Otago Halls of Residence

Ok, since it's college-time...
As lulwhut has already pointed out (despite not living in a hall himself :p ), the hall you go to WILL NOT influence your chances of acceptance into the course you want, and you will make friends anywhere. Congrats to those who did get the hall they want, but for those who didn't, try not to get too upset about it (certainly don't give up a place in one hall to go on the waiting list!). Heck, I went to UniCol last year, and I did alright.

KNOX! :(

Are the ball's compulsory, any current students... I think I can handle the weekly formal dinners... but the dancing on the other hand... and having to wear 'ball finery'...

DISCLAIMER: I'm sure Knox is a lovely hall, and I don't mean to demote it in any way by being upset, I'm just not one for dancing/dressing up

Hi guys, I'm another forum lurker! Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted into halls! I got into Arana (yay!!) but I'm now having second thoughts over whether this is the right hall or if maybe I should have gone for Carrington... I love my social life but I'm really not keen on having raging suit me? I know this is probably a silly question and it's too late now because I've already got into my first choice (don't get me wrong, I am sooooo happy about this!!) I guess I just need some reassurance from some people who know the different halls well. Thank-you in advance and once again, congrats to all who have been offered a place somewhere!

You're welcome.

Thanks frootloop. I need to get my head around the: "you will make friends anywhere". I had a terrible experience at a boarding school where I did not meet anyone that I had anything in common with and therefore made no solid friendships. I ended up lonely and extremely unhappy. I guess I am just scared of this happening next year. I need to trust that it won't!

Once again, thanks for your reply :)

Also I just read back over my post and realize parts of it don't make sense... apologies!

Got into Studholme even though it wasn't in any of my 3 choices. If I decline which I most probably will, is it possible to go on a waitlist for a specific hall or do I have to go on the general waitlist and risk getting into an even worse hall eg Toroa, etc :\ thanks for your help guys and congratz to those who got their choices!

You'd go on the general wait-list. Seriously, is Studholme *that* bad? It's like, really close to your lecture theatres, it's not UniCol-loud... What more do you need?

I grant you the honourary title of pre-hsfy counselor. :p
Seriously though I do enjoy how you in your own way try to comfort the future cohort of hsfy, we appreciate it. (yy)

Why thank you :p In reality I'm just procrastinating from exam-study, but if my procrastination is helpful to others then I guess that's a plus haha [/offtopic]

[OFFTOPIC]Well in that case don't let me stop you, since they say that you can't really fail second year med at Otago(I've heard things...)
You wouldn't happen to know anything about Aquinas would you? By the looks of it I'll be going there next year, with that damn hill.[/OFFTOPIC]

You most certainly can, but they do give you plenty of chances to prove your worth...

From the perspective of someone who goes in occasionally to do a bit of educating, seems like a great place with great people...

Erm, I know zilch about Aquinas other than it's miles away (but has a shuttle), and produced [MENTION=3119]skyglow1[/MENTION], sorry. [/offtopic]

Medicine has a 10% failure rate.

The downside is having to schedule everything around the shuttle timetable (unless you want to walk of course). Other than that, it's cool.

[OFFTOPIC]I meant that in comparison to the HSFY workload it'd be hard to fail if a similar amount of effort was to be applied.[/OFFTOPIC]

[OFFTOPIC]Wow, I sit here in awe... such a mighty creation, >95% average, he is a god[/OFFTOPIC]

Hmmm, in comparison to HSFY workload it's bloody hard. The only thing that isn't there is the stress of the competition.

EDIT: But on the 'effort' front, yeah that's fair.

Thanks for the recognition.
But let's not get offtopic guys, it's called the Halls of residence thread. This happens every time I post something, it goes viral, then it gets offtopic so fast you don't even realize where it stopped.

[OFFTOPIC]You know you liked it ;).. No homo
By the way, is the hill really as steep as it seems in the pictures? Also are there many hsfy people there or not a lot. Sorry if I'm bombarding you with questions atm, but this is the last thing I'll say/ask for tonight.[/OFFTOPIC]
