Otago Halls of Residence

I don't know... I heard Aquinas wasn't a good one. I heard there were lot of international students there and it's really far from the Uni. And it seems to be the last pick for everyone, so I'd be disappointed if I was put into Aquinas.

I tried calling them just before and it goes to their answering machine, so I don't think I can get a hold of one of their accommodation staff members to talk to by tomorrow. Which by that time I'll be 3 days late

When do they announce who gets in which halls of residence? I hope there'll be a spot for me in the second round offers in St Margaret's for me.
It isn't a 'bad hall' per se, in fact most of the people there seem to love it (skyglow1 will attest to that), but I'll admit the distance would be inconvenient at times.
Sorry but I really have no idea re: whether you'll be eligible for a first-round offer (although to be honest I'd say you'll be fine). Um, I *think* hall offers came out mid-December last year?

Would have been more like mid-October, surely?

When I applied for the halls (this is 3 years ago mind you) offers came out in mid-October, and the accommodation website gave an exact date that offers would be mailed out.

Lol yeah probably, now that I think about it it was definitely earlier than I remembered.
Oh, and the admissions website:
Applications received after these dates will still be considered as places become available.

I don't think places will become available in the Halls of Residences that everyone wants to get into. Everyone seems to have chosen St Margaret's or Carrington as their first choice, so I doubt I can get it if I miss the first-round offer

I want to call them up but it keeps going to their answering machine. I guess I have to wait until tomorrow, but tomorrow seems so far away.

Lol what do you have against international students? And there's a shuttle that runs twice hourly between St David and the hall, so I actually probably did less walking than people at other halls!

Go for the hall you want, but please don't get upset if you don't get your first choice. In a years time you will look back and think "what was all the fuss about?"

Just because Aquinas was the last pick for people that you know (which honestly cannot be a true representation of everyone's choice of hostels) doesn't make it a 'bad' hostel - tbh I'd prefer it over Carrington or St. Margs, from what I've heard of both. Also, I'm pretty sure it's the student who makes the grades, rather than the hostel.

I don't mean to sound negative but +1 to Skyglow's post; "In a years time you will look back and think "what was all the fuss about?"".

[offtopic]There will also be many internationals in your lecture/lab streams. :p[/offtopic]

Did you hear back from them?

You could have also sent them an email(?) :) I hope they received your application.

Some friends heard back from Auckland hostels.. making me even more nervous. D:

Hi!! :) I just joined hahah and I'm sure you guys get a giant bunch for future HSFYears every single year but I promise not to ask repeated questions.

Anyway, I've been reading over this thread (sorry, I sound like a lurker hahah) and you guys said that it's pretty much pointless to put Carrington or Salmond as anything but your first choices.....what would happen if I put Knox, Salmond and Carrington (in decreasing order of preference)? + I'm actually regretting putting Carrington as my 3rd choice now. :(

Would Carrington and Salmond, both, reject me if Knox also doesn't accept me?

I'm just a tad bit worried! (but I got my application in way before the due date).

Thanks!

They didn't accept my late application for the first round offers.
They say I'll be placed into the general wait list and my application will be sent to all the Halls of Residence and it's up to them to decide who will offer me a place in their Hall of Residence.
So now, it's completely up to chance of which one will offer me a place.

Crucible... you probably will get into Knox. If not, Carrington will most likely decline you but I think you still have a good shot of getting into Salmon if Knox declines you.
If all 3 decline you, you'll be placed into the general wait list like me.

I don't think that many people miss out on a hall, and since it isn't the end of the world which hall you get into, I'd suggest that all involved take a deep breath :) As has been said above, next year you'll be going 'why was I so worried about this?', and you lot will be here next year telling the HSFY cohort of 2013 the same thing. Trust me, you'll all be fine :)

Since I'm going to be placed into the general wait list, how likely would it be that I got into ANY Hall of Residence?

Are there usually any spare rooms in any of the residential colleges or are they usually all filled up?

Sometimes i wish MSO has a like button.

I really hope so! I love the fact that they have a Poet's society (which the other Halls of residence didn't mention they had).
Ahaha thanks for the truth that Carrington will decline me - I'd much rather someone tell me the facts than say "Oh you'll be fine" like everyone at school.
Oh god. I really don't want to get the onto GWL (I don't want to be homeless or flatting alone in Otago if I get in)

By the way, how do you know you're on the GWL already? My application told me to check back aftert 5PM Oct 12th.

:P Ignore the fact that I'm posting during school time. I have a flu D: and my English internal is due tomorrow

There are generally spare rooms.

There are generally spare rooms.

Thanks.

To me the General wait list process is really complicated, and I'm annoyed at myself for not handing my application in on time.
I'm now just really worried that I won't get into ANY Halls of Residence - which in that situation I would have no idea where I would live when I go to Otago University.

Everyone gets their Halls of Residence offers at 11th of October after 5pm (I think).
I phoned them up to see if my application would be sent to the Halls of Residence that I chose. They said no because I sent mine in too late and I was to be placed on the general wait list.

Thanks.

You will be fine, just please be patient. And if worse comes to worst flatting will probably do you some good!

Do you know when they announce the offers for the people in the General Wait list? Do they announce it next year or this year?

Don't know about the general wait list offers. I was on the general wait list and some point too because of a late application. If you are really concerned, it can be helpful to directly ring a number of colleges to explain your situation and ask if they have any rooms available.

Yea, for me to do that I'll have to wait until all the first-round offers are made and wait for the people to respond to their first round offers before I can ask them for any spare rooms.
I've emailed the Residential college that I wanted to be in (St Margaret's) but they keep saying they haven't received my application yet and so they cannot determine if I can get a spot there or not.

This waiting is getting me worried - I don't want to wait until next year for them to tell me that I can't get into any of the residential colleges... but if there are generally spare rooms, that makes me fell more at ease. Or maybe not since the Otago University Student population is ever increasing.
