The stereotype of St Margs is 'quiet, clever, studious', and I'm given to understand that on the whole the Smag cohort fits the stereotype reasonably well compared to the other colleges.

No, it's not by any means an easy place to get into, it's a very popular college, and countless people miss out every year.

EDIT: By the way, I imagine people will be jealous of your "casually get into smag, don't even know a thing about it" :P

Um, I'm applying for study link right now. They want a mailing address -- what address am I supposed to put if I'm going to Carrington?
Is there a specific mailing address for students?

Hi, may I know what in particular they are asking you for? Like does it say something along the lines of 'intended address whilst studying' or does it just say 'address/correspondence address'? Because as far as I know, if it doesn't say something like where you are planning to stay, then you should probably put in your current address - because they send you a contract that you have to fill in, sign and etc. So I think it may be best if you put in your current address for now, and then change it once it gets closer to you moving into Carrington. Maybe the system has changed this year, and you can get your contract online, but that's how I did it last year, so just letting you know :)

I err'd on the side of "she probably knows what she's doing", but I had that exact same concern - you definitely don't want the contract sent to Carrington right now, when you're months away from being there.

There are two questions - one is where you live now, and one is where you will live when studying, and if I recall correctly there will be fields to put dates into so you can tell them when you'll be where, which is nice and convenient. Either way you'll create an iGovt login later, so you can go into your myStudyLink (now logged in using iGovt) and change your address there later if need be.

Online contracts have always been available, but I didn't have them either for the first year, I recall they might need you to sign a physical thing to authorize them to take online stuff in place of your signature anyway? (It may have been why I just got them to send me the paper contract the first time, but I've done it by online contract for two years now - yes, I've applied for student loan for next year already.)

Does anyone have an idea of he percentage of people pulling out of offers?. Just wondering whether I should decline this offer.

No one will know, they don't release the figures. You could ring and ask, but that's a long shot. If you genuinely don't want the hall you're at then it might be a good idea to decline and see where else you'll go. Worst case scenario you get a flat or studio apartment on your own (it's not as daunting as it sounds :P).

Ok, I'm a little sick of this:
Health-sci paranoia I can understand. Hall of residence paranoia, I can not. It really, really does not matter which hall you go to. Sure, if you want to put down a specific one on top your preference list, then that's perfectly reasonable. What is not reasonable, however, is b*tching and whining after you don't get the hall you wanted, and rejecting an offer from a perfectly good hall.
You have no 'rights' to the college of your choice, you should really count yourself lucky if you get into a college at all, otherwise you'd have to flat (and do all the cooking/cleaning/flat drama that goes with it). All a hall is really for is to feed you, give you a place to sleep, and throw you in front of some other freshers to make buddies with. All three of these things occur to perfectly satisfactory levels at any hall.
This is largely just a case of 'Spoiltbratomegaly' (Hypertrophy of an area of the brain known as the 'Brat's area', which is often enlarged in high-achieving self-entitled high-school children who think that they should be given everything they ever desired because they're the specialz).

I wouldn't turn down Cumby. It's close to New World. Convenient.

Oh wow  Cumberland is a good Hall, I thought of putting it into my 3 choices but it's pretty scary with ghosts and everything. Just google Cumberland ghost and you'll see ^_^

[OFFTOPIC]Stop scaring people... 2 Health sci students can imagine a lot of things (given the paranoia and stress associated with HSFY, I don't think imagining things like ghosts is a big deal.);) [/OFFTOPIC]

The ghost was old news by the time the media got to it, and even then only two people saw it..

Cumby isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Although it does cater towards the PE/commerce crew a lot, you are put on a health sci floor which is really helpful. The tutes ran here aren't normally what the health sci's want, again catering for the group of people who are happy with a C+, but the tutors can answer more complicated questions if you go before the tute or just after it. Drinking nights are loud, but the library is close and the tute rooms are normally really quiet.

And really, if you're going to make it into med, you're going to make it into med. Don't worry about where you live. We have some amazing students here, our floor goes out most weekends and still maintains a very high average between the health sci's.

Edit: Not aiming this at you Zion! Haha sorry, sorta went off on a tangent.

Yeah true, what I like about Cumberland is that they have a health science floor, which feels like a mini Carrington  But you can't deny Cumby is very rowdy.

No denial there! They've set it up well though. Third and fourth floor are smaller than the rest of the college and are primarily health sci's, so it does feel sort of separate from the rest of the college and you don't get as much noise from the lower floors.
