badly haha), and they crashed at The Executive Residence (It was close to UniCol, where I stayed). There are also plenty of motels/B&B's floating around Dunedin they can stay in, or I guess they could crash on the floor of your Res. Col. room, but I don't know how happy you/they would be with that :p

Thanks guys. My dad insists that he has to go and stay with me for the first day for him doesn't believe I can handle things myself. Actually, do we have to stay in the Hall on the first day, my dad thinks we can stay at a motel so he can have some final dad to son conversations.

When my family stayed with my sister (the first time she came here), we were given the 'penthouse' in Unicol while she was there. I know St. Marg's doesn't have anywhere for family to stay cos it states it on their website.

Thank you for the reply! I was asking which hall had the most number of students that returned to do dentistry, as I hope to do dentistry if possible and would like to know more friends and coursemates.

On the other hand, do senior students (students in their 2nd year and above) return to the residential colleges or do most choose their own accommodation (e.g. flatting etc)?

Heheh I giggle when you say senior as being 2nd year and above :P It is generally only the independant halls which take returners. i.e st margarets, knox, selwyn, carrington, studholme, arana.

This is because the university owned halls (Unicol, hayward, cumberland and more i think?) are pressured to provide accomodation for first years, due to the sheer amount of first year students. I.e: those who go to unicol cannot return unless there are paticular reasons why you cannot flat.

But I am not sure about other halls i can only really vow for st margarets at like 4. But im sure carrington, arana, knox, selwyn and most halls are contribute their fair amount of dent students. You should also remember that i think around 1/6th of dentistry students are from 2nd year entrance and graduate pathways.

So offers start at next week and the $700ish place of confirmation payment is needed.
Does this payment reduce the 1st deposit of $6700 in February to $6000?? or is it used to cover admin fees etc

The number that enter via 2nd year and Post grad varies year to year. In 2011, 9 2nd years were accepted. For 2012 BDSII, there are only 2 (2nd year entrants), and both were from Auckland. There were another 3 post grads.

Where are you looking to stay?

Hello, is there a need to attach letters of references? It says on the website Applying for Accommodation at Otago, University of Otago, New Zealand

"If you are a prospective first year student applying for a residential college, we require the University of Otago confidential school reference or two character references if you are not a school leaver."

How to send letters of references?

Confidential referee forms are on the Otago website. Print that out, give it to the person you want to be your referee, and they'll know (or should know, from previous years...) how to do the rest. The instructions for them are on the website as well.

I thought your teacher will do it for you, apparently my career adviser told me that Otago University will sent reference form to your school and after every relevant teachers complete the form, the career adviser will conclude it and send it back to Otago.

As far as I know we don't have any international students on MSO from Otago other than methylisothiazolinone , so I don't know if anyone will be able to answer this. Your best bet would be to email the colleges you're applying to.

Hi there, we don't come across international students often on MSO, and the Otago website isn't very clear on the matter, so instead of just guessing, I'd advise you to contact the Accommodation Adviser directly with your question: [email protected]

Also since you're on med students online, I presume you belong to our typical user demographic: "about to start university, hoping to get into medicine", in which case I do feel the need to mention this:
Otago Website said:
Normally, no places are available for independent international students in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) programme, however a very limited number of places may be available in any year if a reduced number of sponsored students (under the terms of contracts with overseas governments) are enrolled.
We did come across a few international students (prospective or otherwise) who have only recently discovered this fact, and that's caused some grief over the matter, so I feel obliged to make sure you're aware of that before getting yourself into a big competitive mess like HSFY.

If it's Dentistry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy or Medical Laboratory Science you're after, I'd still encourage you to get in touch with the Admissions Office at [email protected]

Of course, if you're not after any of the 5 I've named above, feel free to ignore this second part.

Hi frontloop and Cathay, thanks a lot for being so helpful! Ok, I will contact the Accomodation Adviser directly. Thanks again!

I cant login!!!! Noooooo!!!!!! Both my friends got in to arana, I have been trying to login for the past 40 min!!!! Grrr fingers crossed!!! How is everyone else???

I just logged in...

I'm on the waitlist...

Apparently having Merit (with 40 Excellence) and winning 2 regionals in sport as well as playing for 4 1st teams is not good enough... :(
