Otago Halls of Residence

By the way, is the hill really as steep as it seems in the pictures? Also are there many hsfy people there or not a lot. Sorry if I'm bombarding you with questions atm, but this is the last thing I'll say/ask for tonight.
I'm given to understand that at the start of the year there were 60 health scis there.

The hill... not that steep in general, although I don't really get a good sense of it since I'm always in a vehicle of some sort and never walked up it.

The hill's not that bad. I hardly ever walked up it though. Just take the shuttle lol. It's no problem and it's so convenient.

You'd go on the general wait-list. Seriously, is Studholme *that* bad? It's like, really close to your lecture theatres, it's not UniCol-loud... What more do you need?

yeah i guess it's not all that bad haha but I guess I would like one more shot at a really decent hall such as Arana, Carrington etc. If I were to go on the waiting list, what are my chances of getting into one of the big halls like Selwyn, arana, carrington etc? thanks for your time! :D

Also because I didn't get into either of my 3 choices, does that mean my application has been sent to all 3 halls and they all rejected me or has it only been sent to my first preference and this was only the first round of offers and my application has yet to be sent to my 2nd preference? cheers!

Very, very small. I'm not sure if it's impossible (it may have happened in the past?), but it's definitely not something you'd remotely ask for - it's like buying something like Big Wednesday and expecting the grand prize, it's not impossible, but you sure as hell wouldn't count on it actually happening, and you most certainly have no right to get upset because you didn't win Big Wednesday.

By the definition of 'preference', they would've offered you one of them if they could.

Getting something outside any of your 3 means that: 1) your application has been seen by all three, AND EITHER 2) by the time it got there said hall had already filled up from higher preference (the popular ones all fill up with first-choicers, so if your application was in their second choice box then you're gone), OR 3) said hall rejected you.

Out of interest, what were your three preferences?

alrighty. Thanks alot for your time! appreciate it! my preferences were 1.Arana 2.Hayward 3.Unicol

So I'm not the only one that got rejected by Unicol in 3rd preference... good to know

haha. It's weird because my friend who's already at uni said that if you put unicol 3rd, they'll give it to you since their that desperate. I guess their standards must have raised...:D

Also does anyone know if you can recieve more than one offer at a time? I've been offered a place at Studholme but can I recieve any more offers from other colleges?

Nope. Since you've been offered a place at Studholme your application is locked to them, it cannot be considered by any of the other colleges.

EDIT: That is until you turn down their offer and opt to go on the General Waiting List, at which point your application will be unlocked and placed on the GWL open for colleges with places to consider.

So if I get an offer while I'm on the gwl and turn it down. What are the chances of not getting another offer. Has anyone experienced this or know someone who has?

KNOX! :(

Are the ball's compulsory, any current students... I think I can handle the weekly formal dinners... but the dancing on the other hand... and having to wear 'ball finery'...

DISCLAIMER: I'm sure Knox is a lovely hall, and I don't mean to demote it in any way by being upset, I'm just not one for dancing/dressing up

AND I just remembered, Caesar is at knox right? So i'll just repost this in case he doesn't read this thread...

The accommodation office always warns people about that, sounds like a worst case scenario but it must cause them enough trouble (either in quality or in quantity) that they'd rather people didn't decline their offers.

Then why did you apply for it ? Did you put it as your first choice?

I didn't apply for it - I'm a 2nd year applicant, and I think I stupidly put the university owned colleges as my top 3 choices... knox was the only one I didn't want to get into, I would literally accept anywhere else... I seriously wouldn't mind going to knox, as long as the bi-yearly ball and stuff isn't compulsory...

I don't know anything about this as I'm a first year applicant  but I don't think the ball would be that bad.

You're worried about a ball? Heck, it's these sorts of things that makes me want to go to Knox, and I'm by no stretch of the imagination a highly social critter.

Nimbus you need to stop with the drugs and such. Balls are not compulsory... you just look a little antisocial if you don't go. Also, dancing, sheeit I danced once at the first ball and didn't go to the second. The proper formal dinner is once a week, with 4 nights of the week being blazer/shirt/tie/black shoes for boys, and a nice dress/skirt for girls. Informal dinner twice a week.

EDIT: And even so, if you don't want to dress nicely for dinner (I'm not going to say dress up, it's really just about not looking like student who doesn't give a shit about yourself) you can just ask for a late dinner, get it at 7 instead of 6, and wear give-up-on-life pants as much as you want (lulwut that's what you call sweatpants right?)
