Otago Halls of Residence

I thought Knox is a first-choice only hall, how come Numbus2000 is able to get into the hall without putting Knox in her three option and got an offer? I am a bit confuse, or is there a different criteria for first and second year student o.O

What?! I put Knox as my first choice and they didn't accept me, life is fair

aww i'm sorry :( and I presume you mean 'life is UNFAIR'? Where did you end up getting in?

Nimbus you need to stop with the drugs and such. Balls are not compulsory... you just look a little antisocial if you don't go. Also, dancing, sheeit I danced once at the first ball and didn't go to the second. The proper formal dinner is once a week, with 4 nights of the week being blazer/shirt/tie/black shoes for boys, and a nice dress/skirt for girls. Informal dinner twice a week.

EDIT: And even so, if you don't want to dress nicely for dinner (I'm not going to say dress up, it's really just about not looking like student who doesn't give a shit about yourself) you can just ask for a late dinner, get it at 7 instead of 6, and wear give-up-on-life pants as much as you want (@lulwut that's what you call sweatpants right?)

I know I read the handbook, no tolerance for drugs it says >.> WHAT DO I DO???? Reading the handbook also made me wonder --- where on earth are you stashing your drugs? :P

haha thanks for that caesar :D!

DISCLAIMER: NO ONE SHALT TAKE ME SERIOUSLY.

Badass grades and knowing certain people. Except for that last bit.
i.e. Badass grades.

For students from school the focus is equally on grades and involvement in sporting and cultural stuff in your school. Also volunteer stuff etc. Pretty much anything that show's you're a cool person.

LOL badass grades? I only wish. I think it may have had something to do with application - I've done quite a bit of volunteer work, though I haven't really done anything this year, so I'm actually sort of surprised that it had any sort of weighting!

MAN, this is making me feel like some mean person! I am truly sorry @Hueyen22 that you didn't get in to your first choice hall :( I didn't either - in fact, this offer was one that I initially didn't want, now that I know a bit more about knox, I'm more happy about it!

Good luck :/ I hope you get into knox through 2nd round offers or something :) But in any case, try to go to any hall with an open mind - a lot of people seem to claim that particular halls are 'crap' and others are 'good/great'. This is absolute falsity! Most people I've heard of, love the hall that they go to, even if it wasn't their first choice!

Sorry :/

@ Nimbus2000r , lol sorry for making a fuss about it :P, I got into Salmond, my second choice. Yeah i guess i don't really have much community involvement and co-curricular, maybe that is why I didn't got into Knox, I should learn to accept my fate ._. Anyway, do anyone know when will we receive the email  because i still havn't get mine.

I've got the email on Friday so I guess you will get it soon.

I haven't got an e-mail either, but if I don't get it by Monday midday, then I'll call up or e-mail the accommodation office.

lol it's fine, you don't need to apologise!

I've gotten the email, but my accommodation portal doesn't say i've been offered a place yet! I suppose it just takes a couple of days for them to get the electronics and letters on par :/ As ashimashi said, maybe email/call them up on monday :)

just wondering, is it possible to phone accomodation and asked to be put on a waiting list for a specific hall such as Arana? or do I just have to take any random offer?

Pretty sure it's not possible. You're welcome to call them and talk it through though - it might be good to hear them try to talk you into accepting whatever offer you've got at the moment, rather than just us doing that.

[box=Likely reply]"I know Studholme isn't the one you wanted, but many people don't get into their first choice, and they are neither prevented from having a good time nor prevented from getting into med/dent etc. If you choose to turn down Studholme and go onto the General Waiting List there's no guarantee that you'll get an offer later, and if you do it's highly unlikely to be from the popular halls you're after. You also leave yourself vulnerable to not getting an offer at all, in which case you'll end up coming down to Dunedin in mid-February only to find that you haven't got a place to stay - then you'll have to go flatting, which, in general, tends to be a bit less comfortable and convenient than staying at a college. I'd advise you to accept the offer from Studholme, it'll save yourself a lot of trouble."[/box]

Hey guys :)
Got an offer for Unicol but not entirely sure whether I'll definitely be studying HSFY at Otago next year and the payment for confirmation of a place is due soon. What happens if I reject the offer? Will I be placed on the unicol waitlist (as a pending student) or on the general waitlist?
Cheers :D

As far as I'm aware, there is no college-specific waiting list. If I recall correctly the form they sent you will have "accept", "decline and go on general waiting list", and "decline and don't go on general waiting list".

Yes that's correct :) So if send the 'decline and go on general waiting list' form and for example have fully decided to attend Otago in a few months time, will I be given my place at unicol again? thanks for your time! ^^

Nope, there's no option to hold the offer, so by declining you are, well, declining a place at Unicol, i.e. you're turning it down and will not have a place at unicol.

Oh ok I get it :) So being in the general waitlist will mean that whenever a residential college/s have a free spot (probably not in my three preferences), they'll offer it to me? Will it be just one college or more than one (so I can make a choice) or they'll only give me one choice?

One hostel will offer you a place. If you decline it, your application will go to another hostel, who will then potentially offer you a place (no guarantees that another would offer a place, be wary of this).

So you pretty much only get one choice at a time. Be wary - declining a hostel is a bit of a gamble; you can never be sure if another hostel will offer you a place.

When you're on the GWL it makes no difference who you have on the preference list, as soon as a college has spots, it will look at the first person on the GWL, decide if they're any good, and either offer or not offer. During this time the person's file is locked to that college so you can only be considered for one college at a time, and it's not until you decline the offer that your file is unlocked, so there will only ever be one offer at a time.

(I'm pretty sure you never get multiple offers, there's no 'choice' involved - it's not the accommodation office giving you a choice, they're not that coordinated - instead you're dealing with one college at a time.)

Um, I'm applying for study link right now. They want a mailing address -- what address am I supposed to put if I'm going to Carrington?
Is there a specific mailing address for students?

Carrington's address is 57 Heriot Row North Dunedin 9016
You just get your mail sent to this address and they leave your mail in a cubby hole in reception, which you can pick up.
